amg Welcome to the second part of our re-read of The Witch's Daughter! On this thread, you can discuss the book up to Chapter 4. Please be considerate and don't jump ahead -- we don't want to spoil anything for the first-time readers among us!

To kick off the discussion, here are five questions for you to answer in the comments section below. Anyone who answers these questions will be eligible to win an early copy of The Return of the Witch! Winner will be chosen on Monday, 2/8. Good luck!

Discussion Questions:
1. How do you think you'd adjust to life in the 1600s?
2. What do you think of Bess's family and how she spends her days?
3. What is your first impression of Gideon in these chapters?
4. Do you think William has feelings for Bess?
5. Do you think Bess did right by her siblings when they fell ill? Could she have done more or less? Should she feel guilty?

Deborah (deborahkehoe) 1. Living in the 1600's sounds like it would be incredibly hard. Especially for the class her family was a part of. Tons of manual labor with very archaic tools does not sound like fun!
2. I thought her family loved each other very much and didn't mind how hard their life was.
3. He was introduced as an unsavory character and I thought the author did a good job of layering the storyline so that he got progressively more bad.
4. I thought it was very obvious that he had feelings for her or at least wanted to explore a relationship.
5. Catching an illness is not something that Bess could have protected her siblings from. At that period of time they didn't know how it was spread so, no I don't think she should've felt guilty at all.

Magiccats 1. Yes, life back then would have been immeasurably difficult. I certainly wouldn't want to live at that time in history. No electric appliances to make life easier, everything done manually, I shudder to imagine.
2. Bess' s family seems to be really close and loving. I wouldn't imagine Bess had very much time to just relax but she goes about her days uncomplaining about her lot in life. It did state she loved the haying, so I imagine it was a nice change for her to be working outdoors instead of the usual household drudgery.
3. Gideon comes across as a very unsavory character and I still think he is an evil wizard, but I guess further reading will tell if I am right. He is obviously attracted to Bess, but he makes my skin crawl.
4. William seems to be good friends with Bess and he definitely seemed to care for her (her family all thought he was in love with her), but the class difference may be a problem eventually as it stated his father owned Batchcombe Hall so they were a family of some means. I don't imagine his parents would approve.
4.There was really nothing that Bess could have done for her siblings when they were stricken with the plague. If anyone would have felt guilty it would have likely been her mother for not using Magic earlier to save the others.
