Chester's Mill, Maine, a peaceful small town, is suddenly cut off from the rest of the world by an invisible dome. Understandably, the townsfolk are mystified and, as the days go by, terrified. While supposedly trying to quell the fears of the people, second selectman Big Jim Rennie, is secretly ecstatic about the Dome as it helps him towards his personal agenda of being the supreme leader of Chester's Mill. Rennie stacks the police department with thugs, the worst of which is his own son Junior, incites riots so that he might save the people from themselves, and helps to frame an innocent man for several horrible murders.
Working against Rennie are 3 young teens, the town's newspaper editor, Julia Shumway, and an ex-Iraq war vet named Dale Barbara who has been recalled into service by order of the President. Rennie's hatred for Shumway and "Barbie" feeds his desire to destroy them but the people's unrest and the environmental conditions inside the Dome threaten the futures of everyone trapped inside.
I've had this book for quite a while and the sheer size of it kept me from reading it. No book needs to be this long! However, I did enjoy it quite a bit although I didn't think I would ever be done with it. I watched the tv series when it aired a few years ago and there is absolutely no comparison to the book. Although they both start out the same, their plots quickly diverge and the tv show became quite silly. The book, however, is dark and horrific - exactly what you would expect from Stephen King. Skip the series - read the book.
Totally agree, the series was ridiculous. I did however enjoy the adaptation of 11/22/63, available on Hulu. It strayed from the book but not enough to bother me. Under the Dome was dreadful from the get go.
