Looking forward to my first attempt! It's going to be challenging with a husband, two kids and two dogs distracting me. Any reading will be better than nothing :)

That is what I always say. I've rarely read the entire 24 hours. In part because I also co-host the last several hours on the website and so I take a nap so I am fresh for that. But any reading I do is more than I most likely would have. Plus I love the community!
Welcome Susan! This is a great community and you'll enjoy Dewey's awesome read-a-thon. Any reading is better than no reading :-)
So glad to have you, Susan! This will be just my third Readathon & it's now one of my favorite days of the year!
I have been looking forward to this since I participated in October. I even have my ex looking for children's books at yard sales for me!
You'll have so much fun! October was my first, and it was great. This year my nephew is coming over to spend the weekend with me. We are already planning menus and picking books. I know he won't read for 24 hours, so I told him we can take breaks and watch either movies or television shows adapted from books. I cannot wait!
Linda: What a great idea to keep the book theme going with a little one! My 10yo is participating with me this year & we will miss several hours due to her play rehearsal, but we both thought it was awesome that we're staying with the theme since it is "Into the Woods, Jr". The movies-adapted-from-books idea is fantastic! Sorry for hijacking your page, Susan! The social aspect is one of my favorite parts of Readathon!
Funny how you start to really look forward to these twice-a-year events. When it's October I'm already thinking about April and vice versa! Each year I volunteer and participate a little more in order to feel more prepared for next time. This will be my 3rd.
This will be my 14th. And I am still like a child at Christmas time every time. Look forward to it. Think about it. My family is pretty international so about a month in advance, I start pressuring them into thinking about it. Like seriously, I force them to provide photographic evidence of participation in exchange for love. lol, I'm only half kidding. Love them regardless. But they do it for me.

I love how Amy and Linda are including the kids in their lives. My kids are 10 and 13. While they enjoy reading, they aren't voracious readers (like I've always been). Still, I should work on convincing them to join in somehow - even if it's only 30 min...

Susan: Mine are 13 & 10 also! My 13yo would rather read than do anything else, so it's unfortunate that the timing is such that she'll be at a church retreat during RAT. But I'm very excited that my 10yo is excited about doing it with me, since she isn't quite the reader that big sister is. Her desire to read is growing, however, so hopefully this will help!
It was a late start this morning (my son had opening night for his theater performance last night). I've read a little over 2 hours today (113 pages) of Bearing the Bruise: A Life Graced by Haiti and about 80 min of audiobook The Life and the Adventures of a Haunted Convict. Pretty good considering, I've been driving kids various places, doing laundry and preparing for a meeting tomorrow :)
I'm going to start The Secret Place and read the 3 remaining chapters of the Haiti book along the way. I may also finish the audiobook...
Life got in the way of reading as much as I would have liked but any reading is better than none! I read for 4 hours (200 pages) and finished an audiobook (another 4 hours). At least I read more than a normal Saturday. Looking forward to October!
Activating this thread for October 2016 birthday read-a-thon. I'm telling my family that the best gift they can give me is to let me read!

What a fun RAT! My family was respectful of my birthday wishes and gave me plenty of free time to read. Of course there are always distractions - people wishing me happy birthday, visit from my Mom, my son's homecoming, etc.I ended up reading about 458 pages - finished reading a partially read book, completely read one book and read about half of another book.
Hopefully, everyone else had an enjoyable RAT!

Last night, my 15 yo son decided to join me today! Fortunately, we made a trip to the library earlier this week. He has a large stack of books awaiting him. We've been moving throughout the house reading and sharing bits from our books. What a fun experience!
It's so great to hear that your son Andrew is joining you! I think it's always more enjoyable with company. What are you currently reading?

I just finished We Should All Be Feminists. Wonderful read! Short too. I want to read more of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
