Neha Shinde | 15 comments All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
All the Light We Cannot See is a hauntingly appealing novel to live in, learn from, and feel bereft over when the last page is turned. This was one of those emotionally plangent books in which the talent of the storyteller surmounts stylistic inadequacies and ultimately defies one's better judgment. Highly acclaimed, award-winning author Anthony Doerr’s energetic imagination seems steeped: two children engulfed in the horror of World War II, one a sightless girl named Marie-Laure LeBlanc living in Nazi-invaded France, the other a brilliant German orphan boy called Werner Pfenning were on opposite sides in the conflagration that was destroying Europe, and ended up getting swallowed up in a violent conflict, whose paths intersected inevitably as both tried to survive the devastating, waning days of the tragic war. Doerr brings these ordinary children to life in a time when peace seems impossible, and survival unlikely.

Marie-Laure fled Paris with her father after he was entrusted with a museum’s most valuable and dangerous diamond named the Sea of Flames. Unfortunately, along the way he got arrested. Meanwhile, Werner, with a preternatural understanding of circuitry, a talent that won him a place at a barbarous academy for Hitler Youth, was then pressed into military service by the Nazis and affiliated a team assigned with the mission of tracking and destroying anti-German radio broadcasts. When allied bombers attacked Saint-Malo, a coastal city located in northwest of France, in separate locations, both Werner and Marie-Laure were trapped. Eventually Marie-Laure’s broadcasts spared Werner’s life. In return, he found her and saved her from a cancer-suffering German officer titled Sergeant Von Rumpel who was desperate to kill her in his hunt for the fabled golden jewel, the Sea of Flames.

With brisk chapters and sumptuous language, Doerr constructs an unusual, intricate edifice built up of fable and the prodigious inventions of the mechanical, technical and natural world, using prose that resonates deeply and coveys the ephemera of daily existence along with drama, melancholy and hope. Entranced with the bittersweet story he tells, I realized that the writer never forgets to compose flawlessly down to the last detail and the suspenseful rhythm of his chapters. Far more than a conventional war story, it's a throughly focused epic revolving around two peculiar main characters. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds; people try to be good to one another. I totally recommend All the Light We Cannot See, a deeply moving, heartfelt novel that lingers in the mind, whose sentences never fail to thrill.

Tiffany Wibisono | 13 comments East 43rd Street Level 5 by Alan Battersby The thriller book that I just read for this week's assignment is called East 43rd Street and it's all about Nathan Marley, who worked as a Licensed Private Investigator on East 43rd Street. It was six days before Christmas in the evening and he was relaxing himself in McFadden's Bar which is one block away from his office. Then, an expensively-dressed woman walked into the bar and bought a drink with a hundred-dollar bill and immediately went out without having her change back. Marley then was attracted by the woman and decided to follow her. The next morning, the woman went to the office and met Marley for a help. She is called Angela Lake and explained to Mr. Marley that her husband was aking her for a divorce and told her to give back all her jewelleries within a week or else she would lost everything she owned, but she was having a hard time since some of her jewelleries were sold due to her family's financial problem. So, Nat Marley went through into detail investigation as he also felt that Ms. Lake is a kind of a mysterious person. Along his investigation, he was suddenly arrested as a reason of being a robbery and assault. Not too long later, Nathan Marley were free from jail as Captain Ordernberg, the person who arreted him have discovered that the Lakes were the one who should be in prison. In my opinion, this book is interesting and I recommend it to those people who like to read about crime stories. The book will attracts you such that you will not be satisfied until you reach the end of the story since it's a facinating novel.

Karsten Eugene | 3 comments The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

The Joy Luck Club contains 16 interwoven stories about conflicts between Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-raised daughters. Jing-Mei was born from 1 of the Chinese immigrant mothers after the mother went to America to avoid Japan's invasion of Kweilin during World War II. When she was leaving China, she was forced to leave Jing-Mei's half-sisters on the roadside. Jing-Mei was then born to a different father after her mother went to America. Suyuan, which is Jing-Mei's mother intended to return to China for her daughters. However, Suyuan failed to find them before her death.

After Suyuan died, Jing-Mei replaced her mother's place playing mahjong in a weekly gathering her mother organised in China and revived in San Francisco which is called The Joy Luck Club which consists of Suyuan oldest friends and they were also immigrants. They told Jing-Mei that before her mother died, she had finally located her half-sisters address. The 3 old friends of Suyuan urge Jing-Mei to tell her half-sisters about her mother's life. However, Jing-Mei is not so sure about that.

So far, this book is about the club and Jing-Mei's family. I don't recommend this book because it got me bored very easily and I don't feel like reading it anymore.

Kimberly Kwandy | 14 comments The book I recommend is The Fault In Our Stars written by the infamous John Green. This book might be old and I think almost everyone had read it but I bet there's also people who haven't read this book so yes I think for those who haven't read this book, they should read it as soon as possible. This book is basically a romance book, but its not entirely romance, there's a little bit of humour too. The book is about a 17 year old girl, Hazel Grace, who was diagnosed with cancer who was forced to go to a clinic where everyone who suffered from depression will turn okay. Her mom believed she suffered from depression because she rarely leave the house and little did she know, that going to the clinic will change her entire perspective about love and she's willing to fight more to make her live longer.
The story begins when Hazel met a 17/18 year old guy name Augustus Waters in the clinic since he promised this one friend to go together there. Augustus used to be diagnosed with cancer, but it healed but little did they know, cancer might come back. As time goes by, both Hazel and Augustus fall in love. This book will tell the journey they've been through together, but will the ending be as what we thought it will be? This story is like none-other love stories, feelings will be like a roller coaster.

