Hello ... Mara has promoted me to co-moderator and we are working to better organize this group.

Please bear with us as we create new folders and move various threads to the appropriate folders.

It's our hope that this new organization will help all of us as we learn to navigate this site.

Linda | 57 comments Can you please tell me how to set up my shelves? I transported books from Shelfari back in JAN or FEB. I'm totally confused when I look at my shelves. There are so many I guess that were auto created; into century's, women's detective agency, 1001 books to read before you die etc. I appreciate any help. I've been playing around here since SAT & it's overwhelming.

message 7: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments Linda, what is it you want to do? On Goodreads, shelves equate to the old Shelfari tags. Whatever methodology you used for tags on Shelfari may be applied as shelves here.

What exactly are you struggling with in setting up shelves?

message 8: by Linda (new)

Linda | 57 comments Oh Jonetta I'm glad you commented. I had failed to send you a friend request & I wanted to let you know that I finally got to where I should be to see the same things you were telling me about friends & deleting. I had to go to GoodReads.com & add he icon to my desktop. I was thrilled to figure it out.

OK that makes sense. My shelves are already creates so when I complete a book it automatically goes where it's supposed to, is that correct? I've been adding day completed & review but haven't seen a place for tags. Sent you a friend request

message 9: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments I'm glad that worked out! Mystery solved.

Once your shelves are created, you've got to add books to them. Your books will not automatically be added to them unless the books were already on the shelves following the import.

When you finish reading a book and you are editing the review, you can select "choose shelves" and then select from the list you already have. If you want to add a shelf that's not on the list, just type the name and select "add [whatever you've named the shelf]".

Make sense?

message 10: by Linda (new)

Linda | 57 comments Yes it does. One more question, how to you mark a book a favorite, haven't seen a "red heart" or do I add a "favorite shelf".

message 11: by Jonetta (last edited Jun 17, 2016 09:31AM) (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments You should already have a favorites shelf. If you don't, yes, add it.

message 14: by Linda (new)

Linda | 57 comments Making progress, got all my duplicate books deleted. WOO HOO!
I am not happy with my shelves which are based on my "tags" from Shelfari, too confusing. I want to create new shelves like: Historical Fiction, Cozy Mystery, Mystery/ Suspense etc. is it possible for me to delete my existing shelves & then make title I want like Harry Bosch Series, & above & then take the time to go through all my books & put the on shelf? Thanks!

message 15: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments The short answer is yes! You can delete shelves at will.

Go to My Books. You'll see at the top of the column on the left, "bookshelves" with an edit selection next to it. Select that and it's pretty self explanatory from there.

message 16: by Linda (new)

Linda | 57 comments Thanks again Jonetta! If I delete all my shelves I will be able to recreate what I want and add my books right?

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 160 comments Lucky Linda. I will never seem to get rid of my duplicates. What a drag. I have so many, only the first hundred show at a time. Geez!

Dosha I'm OCD about things that don't really matter...lol like duplicate books & redoing my shelves here because they are created by my "tags" from Shelfari & I don't like it! I had numerous tags so my next "to do" is to go through every book & put it on one shelf. Cooking & house cleaning, don't care, need some OCD there.

I have to share this with someone who will appreciate it, I got a $336 credit to aMazon from some Apple settlement regarding purchase of Ebooks. I think it's been a year or maybe longer, I had forgot. I'm over the moon though...book money!

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 160 comments I only got 14.00. I'm jealous! It will expire in a year so, you better get busy, lol.

I'm sleeping on it lol so I don't spend it too quick. I'm on a fixed income since I retired so I look for deals. When I was working & new releases were usually 9.99 I bought them or pre-ordered. I have my wish list on Amazon & wait for price drop or look for 1.99, 2.99 deals. I'm so happy to find some of my Shelfari friends here!!

I'm sleeping on it, I'm retired now so I don't buy new releases like I did when I was working. Always looking for a price drop or a deal.
WHEW I've put in an hour or two working on my shelves, it will take a while but will be so worth it to me. When I was "tagging" on Shelfari I always put the year Int ad book & other unnecessary info so that's why I had a mess.

message 24: by Linda (new)

Linda | 57 comments What's the best way to share deals on Ebooks on Amazon? On Shelfari we had a thread in a group or maybe a group. Thanks.

