2017 Reading Challenge discussion

I actually put this under the "author you haven't read before" category, but it can fit under several. It's steampunk and the premise is that the American civil war has gone on for longer which has made scientific progress faster, so they have advanced airships, steampowered artificial arms and legs and weapons, etc.

The premise is that a great catastrophe has happened to Seattle, resulting in the city being walled in with a dangerous "blight" gas in there and a bunch of zombies called rotters. It's about a headstrong teenage boy wanting to go into the city and his resourceful mother going in after him. I won't tell you the hows or whys because of spoilers.

The worldbuilding is excellent and the star of the show here. There is a bunch of compelling characters and while the plot isn't exactly surprising, it's never slow and the characters/atmosphere keeps you reading.

I gave it 4 out of 5. Solid read. I've already gotten my hands on books 2 and 3 in the series at my local library.
