Briar looked around, surprised. "Wow. I didn't notice this in the orientation." Then she spotted her horse. "Lasair!" Briar exclaimed happily, rushing to the mare's side.

"We need to go riding," Briar said. "Right now."

"Well, come on!" Briar replied, getting gracefully onto Lasair's back. The white horse cantered out of the stables with a happy neigh and broke into a fast gallop in the field adjoining the stables.

Briar grinned, waving at her sister as Lasair galloped past. Briar's hair was tangled and it flew behind her. Her green eyes sparkled with delight as she drove her horse to go a little faster. Lasair was only too happy to oblige.

Briar spurred Lasair to go after her sister, laughing as she called out, "Hey! Slow down!"

"So you don't push Petal too hard. You don't want her to get tired, now do you?" Briar replied, making Lasair slow to a canter. The white mare tossed her head, seeming glad for it.

"Isn't this fun? Just like old times," Briar said as Lasair trotted along, catching up to Petal so that Avalynn and Briar were riding side by side.

"Don't worry about that. Come on, Ava, it's not that bad. We'll fit right in," Briar said. "There are plenty of kids, just like us."

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

"Don't be like that, Ava. You know I'll be there," Briar said fiercely. "And if anyone dares to dislike you, I'll sock 'em in the jaw."

"Stick to me and you'll have more than you can count," Briar replied, relaxing from her tough attitude.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

"Yes. I suppose that works," Briar agreed. "But you still want to know some people, of course, just so you can get out of trouble. Not saying you will. But just in case."

Briar sighed, not wanting to counter-arguement. "You need some excitement in your life. You'll be bound to get into some trouble at some point, you know."

Briar placed a hand on her sister's back. "You can't blame yourself for mama's curse," she said softly.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

"I'll be there. Forever and ever. Promise," Briar said softly. She felt helpless.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

"No. I'm going to stay alive. I'll do whatever it takes," Briar insisted angrily.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

"I will," Briar repeated. "I will. I'll use magic if I have to. I'll curse myself if I have to."

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

"I would," Briar replied, her expression determined. "You know I would."

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

"Good. Keep that in mind whenever you feel bad," Briar said, patting her sister's shoulder gently. "I'm here now and that's all that matters." She pulled Avalynn into a tight hug, a tear sliding down her cheek.

((No, they stopped for a bit, to let the horses rest))

"It's okay. It's okay. Hush now, everything will be alright," Briar said, desperately trying to calm her sister.

Briar began singing softly, to calm Avalynn a bit further. With one arm wrapped around her sister, she began the melody.
"On the roof of the house there are bright fairies,
Playing and drinking under the gentle rays of the spring,
Oh, my child,
Oh my child asleep without any care…"

"I'm special. I don't quite know how I do it either," Briar told her, a light smile on her face. "And besides, we're spending time together. Just like in the old days."

"At least its nice to know that we have some of the comforts of home here," Briar said hopefully. "Maybe they have cookies, like mama used to bake them…"

"Come on, let's go. We're going to go get hyped up on some sugar," Briar told her with a bright smile.
