Some questions for this book's discussion on Sunday:

1. How does Sara become such a catalyst for change in Broken Wheel when she felt so powerless in her "normal life" in Sweden?

2. What does the contents Amy Harris's letters reveal about her, Sara, and their pen friend relationship?

3. What role does Amy Harris's letters play in the book?

4. Have you ever met a long-time pen pal? Did their letters reflect their "real life" personality or were they different?

5. Did this story inspire you to read any of the books Sara mentions?

Alex | 6 comments Bummed that I missed the book discussion because my family and I were at a farmers market finding piums and seconds of tomatoes.

Overall I agree that this book lacked good substance across the board. Sara was a hard character to identify with and even harder to root for in any of her circumstances. She seems so alien to even herself. The idea that she's watched like a zoo animal after reading for a few hours is just ridiculous.

How is Tom so weak that he falls for being pressured /tricked into getting married and then just goes along with the plan as if it's no big deal if a marriage just falls apart.

The immigration officer scare just seemed like a waste of a few chapters. Better if Sara had been deported and then if Tm would have traveled to Sweeden to profess his love.

Overall rating 1/10.

Oh yes, the weakness of Tom–we didn't really get into that aspect in the discussion, so I'm glad you brought it up. I love your analogy with a zoo animal!

Diana (secondhandrose) Just caught up on the book discussion. Agree with everything you said.
I love books, I love letters. I thought I'd love this book. It took me forever to get through it. I wasn't interested enough to keep reading. I just couldn't care for the characters or situations. Don't think the tempo of Broken Wheel will change much despite all that's happened. Yawn.
Have heard Terry Pratchett's good so looking forward to Going Postal.

Diana, I'm glad to see we weren't the only ones feeling this way about the book. Thankfully the Pratchett book should be a good one!
