Devastated and heartbroken, Kyth tries to attack Mai, but he is no match for the Majat. Amidst their argument, a Kaddim force led by Nimos rides in. They disable Mai using their mind skill and capture both him and Kyth. Mai is so badly beaten that it is unclear whether he will survive. Despite his hatred for the Majat, Kyth cannot stand for this treatment and when the Kaddim are about to mutilate Mai by cutting off his arms, Kyth summons his power and protects the Majat. Mai is able to fight again and breaks them out of captivity, but his wounds are so grave that after their escape he collapses in the middle of the Grassland. Fortunately, they are intercepted by a rescue party send from the Cha’ori camp, including a skilled healer, EGEY BASHI, and another Diamond-ranked Majat, RAISHAN.
As Egey Bashi applies some of his most potent remedies to save Mai’s life, Raishan must face the Kaddim pursuit trying to recapture their prisoners. Kyth uses his newly developed ability to defend someone else from the Kaddim power, and under his protection Raishan is able to drive off the attackers. As they discuss the aftermath, Kyth learns an amazing truth: when Mai struck Kara down he used his skill to make the blow appear fatal, while sending her into a coma instead. This way he ensured that the Guild believes her to be dead while also sparing her life. There is a catch, though. Having struck the blow, Mai is the only one who can revive her – if he survives his wounds.
