I had read the Zones of Thought series before and they are very different. I like them much better than The Peace War because they are more complex in character and multi-strand plotting. I found the Peace War very choppy and awkward as a novel but the idea of the bobbles sitting there on the landscape, even changing the weather, was pretty fantastic. Overall I felt it read like a short story--an exploration of a "what if" idea, not a full novel. I can barely remember the characters now (and it's only been a couple months since I read it--not in response to this group, just coincidently).
The bobbles definitely have far reaching implications, and from what I hear they are elaborated on in future books.
