Amy | 11 comments So here's just a few of the beginning things I don't understand. Why are all these book reviews from a thousand years ago being posted? After the changeover is complete, will that quiet down, and we will only have our new posts? While I enjoy blasts from the past, I would sort of like things to get more current. Also, why are they posting what page people are on in their reading? Does this have to do with a kindle situation? I have to say I find that feature annoying. I don't mind hearing what people are reading. I care not about their page progress. I still have no idea how to click on and find people - at all. Last question. Once I get the csv file, and find my 36 missing reviews, somewhere in my email it tells me which 36, how on earth do I post them on Goodreads? Shelfari seems to be slowing down, I am sort of getting adjusted. But I don't know how I feel about the daily emails with posts. Its the reason I'm not on FaceBook, love you guys thought I do… I'm checking out for a week, going off grid, but when I come back I will have six new current reviews… Happy Reading to all...

Amy I think if you choose bulk as an option for notifications, you will receive fewer alerts about GR activities.

Where are you seeing all of these things - in your feed, in emails, in notifications?

All of these things can be customized.

Amy ...
LOTS of old reviews are definitely a function of the updates. I know as I'm going through and verifying data, I'm adding information. I try to remember to UNCLICK the "add to my update feed" box, but sometimes I forget.

Also... try going into your profile and adjusting your notifications settings. I don't want to know what people are currently reading, I just want their reviews. And I have MOST of my groups set to NO notifications (except for the three I am moderator of).

You can always add those notifications back in later, say in May, once most of the kerfuffle is over.

Hope that helps.

Amy | 11 comments Ok this is great, friends! Where do I customize and notifications? Be specific, highly intelligent and creative avid reader with great emotional intelligence and social ability. But as for technology, I suck! Like an F. Like a sub second grader... Any help would be fabulous... Thanks so much friends...

I'll give it a shot!

At the top of the page, on the right, you'll find an arrow next to your avatar. Click that and you'll see a drop-down menu. Select "edit profile." The page will display a number of tab selections. Choose "email" and you'll see a plethora of options, most self explanatory.

If you've questions about any, post them here.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 160 comments I joined Book Challenge 2016 and cannot figure out how to use it. Amazing how GR makes me feel like such an idiot. So I have made myself a list of read books in a place that is most like likely inappropriate, but at least I can keep up with how many books I have this year so far. I have a place in LM, but it is not user friendly. I give it credit for at least allowing me to do it wrong. I cannot even figure out how to get started in GR Book Challenge 2016 for the simple desire to list my books as read year by year. So my list is now under Shelfarians, to the right: Group Home, under that: bookshelf. I hope I can remember where I put them.

The GR challenge should update automatically as soon as you mark a book as read and put in the date you read it.
I went to your challenge and it says that you've read 13 out of 80 books. Is that right?

You can also see the books you read year by year if you go to "my books" scroll down until you see "stats" on the left hand side. Click on that and then on details to see all the books you've read in a specific year.

By the way, anyone in the group can add books the the group bookshelf so at some point, you may see books other than yours in that section if someone decides to add their own.

Which I hope means that my putting books there is not inappropriate and I just need to go to my specific bookshelf in that area to add to it. Good to know.

message 17: by Jonetta (last edited Feb 16, 2016 12:16PM) (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments Dosha, here's your profile page and if you scroll down on the right, you'll see the status of your 2016 challenge. As Lauren stated above, you only need mark a book as read with a completed date in 2016 for it to automatically update. If you click on "view books," you'll see all the books you've read in 2016.

Thank you for this, it did help somewhat. However when I went to my profile page, I don't see a place called "view books" to click on.

message 19: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments Sorry about that. When you're looking at your own profile, it says "view challenge" next to the 2016 Reading Challenge icon. Remember to scroll down and you'll see all of this on the right. It's an orange icon.

Oh. Wow!!!! I think I love you. So, I don't even need to join a group in order to see books read for the current year. Lovely.

You have been a huge help. Now I see that I have a book posted twice and I don't yet know how to get rid of one copy. I'll have to wait till I have the office to myself and continue trying to figure it out.

message 21: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments Dosha, your profile page is your friend. You can always access it by clicking on your avatar at the top of the page on the right.

Also, always at the top of the page is "My Books." If you click that, you'll go directly to your bookshelf.

Try it and come back and let us know you found it. You do NOT need to be in a group to access your stuff.

message 22: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments Dosha, if you've located "My Books" and selected it, on the left side will be your list of shelves (similar to Shelfari tags). If you go to the end of the list on the left, you'll see "tools" and underneath that, "find duplicates." Select that and you can handle eliminating one of them.

