What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

A childrens picture book that was read to me at school, but they didn't let us see the pictures for some reason. The plot sounds similar to alice in wonderland, a girl gets transported to another world by looking through a telescope or something similar. Ends up on some weird adventure with a whole bunch of characters including a master of disguise and a superhero type character.

It ends with them using the wood from a specific type of tree to fight some evil ghosts...

Oh another thing I just remembered - there was a group of villains called the bad habits, who personified children's bad habits...

The "telescope" part reminds me of The Astonishing Stereoscope by Jane Langton.
