30.1 - Schatzie’s Task: North to Alaska
I am looking forward to taking my family home to Alaska this summer. It was a great place to grow up. It’s also a great place to visit, since I could never live there again now that I know what ‘seasons’ are.

This is a two book task. Read a book from two different options.

Required: Identify which options you used when posting.

Option 1: Since I was born and raised there, read a book with “coming of age” as a main page genre. Genre may be stand alone or embedded.

Option 2: I will be spending a lot of time with my sister. So for this option, read a book with the word “sister” found intact in the TITLE (subtitles do not count). Sisterhood, Sisters, Sisterly, etc., all work.

Option 3: I have a friend who runs in a race called the Mountain Marathon every 4th of July in Seward, Alaska. I look forward to attending this drunken party to watch him (maybe things have changed since I left, but I’m guessing not). Read a book by an author whose initials can be found in MOUNTAIN MARATHON. All initials should be included and if a book has multiple authors, all of the authors must fit the task. Letters may only be used as often as they are found in the phrase.

Option 4: I’m an Air Force brat, so read a non-fiction book about military life in the US Armed Forces. Any branch of the US military will work: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, or Navy. The book's description should clearly indicate that the book is about US military life and experience.

Great task! Could you please verify the genre "Coming of Age" for the following books? Thanks!

I'm thinking that this book - Lions of Kandahar: The Story of a Fight Against All Odds - would work for option 4. I had it scheduled for Winter SRC 2015 but never got around to reading it. Perhaps I can try for Summer 2016.

Hi Sandi, I don't see "coming of age" as a main page genre. If it was on there, it could pop back on.

Sandy, that is a good question. I'll gave Kristina tweak the wording of that option. I will say that all of the authors initials need to be represented in MOUNTAIN MARATHON.

Is Black Hawk Down acceptable for option 4?

Hi Suzanne, I will accept this book because it does show military experience, even though the book's description does not state which branch of the US Armed forces were involved. It was the Delta Force and the Rangers that were involved in this particular battle and they are both part of the US Army.

Hi Valerie, this book does meet the coming of age genre requirement. I also noticed "children's" listed, so make sure it meets the SRC requirements for that. Enjoy you book.

for your challenge, what is the ruling on "childrens" books? (specifically Huckleberry Finn which is showing children's currently) - it meets the SRC requirements

For option 2, since you phrase it as the word sister being found "intact" in the title, I'm assuming that Trans-Sister Radio will work?

Hi Stacy, This book doesn't work because it is fiction. Opt. 4 is for a nonfiction book.