Well......it appears I have 100 @#$%^& duplicates. @#$%^!! Seriously? Naturally, I don't see the @W#$% one I'm looking for (even though the books are listed alphabetically). I'll find it (I hope) and not worry about the rest just yet. I need to concentrate on making sure my totals for this year are accurate. I don't seem to be making short work of it so far, that's for sure.

going to an existing book of my 100, I can see how to delete a review but not the whole book.

message 24: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments There's a search field at the top of your books that you can use to find the book you're looking for.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 160 comments Jonetta wrote: "There's a search field at the top of your books that you can use to find the book you're looking for."

Thanks. It would be so simple, once I see two copies of the book, side by side, if I could simply click on one of them and have a DELETE button option. You know what I'm saying?

message 26: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments You can do that using the find duplicates tool.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 160 comments Jonetta wrote: "You can do that using the find duplicates tool."

No I don't seem to be able to do that because the only time I see said duplicate book is on my profile page as a "read" book for the year 2016, where you so eloquently directed me to "view challenge" near the orange icon bottom right. There are two of them (Destiny's Captive) in that area only. When I go to duplicate books under the duplicate tool, Destiny's Captive does not appear at all. The books are alphabetical. Captive is the 3rd in the Destiny series. Destiny's Embrace is the only book that shows up as a duplicate. I'm scared to even look for #2 in the series (Destiny's Surrender).

I surrender. LOL

message 28: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments Are you sure the books are sorted in alpha order? Also, make certain you are moving to the next page in the display.

I went to your bookshelf and searched Destiny's Captive and you have three editions on your shelf. If you use the search feature, all three will appear. Determine the two you wish to delete and select the "X" next to that book, which appears on the far right...last character. It will delete the book.

I don't know how you know all of this. After staring at, and playing with the three books (and I thought there were only two), I had to figure that the only way to delete the extra books was to leave Cover view and go to Table view. Whew. OK, now on to see how many books GR thinks I've read this year. JESUS!

message 30: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments Bravo, Dosha! I thought the default was table view. Should have inserted that instruction.

message 31: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments Dosha, I take so much for granted.

If you want to view what's in your "read" shelf, select that bookshelf (the " tag" on your left side) and it will display all of your books that are read. Click on the date read column (to your right of the table) to have them sorted in date read order. Select it again to reverse the order (most recent/oldest & vice versa).

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 160 comments Jonetta wrote: "Bravo, Dosha! I thought the default was table view. Should have inserted that instruction."

I'm surprised you are still speaking to me. I know I've been a royal pain in the "you know what" but I just didn't get it@! I admire your patience.

I'm sure I had everyone's head spinning with the multitude of posts. My apologies to the GR world.

message 33: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments Lose patience with you? Never. I appreciate your willingness to learn. This is a big change.

I highly recommend you experiment with things from your profile page. It's where you control things.

Okay, good to know that I should go to my profile page. I haven't been on that since I set up the page. This really is a big change, that is so true.

You must have been a member here for a long time.

message 35: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments Since 2011. I experimented, learned things from other members in the groups I joined. After awhile, this place becomes less of a mystery.

message 36: by Lauren (new)

message 38: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments In the interest of full disclosure, Lauren's taught me SO much!! And, she's really good and outlining the instructions in the simplest of ways.

Aww! Thanks Jonetta. I've learned tons from you as well :0)

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 160 comments Well, now that I am familiar with the duplicate books process, why does it still say I have 100 duplicates even though I have been deleting the duplicates for a few days now?

message 42: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments Are you seeing a display of the duplicate books?

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 160 comments Nope. When I go to duplicate books, under tools, like you showed me in the first place, the top still says I have 100 duplicate books. I think I realize what has happened. When I first joined GR some years ago; when Shelfari first began to act up, I uploaded 100 books. Then last month with the demise of Shelfari and the subsequent upload of my entire library, those original 100 books that already existed here in GR came over once again.

message 44: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments When you select the "find duplicates" tool, are any books displayed?

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 160 comments oh yes, there certainly are. What I have begun to notice is the duplicates are the most current and the originals are from Dec. 19, 2014. That must be when I first joined GR. It was just too hard to use, since I had a choice, I was active only with Shelfari.

message 46: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments Then you can begin deleting the duplicates.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 160 comments Jonetta wrote: "Then you can begin deleting the duplicates."

Well, I thought I was deleting them. I would go to my books, choose table not cover, type in the name of the book. Get rid of one by clicking on the x at the far right. I've been doing this for a few days now One Book At A Time. And yet, every time I return to "duplicates" in tools, it continues to say 100 books.

message 48: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Dosha (Bluestocking7) wrote: "And yet, every time I return to "duplicates" in tools, it continues to say 100 books. ."

Are the books themselves being deleted or not? Check one and make sure the duplicate is really gone by sorting your shelves according to title.

It is possible that it still says 100 because of a cache issue. GR takes a while for things like that to update.

message 49: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments You don't need to leave the display after you've selected "find duplicates."

Just select "View all my editions," select "delete my review" for the one you want to remove. Then go back and work the rest (select duplicates at the top right).

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 160 comments Oh! Well now. I've been doing it wrong.
