Hey guys, I want to open up the forum this month and just ask the very broad question... how did you find The Butcher's Hook? For those of you who read it, did you enjoy it?

I adore this book trailer for The Butcher's Hook, it's very illustrative and reminiscent of the book's cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5mCW...

Sarah I am only about a quarter of the way through so I probably won't be commenting further for a while! At this current stage, I have no idea where this book could possibly be going!!

I'm a little late in finishing too; I have a tiny bit of the audiobook to go (which is narrated by the author) and there doesn't seem like enough time for a conclusion!

One of the previews said there is a murder and I've been waiting this entire time to find out who. Anne is so vengeful it could be anyone.

Well there you go, I'm also not finished the book! We can always pick up on this discussion when everyone is finished!

Have you enjoyed listening to the audio book? I've been lugging the big paperback around with me, Sara! hehe

I did enjoy the audiobook! Ellis put so much depth into how she voiced each person that immediately gave me a good sense of their character. If I'd read it instead I might not have though Onions was so bad but it was impossible to listen to him and think he was at all likeable.

I didn't like Anne at all, she was so manipulative and obviously clever but acted so foolishly. She took to the idea of murder as a solution at the slightest hint, and together with her childhood collection of dead things seemed to indicate she was a little unbalanced. If she just thought things through a little more she could have married then murdered Onions and secured his fortune lol Were women hanged for adultery in those times?

I didn't particularly like any of the characters which made it hard for me to enjoy the story. I did like the setting and it made me super appreciative to have not been born into Georgian society.

Sarah Ok, so I am giving up on this book - which I really hate to do, I usually stick it out to the end but I'm just not finding this book interesting and I'm about two thirds of the way through.

I agree with Sara that the characters aren't particularly likeable, but they're also just not very interesting and nothing much has really happened. There could have been a few less scenes of the father being disagreeable with Anne and the cook, and a few less secret meetings between Anne and Fub so they could cut to the chase a bit.

I liked the setting as well though and feel the premise of the book was promising!

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for giving your honest opinion! You are never obliged to like a book or keep going with it if you're not lovin' it. I know it is hard to not finish something you've started though so good job on sticking with it as long as you did! I hope you enjoy the books we read in the future a little more :)
