Vaelin Hi everyone,

Robert Crais. I have been hearing ALOT of great things about this guy and I have only read 2 of his books....so please let me know which of his works I should be reading.....I recently bought The Forgotten Man for $1 but havent dived in yet

Do the series follow a tight story arc or are alot of them fairly stand alone??

Thanks

ElaineY I've read (listened, actually) to all of the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series and while each can be a standalone, I'm one of those who have to start a series from Book 1. This is because it will usually tell me the history of the lead character. It's important to me to know his background and understand where he's coming from.

If this isn't important to you and you're more interested in the plot and investigation, you can start anywhere.

That said, because Joe Pike appears in several of the books, it's better to know how he came to be Elvis's friend and what's his back story. He's got his own series now and I actually preferred the Pike series to Elvis Cole's.

I am more into Joe Pike than Elvis Cole. I started with The Watchman, based on The Pirate (fellow mod's) recommendation. Suspect is good too. It's a standalone and it has a dog co-hero. :)

Brian | 15 comments I love all of Robert Crais's books. I prefer the later Joe Pike focused novels, but all are wonderful.

Roger Cave | 18 comments Yep, I enjoyed Crais books too.

There are specifically a couple i enjoyed - The Monkey's Raincoat and L.A. Requiem

The second of these gives some background to Pike's character and may help if you don't want to read them in order (I think it's book 8).
