The youngest ever Mage and the youngest ever Master Mechanic -- both of them taught that the other Guild's works are really just tricks -- are thrown together after they are the only survivors of a caravan.

(Just for fun in genre -- there are hints that this may be a far future story set on another planet. . . .)

Mary Catelli | 432 comments Followed by The Hidden Masters of Marandur, The Assassins of Altis, and The Pirates of Pacta Servanda. In which is established that it is a far future story set upon another world WITHOUT turning the mages into sufficient advanced technologists.
