Yay, Martha and Doreen, I love you! ;-)It's so great to see this wonderful group brought back to life!
This is wonderfully detailed and rich intro. to the group. I am going to check out some of the links that have been listed. Meanwhile, being a novice in online reading groups, I have already started a Good Reads discussion page on C. Gilligan's In a Different Voice: Psychological Theory and Women's Development Martha, thank you for keeping this group rolling along.
This is such a wonderful group! I've been using goodreads on my phone mostly so it's hard to explore what the site really has to offer. I'm so glad I found this group. I'm currently doing the popsugar reading challenge but I'm going to look at this one too. Hoping to make some new friends, find some new books. And as a little intro to me - I suffer with anxiety, depression and ptsd, I love drawing, reading and football, and I'm currently learning Spanish and Swedish :)

Hi Claire! Welcome :) I know what you mean about the app, it's pretty frustrating for anything other than adding books to shelves! Ah interesting, I did that one last year, are you enjoying it? I decided I need to cut back a bit on challenges this year (a bit of a challenge junkie) so haven't taken it on again, but it's a great way of diversifying your reading. Enjoy getting stuck into the group and shout if you have any ideas or questions, you've come in at a great time when we're trying out some new things

Hi Claire, welcome! I find it fascinating that you're learning Swedish. I had a friend who studied it at University and I think it's a beautiful language. As for Spanish, I tried it myself several times, but failed miserably because I'm not good at self-teaching... I do understand a lot of it, though, what with Italian being my mother tongue – they don't sound so different!

I am a new member to Goodreads and slowly browsing to find which groups would interest me. Very pleased to find a group that supports mental health.

Yes Martha a very good introduction for newbies. Feel free to add me as a Friend if you are new too as I only joined Goodreads last week!

Hi Everyone, I just joined. Glad to be hear. My name is Jackie. I'm from Canada, 37 years old. I love reading, who here doesn't?! I like pyschological suspense, mostly. I read almost anything, except pure romance stories, I don't mind if it's part of the story though. I also don't read a lot of history. Look foreword to getting to know everyone.

hi guys! I'm a 23 yo Indonesian girl who spent half of my life in Arab countries. I have been and still struggling with anxiety, depression, addictions. I'm so excited that I found this group! I love books, I can read about anything but I love to learn more about mental illnesses so i can understand myself and others better. I'm here looking for friends, and book recommendations :)

If you're new here, please stop by our Introductions thread and say hello. Say as much or as little as you like, talking about whatever condition or circumstances that have brought you here is entirely optional.
We have two group reads per month (from Feb '17 onwards) - one mental health themed and one non-mental health themed. The mental health read operates on a traditional book club style system - you can volunteer to choose a book for one of the months and lead the discussion. Sign up here. The non-mental health reads are chosen by the moderator to fit with categories that have been voted for by the group. You an also look at the discussions for the 2016 group reads. These will remain open so it's never too late to read the book and participate in the discussion!
As of 2017, this group is moving towards creating a database of book recommendations and reviews to help people read more widely outside of the monthly group reads. Visit the directory to see the books we've got so far, or visit the submissions thread to tell us about a book you'd recommend.
While we're building up the list of reviews, have a look at our bookshelf for inspiration, many organised by the type of disorder(s) it covers. Some of these have been contributed by our members, but others have been found from lists and forums outside of GR, so may not have been read by anyone in the group [yet].
Head over to the Book Discussions folder to talk about any other books or book-related topics outside of the various group reads and review titles. If you've had a look at our bookshelves and want some recommendations, you could start a thread here and I'm sure our friendly members will be delighted to share their favourites!
We all know what it's like when we just need someone to listen, so we have a Support Chat folder. Likewise, we also have a folder for Non-mental health chat for when members want a break from talking about their illnesses but still want to get to know each other. This folder can be about literally anything, books, TV, music, hobbies, whatever! As long as it's not violating any of the community guidelines around being offensive/discriminatory etc., this space is for everyone to do what they want with.
Why not join our MHB Reading Challenge? It runs from 1st June 2017 to 31st May 2018, and you can sign up at any time within that period. To find out more and sign up, click here
If you're an author or a blogger looking for people to review your work, you are more than welcome - we have Author's Corner ready and waiting for you! This group is primarily about mental health so please keep it relevant to that area.
If you've come across any great websites/videos/other resources that you think other members might like to look at, we have a Resources folder ready and waiting!
Finally, I've archived some of the old threads that haven't been active for a long time, but they're still all there in the Archive folder. If there are any that people want to be reactivated, please do give me a shout and I'll happily move them back into one of the folders.
That's all folks, we hope that you'll enjoy being part of this group. Be good to each other, have fun, and if you have any suggestions for things you'd like to see, they are always very much welcome, so head over to the Suggestion Box or contact one of your friendly moderators.
