I'm arranging these topics in line with the book's chapter for neatness and order in our discussions :) Also to make sure we talk about all chapters in detail. So if you are talking about the work chapter, comment under this topic. Ya dig? Cool :)

Nikky (viru5detected) | 11 comments My currently employer is very keen on affirmative action so the number of women is basically equal. Now, I have this male colleague at work who is convinced that women (not most, all) get ahead at the workplace using sex. Our chain of command, from our floor supervisor to our manager, fully comprises women - 5 of them in all and this dude has zero respect for any of them because as far as he's concerned, they all got there using sex or the potential of it rather than actual qualifications and work ethic so they are all beneath him. Never mind that even on our floor, the women are more hardworking and dare I say more ambitious than the men.

The men all think that by virtue of being men, they deserve not only to be there but to also get promotions despite doing the least. Meanwhile, the women have to work twice as hard to constantly prove that we deserve to be there alongside the men and when our promotion comes through it's still reduced to our sex/gender rather than our portfolio. We are expected to be pretty for the men (lots of sexual harassment in that office) but when the men do find us attractive, it's a problem

If all women needed to get ahead is use sex, then why aren't there more women at the top? Why are there on;y 16% women CEOs in the entire Africa? Like, if this is a working method, women would be in charge of everything by now, right?

''For every feminist action, there is an equal and opposite beauty myth reaction...

The closer women come to power, the more physical self-consciousness and sacrifice are asked of them. “Beauty” becomes the condition for a woman to take the next step. You are now too rich. Therefore, you cannot be too thin"

This reminded me of the time when the all female Russian crew planning a future trip to the moon had a press conference and they were asked about how they would survive without cosmetics for 8 days.
'You have made good progress in the STEM field but how will you survive without shampoo?"

This reminded me of some excerpt I saw a while back about someone explaining the entitlement that come with privilege. When men say, 'the women are taking OUR jobs'. Who said these are your jobs? Why do you already assume these jobs are yours?Smh.