Most of the groups on Goodreads have some sort of deals and freebies thread. That is where you would share these.

Linda | 57 comments I've imported all my Amazon books but I've noticed not all my reviews show up. I reviewed all my books even though some may have been only a few sentences. I'm wondering why some are there & others are not? Thanks.

Katie (BooksRUs) (katiesbooksrus) | 1 comments Hi! I hope this is the right form to post to. So I know on Shelfari, when we searched for books, there was a button on the bottom of the screen that said something like "combine books?". However, when I looked for that here, I'm not seeing it. Is there a different place that's at now?

message 31: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments Combining editions is a librarian function. You may make a combination request in the Goodreads Librarians group.

Ladyslott How do you enter a book that you have read and are now re-reading?

message 33: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Ladyslott wrote: "How do you enter a book that you have read and are now re-reading?"

Unfortunately, GR doesn't have a re-read option. It is something they say they are working on but ...

The work around is to add another edition of the same book to your shelves with the new read date.
I really dislike this option as I hate having duplicates of the same book on my shelves, so I just edit my review with the date that I originally read the book.

Clara Baker Baldwin (cbbcab) | 10 comments I think I would just edit the comments with that date.
In hindsight, I wish I had done that, and started a book list much earlier than I did.

message 38: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dlopezgirl83) Hello, I am not even sure if this is where/how I post my question. I was on shelfari and grudgingly came here. I had an issue with all my books being on shelves that transferred from over there. Well fast forward almost a year. I use the GR app on my phone just to track what I'm reading and find new things to read. I got on the computer and onto this site and saw I was able to delete all those stupid shelves that I hated without deleting the actual books as read. Ok sorry stick with me. The only things I really want to get out of this site since I hate the conversations (reading them on my phone is really confusing) is that I want to be able to track "to be read" "reading" and "read". I would also love to be able to put a book on a shelf named Did not finish. This was possible on shelfari and was immensely helpful/useful. I made a shelf by that name but since it's not the 3 exclusive, I seem to not be able to add books to it. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Can anyone help me? I hate trying to remember if I started a book and didn't like it and I don't want to count them as read and mess up my goal. Thanks in advance. I do miss the convos we all used to have but now it's more work than it's worth. Dawn

message 39: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments If you go to My Books and then edit bookshelves (far left column), you can then designate your DNF shelf as exclusive.

FYI, I refuse to use the app, even on my phone. Way too limiting.

I don't use a phone to access Goodreads, but I have read posts by people who state that the app is terrible.... if they use a phone they access the website via their phone and work from there. (Not sure that made sense...)

message 41: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dlopezgirl83) thanks ladies. I may try accessing the website instead of the app. if I make the did not read exclusive one of the others won't be. it's only 3 at a time. :(

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 160 comments I have a lot of shelves. DNF is one of them. I am very happy with DNF shelf for my own personal info. And I return it to the TBR shelf so it does not throw my challenge off.

I generally use the GR website, however I'm responding to this post on my iPod touch app. It is okay. I have learned the hard way that the app on my android tablet is a nightmare. It freezes a lot and then nothing is accessible. The kindle on my android is not too great either for the same reason. Kindle app on iOS is good though.

message 43: by LibraryCin (last edited Dec 01, 2016 12:29PM) (new)

LibraryCin | 196 comments I don't have a smartphone, but when I use my tablet, I use the website, not the app. But then, I do that for most site (if it's even possible!). I find that it's not always an option to switch to the regular site if there is an app (or if it's possible, I can't always find how to switch it! Frustrating!).

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 160 comments Cindy, is your tablet and iOS or an android? I'm beginning to think that I just don't know how to use androids well.

message 45: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 196 comments My tablet is an android.

message 46: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 196 comments Are you not able to get to the website from your android tablet? Maybe I need to look again. Maybe it's one site that I'm just not accessing on my tablet? Either way, it has been a while since I've been on GR via my tablet, so maybe I need to double check that I was able to access the actual website through it.

I have an android tablet and I can access Goodreads website. The little I've done has worked fine.

Thank you! The little bit I access GR on my tablet likely is via the regular website then. I just got second-guessing myself!
