I saw The Hobbit in a list of classic books. I've never thought about it being classical. Is it old enough to be considered a classic? Thoughts?

Let's see- It was originally written in the thirties, so I would say it is boarder line. Well on it's way to being a classic, and probably considered to be one by many, but not yet in general acceptance as classical. Personally, I would shelve it with classics, as I kinda think of it and Winnie-the-Pooh together. And Winnie-the-Pooh is most definatly a classic. What is it that makes a book a classic, in your opinion?

To me a classic is a book that stands the test of time. If it continues to be read by many, and you can still relate to themes and characters after decades have past, then I would consider it a classic. Just not sure how much time should pass. I feel like the older it is the more tested it is as a classic.

Ah yes. That is a good definetion. I think The Hobbit has had nearly enough time to be considered a classic and continues (and probably will continue) to be loved and relateableised (new word!) so once a good bit more time has passed it should be agreed classical by the majority of scholars.
