Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2603 comments The Bat (Harry Hole, #1) by Jo Nesbø I've heard very good things about the Harry Hole series and I was not disappointed. The reader of this audio did a very good job with both main accents, the Australian and the Norwegian.

Although this is the first in the series, you almost think this volume was later because the character seems fully realized. The backstory is revealed slowly in dialog between characters. The setting was excellent, Harry is out of his element sent to Australia by his bosses to look into the murder of a young Norwegian woman. Harry is assigned someone to work with, Andrew Kensington is an aborigine, unusual in the police force especially as a detective.

Throughout the story, we meet other aboriginal characters and hear stories of their culture, a number from the "dream time" that, rather than slowing the story, make it more interesting - at least to me.

Harry begins to think there is a serial killer and that Inger Holter's death was part of that. The trouble is finding the killer of course, there are very few clues. As Andrew and Harry investigate, they become friends and Harry takes on more of a role in the investigation. One of the problems for Harry is that he is an alcoholic in recovery. As things get more stressful, Harry's grip on his demon becomes harder to hold.

The ending was unique and made me certain that I wanted to read more Nesbo.

Susie It sounds very interesting to this Aussie. I'm keen to listen to the audio too as I'd love to hear a good Aussie accent - a rare thing! Thanks for your review. :-)

i thought it was a good aussie accent but you have to give me some leeway because i am American who loves accents but i'm far, from expert! I'll be very interested in how you view it.

Blueberry (blueberry1) For some reason I gave this 1 star. I don't remember why and didn't write a review. I liked The Son a lot though.
