HRC Ravenclaw Common Room discussion

I'm slightly more than halfway through this book. It is the May book, right? Has anyone else started it?

Hi Melinda! You are correct, this is the book for May. I just got my copy from the library, but haven't started it yet.

I'm a few chapters in. What do you think so far? The imagery is beautiful. Ironic, right, since one of the protagonists is blind?

So it was slow for me to get into but now I'm blazing through. Yesterday I was halfway through. Now I'm almost done. I was having a tough time with the passage of time, jumping back and forth between past and present. Anyone else?

I've just started, and I think it's going to be a fairly quick read for me. I love the back and forth of each chapter. I'm probably about 50 pages in, so I'll avoid this group for a couple of days :) I'm dodging spoilers.

I still have QUITE a ways to go (exams...end of school year...etc) but I'm going to be flying to Bangkok on Friday and gosh darn it, I really want to finish this book!! I love it so far and can't wait to be done with my work so I can get back to some fun reading. :)

Mont st michele is gorgeous. Bayeux and its tapestry. The d day beaches n all the war museums. Ive been loads of times

So, while ready this book, I came across the part about the German Jews being called half breeds. My husband once asked while watching the 7th Harry Potter movie if the concept was related to that whole period in time. Definitely made me think twice when I read that.

Oh my gosh this book was sooo good. I am fascinated by WWII literature and like someone said in an earlier post, the imagery is so beautiful and poignant. I had to backtrack a few times to truly understand the jumping back and forth but, all in all, I liked the time jumping. It made for a very interesting little movie in my head. I missed reading Memoirs of a Geisha for April so I'm working on that one now.

Finally got around to finishing this one, and I really enjoyed it. I agree about the jumping back and forth in time being a bit difficult to keep up with- and I usually have no problem with it. But this time I kept having to flip back and forth to remind myself what period in time that I was reading. I loved Etienne. I was a bit sad to see how very briefly Marie's and Werner's paths crossed. Such beautiful imagery. Overall, a good book. I just love historical fiction. (:

I'm closing in on the end - 75% done! SO GOOD! It has been my treadmill reading for the last few weeks. The imagery is so gorgeous, and the story is really interesting. I now see exactly why they've been doing the jumping back and forth in time and between Marie-Laure and Werner's stories - all of those jumps are getting smaller and smaller...

AHHHH. Just finished!

I didn't love the ending (everything that happened after 1944), honestly. It felt very different than the arc and tone of everything that had happened up until that point. Anyone agree/disagree?

I felt the same, Marisa. The end of the book almost felt like it was written by someone else.