Shannon | 19 comments The book i read for this week is "Freddie's War". As many of you have known, I've talked about this book highly and recommended it in many different occasions. This book is an incredible book that is an extremely easy read. I took only a few hours finishing the book as the story and plot is really interesting, making it hard to put the book down.
You will love this book if you're up for a thrilling adventure and is also interested in history as the events took place in a world war 3 and included some revolutionaries. It also has a bit of romance mixed in there, making it all the more intriguing.
This book follows the main characters Freddie Fox and Laura Marcos on their journeys to being safe from the chaos. Freddie Fox is a young, passionate man who left his city and became an aspiring journalist while Laura Marcos is a beautiful, strong-willed woman who have to leave her father behind in order and find a place to keep her safe.
What i love about this book is the fact that it is relatable and included a lot of life lessons such as woman's right, bravery, and determination to fight for what you believe in. So to conclude, i strongly recommend this book and believe that it's an enjoyable read.

Jade | 9 comments If you've experienced that first love - that heart-wringing, soul-squeezing, crush-the-air-out-of-your-lungs-whenever-you're-apart first love - this book will bitch slap your feels all to hell.

I love it. I love its warmth and its vibrancy, its heartache and its pain, its humor, its meanness, the ugliness, the beauty, the crying, the laughter, the sarcasm. I love Eleanor and I love Park, and I love that there's still a tiny chance for them...and for everyone whose first love was torn away. Even if you never see that person again, they change you in ways that no one else will ever understand. They will always, always hold that little piece of your heart that no one else will ever be able to touch.

I undoubtedly reccommend this book , and if I could, I would give it an 11/10.Eleanor & Park

Jasmine | 20 comments The book i recommend for romance classics is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I like this book as i like reading romance novels

Pride and Prejudice is the classic tale of the irrepressible Elizabeth Bennet, Jane Austen’s most fully realized heroine and a character not unlike her creator in that she possesses a dry wit, enjoys spotting a fool, and refuses to be taken lightly. The story begins as the people of rural Meryton scurry to marry their daughters off to Charles Bingley, a dashing and eligible bachelor who has taken an estate near the Bennets. At the village’s welcoming ball, Elizabeth meets up with a formidable adversary: Bingley’s closest friend, the cold, prideful, extremely wealthy, Mr Darcy who piques her to new heights of antagonism. When Darcy arrogantly urges Bingley to give up his burgeoning courtship of Elizabeth’s sister, misunderstanding threatens to bury all he loves in turmoil and regret. A cautionary tale about the evils of hasty judgment, Pride and Prejudice is arguably one of the most satisfying love stories ever written.

Dyah Lavia | 13 comments Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë The book that I recommend is Jane Eyre.

Jane Eyre is a young orphan being raised by Mrs. Reed, her cruel, wealthy aunt. A servant named Bessie provides Jane with some of the few kindnesses she receives, telling her stories and singing songs to her. One day, as punishment for fighting with her bullying cousin John Reed, Jane’s aunt imprisons Jane in the red-room, the room in which Jane’s Uncle Reed died. While locked in, Jane, believing that she sees her uncle’s ghost, screams and faints. She wakes to find herself in the care of Bessie and the kindly apothecary Mr. Lloyd, who suggests to Mrs. Reed that Jane be sent away to school. To Jane’s delight, Mrs. Reed concurs.

In the book, Maxinne experienced two events, a woman mysteriously died in Mercy hospital and a famous artist was killed out of the blues at the opening of an art exhibition. Maxinne was trying to find out the connection between these two events that took place mysteriously. Matthew | 13 comments Matilda is an exceptional girl, ridiculously brilliant, a voracious reader, and self-sufficient even at the early age of four years...and three months. The story? She's born into a horrible and negligent family too disdainful to see her worth.

I did enjoy this book, but I was a little unimpressed by it. Maybe it's because I've already watched the movie, and it was a good movie honestly. But overall, I recommend this book called Matilda

Valentina | 4 comments Divergent

Divergent is a really awesome book for you guys to read. If you have no time to read it you can watch the movie but if you read it, it would be more interesting. I recommend this book since it is interesting. Four is one of the main character in the book. Beatrice is also one of the main character. Some people may read this book already since the book is already old but it never makes me bored of reading it.

Beatrice "Tris" Prior as she explores her identity within a society that defines its citizens by their social and personality-related affiliation with five factions, which removes the threat of anyone exercising independent will and re-threatening the population's safety. Underlying the action and dystopian focused main plot is a romantic subplot between Tris and one of her instructors in the Dauntless faction, nicknamed Four.

Tania Hartanto | 36 comments When the brother of Stella Delgado, José De La Cruz who is Marley's personal assistant, is charged with the murder of a Russian community man with a fine reputation, Nat Marley, a private investigator in New York, gets involved in a case of Russian Community illegal immigration.

In this situation, and with José in hospital, seriously injured and unable to remember anything, Marley and Stella work side by side searching for the truth, to clear Jose's name  because they are sure that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I really enjoyed the story because it is a thriller book, which is the genre that I am fond of. The author also knows how to keep the story intriguing. It is also easy to read his story without being confused. So I would recommend this book to everyone, especially those who have difficulties understanding a story while reading a book.

David Wirawan | 44 comments The book I recommend is Animal Farm. It is about animals, led by pigs, taking over a farm. At first, everything was going perfectly fine even if there were some minor quarrels and issues. However, one of the leaders (pig) wanted to take over the whole farm. He overthrew his 'friend' and ruled the farm like a dictator (like North Korea). He enslaved the other animals and gave them less food. How would the other animals live the rest of their lives as what they had wished when they overthrew the humans? What would they do in order to live freely?

Overall, I think this book has a good story even tough it is a little bit strange as the animals could talk. I recommend this book to everyone and I rate it 7.62893652 / 10
