Samurai with dirigibles. Adventure and romance. History and fantasy.
My new book, "Toru: Wayfarer Returns," is set in the bakumatsu period, in 1852, just before Perry arrives. It's an alternate history kicking off a series that will stretch through the tumultuous period leading up to the Meiji Restoration that explores the "what if" question of how the world might have turned out if the Japanese had been able to fight off Perry instead of opening under duress.
I lived and worked in Japan for several years, loved the culture and studied the language and culture formally in college, so I tried to be as true as I knew how to the culture and history, except of course for the history I changed.
I would be happy to send a free digital review copy (PDF/mobi/ePUB) to anyone in this group who would be interested in writing an honest review including the usual disclaimer "I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review." Private message me to make arrangements if you would like a free review copy.
Ratings advisory: There is no sex and some action (sword fights, bombs), but no gore or graphic violence. The tone is upbeat and optimistic, rather than trendier dystopian fare, so if you are looking for edgy dark material, this is not your book.
Who might enjoy it: those interested in fiction set in Japan, those interested in that period in Japanese history, steampunk fans who want something fresh after lots of steampunk novels set in Victorian London or the Weird Wild West, alternate history fans, young adult fans who like the Japanese settings.
