How realistic are the 'analog computers'? Or are they powered by handwavium?

I know they do, but I can't imagine trying to run a space faring vessel with only analog computers. And I can't see how that would be anything but a hindrance when facing nanotech.

I'm not trying to be down on the book, I'm just trying to separate science fiction from science fantasy.
