Some good ones Guy! I hadn't heard of that one by Shepherd before, but it looks fun. Curious to hear what you think of Confessions - I have a copy of that around somewhere in my house waiting to be read.

Greg, If you have seen or heard of the movie the "A Christmas Story" - a favorite of mine - you know the book. Jean Shepherd actually is the narrator in the movie. I have about 12 books that were published in my birth year as a challenge - This was one of them. I think it will be a fun read. I love the movie.

Lake Wobegone Days is a book I liked a lot, Colleen. Hope you do also!
Right, now that I've seen Greg's list, how could I forget that I'm also planning to read The Invisible Man?

Burial Rites was a five start book for me. I find it hard to believe that an Australian so perfectly captures the Scandinavian mood. Dark, but fantastic.

Hi Shirley, I am reading A Thousand Acres and The Forgotten Garden as well - in fact, I thought I would get a head start last week and started A Thousand Acres and got so involved with it, I finished on Sunday night, July 31st! It is an awesome book, the storyline is not that unusual, but it really stands out from others of the same genre of families and farmlife.
Terry wrote: "Shirley wrote: "My reading has slowed down a bit, but I am aiming to readThe Forgotten Garden

That sounds great, Terry! I am now well into The Forgotten Garden and really enjoying it, so am now looking forward to A Thousand Acres too!
Evelyn wrote: "letters Yann Martel wrote about book recommendations, and mailed to the PM every other week, with the recommended book, for 4 years."Martel sounds like one inspirational character!

Cathie wrote: "Plans for August thus far: finish Breakfast of Champions

Breakfast of Champions was a favorite of mine when I read it years back.
So I have just mucked up all my plans by ordering the new Harry Potter which I will read as soon as it arrives.

A great selection Cathie!

Evelyn - I just got your note regarding Screw tape Letters - Funny - I was thinking Illustrations? I'll have to check... ;)
Less than a week left of August and I still have a few books that I'd like to get through - Romeo and Juliet likewise should be quick, but I want to watch another adaptation first
The Golden Notebook
I really haven't been reading much at all this month, I think it's a combination of the heat, watching the Olympics and not being able to settle into hardly anything that I pick up. I hope everyone else is getting along better.
Dhanaraj wrote: "I will continue with The Betrothed. And when I complete it I may read Yoko Ogawa's Hotel Iris."My son just bought me The Betrothed for my birthday. I'd never heard of it, but it's a lovely edition, although it looks rather long. I hope it's good.
Pink wrote: "My son just bought me The Betrothed for my birthday. I'd never heard of it, but it's a lovely edition, although it looks rather long. I hope it's good."It's an Italian classic and during highschool it's a mandatory book. I hope you will like it.
Thanks dely, I hope so too. I don't plan to start it yet, but it does look very interesting, I just need some more time to devote to it.
Pink wrote: "Thanks dely, I hope so too. I don't plan to start it yet, but it does look very interesting, I just need some more time to devote to it."Yes, it's a demanding book, there's a lot inside. We usually study it during a whole school year so take your time.
Dhanaraj wrote: "@Pink: THE BETROTHED is a lovely feel-good story. Recently read and loved it."That's good to hear, thanks :)
Pink, I am still working on my August books too. I think there will be two The Great Fortune and The Dust That Falls from Dreams which I will have to read next month! I am quite pleased with this. The Great Fortune is the first of the Balkan Trilogy and tI want to read with the other two of the trilogy if I find I like it. So you have been diverted by the Olympics huh!?
Chrissie, yes I spent 2 weeks watching all the Olympic events whenever I had a chance, so done little reading during that time, but I loved it!
What is important its that you are enjoying yourself, Pink. Pink, I just have to ask you. I saw you gave Silent Spring only three stars. Did you react to her lyrical writing? If it is the other elements that dissuades you from more stars, I think you should still consider Under the Sea Wind. There you get the lyrical in nature writing.
