The first 3 stanzas of the poem are as follows:

When the ravages of time
Begin to tell on your face
What was once the beauty of youth
Is now only dignity and grace

When the energy you’ve been robbed of
And find that you can’t replace
It’s ravages of time
Now apparent on your face

The beauty you once possessed
Hasn’t faded, but altered somehow
Where there was once a sensuous twinkle
There is wisdom and knowledge now

The rhythm is a bit clumsy but nevertheless the poem has something meaningful to say. The words are comforting.

Nina | 6069 comments I so agree. Especially when I am facing my eighty ninth birthday on Friday. I am celebrating by going to our wonderful Art Museum for lunch and a present.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Happy birthday, in case I forget on the day, Nina.

Nina, that is wonderful. 89 years old! I can't believe it. You're so sharp and on the ball. Have a great birthday! I'm marking my calendar!

Nina | 6069 comments What a nice surprise, Joy as that picture of the birthday cake brought a smile. It is my first "bite."

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Glad you liked it Nina. I liked the spring-like colors of the cake decoration.

Nina | 6069 comments Now that is my smile for the day. Thanks. And thank you, Jim for your wishes, As I have mentioned before I am writing my memoirs and the beginning takes place in the hospital where I was born but just before that the dr came into the waiting room where my maternal grandmother and father were sitting and said to them "We can't save both. It is your choice is it to be the baby or the mother." According to the story I was told, my father turned to my grandmother and said, "I can't make the choice." My grandmother said, "Save the baby." Actually I was born Caesarean with five doctors and six nurses attending and with the skill of those men and prayers from the waiting room; not only did I survive so did my mother. End of story but just thought it interesting that I lived to be an old lady. And glad of it.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Tough beginning. Glad you've given it so much mileage.
:)

I was telling my neighbor about you the other day. He's 94 or 5 now. I can never remember exactly. His mother was still alive & living on her own when I first met him. I thought he was dotty since he kept saying, "Momma said" & he was 85 or so. She was 104 or 105 when she died, but lived in a house with several other older ladies & a 'young' (65+) lady to help take care of them.

Nina, that certainly is a suspenseful way to begin your memoirs! So glad that you and your mom both survived. Did you have any sisters or brothers?

Jim, lately I've heard of so many people I know who have relatives living far into their 90s and even some who have hit 100 and are still going strong. I have a 100 year old aunt who still lives in the house she was married in years ago. She's in good health as far as I know and has 3 women as companions round the clock. Her daughter (in her 60s) lives nearby.

Another aunt of mine lived to 104 years old. She died around 2008.
Here we are visiting her in 2008 for her 104th birthday: ===>

She was still lucid and made good conversation.
PS-She was in a lovely nursing home because she had had a stroke several years before and was in a wheelchair.

Nina | 6069 comments I. too, had an aunt that lived to be one hundred and four in her own house but sadly died four months after having to be moved to a nursing home. However, both my mother and mother in law died at ages 83. So my husband and I have so far outlived them.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, as they say in Australia, good on ya for living a long life! My husband and I have both outlived our dads but not our moms. My mom died at 90 and his mom died at 93.

Nina | 6069 comments Because of the surgery my mother was unable to have any other children. So I was an only child as was my father too as his would be sibling sister died as an infant before he was born. So I was too an only grandchild on my paternal side and only one other grandchild besides me on my maternal side. Therefore, I had only one first cousin. Lots of first cousins once removed, however so I never thought I was missing relatives.

My goodness, Nina. From being an only child, you certainly have reproduced a lot of people! LOL

PS- How many grands and how many great-grands?
