On the last page, the reader discovers that Agatha Kent is Daniel's mother.
It is not surprising considering how worried she was about Daniel throughout the entire book, but where ( what page) does it explain anything about how his "mother" died and who his father is? We know Daniel's last name is Bookham but....

I don't remember exactly, but Agatha does allude to it when Celeste's pregnancy comes up. It kind of slips by, but is recalled when Daniel is dying and asks Hugh to tell her that he "always knew".

Daniel's birth father was Agatha's fiance, an army officer. In the book, the vicar/minister is marrying couples before the young men leave for war to avoid the situation Agatha found herself in--the couple anticipates their vows, then the man dies, leaving the woman unmarried and pregnant.
