Every year, the sixteen year olds of the society are administered a test. The test, formally known as an Aptitude Test, is a simulation. When the taker of the test enters the room, the administrator gives them a liquid to drink. This liquid is a stimulation drink that allows the taker to be put in numerous situations to decide their faction. The liquid contains several transmitters that allow the administrator to see what is going on inside their head. After the sixteen year old finishes their test, the administrator tells them what faction they got. There should only be one faction, although, there are some rare cases where there are multiple.
The next day, the sixteen year olds make a choice that will decide the rest of their lives. They are taken to a ceremony known as the Choosing Ceremony. They area given front row seats with the other sixteen year olds from their faction. The ceremony starts with a brief speech from the leader of the ceremony. This is usually the leader of the faction where the ceremony is being held. After this is done, the leader will then read off a list of names is something like alphabetical order. He/She will read them off according to the last names. They are read off Z-A. Once they are called up, they are given a knife. The sixteen year old then cuts himself/herself on the palm if his/her hand. Five bowls are placed in front of them. They are each filled with a different item. This item represents one of the five factions. Grey stones for Abnegation, soil for Amity, glass for Candor, lit coals for Dauntless, and clear water for Erudite. The sixteen year old allows their blood to drip into one of the five bowls. Whichever bowl they choose, is the faction they will stay in for the rest of their life. After they choose, the sixteen year old (now known as an initiate) goes to sit with either their old faction, or their new faction. 95% of the time, they choose to stay with their faction of origin.
