Here is the Fall Master List as it currently stands. The list includes posts from the Completed Tasks thread thru Post 823 and pre-approvals thru November 21. This post will be updated regularly throughout the season as titles/authors are added to the ML.https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
I received this book through netgalley and would like to read it for 10.6(?) Ishmael Beah...as it takes place in Algeria, apparently. It does not appear to be on GR, and I am wondering how to/if I can claim it?
https://s2.netgalley.com/catalog/book...
It's on GR, Gabriel: The Angels DieIt doesn't say where it's set, but usually the mods will accept it if we say when posting, "set 90% in Algeria" or whatever the case is.
ETA: some of the other editions make the setting clear. I combined it with the other editions which are listed under the French title "Les anges meurent de nos blessures" - that's probably why you couldn't find it before.
I'm new to this group, and just wanted to double check that a book I started a day or two ago (before the fall challenge started) can be used for the fall challenge. I'm currently at 12% of the book read, and from what I read of the rules as long as it's less than 50% read before the start of the challenge I can use it? TIA!

For my poets book, I'm reading Selected Poetry by W.B. Yeats, which has a publication date of 1962. But the poems themselves were all previously published in 1939 or earlier. Which of the two dates would I use for the Oldies points?

I just joined this group upon a recommendation from a participant who is in another group with me. Is there anything I need to do to "sign up" or can I just start posting completed tasks?
Katie wrote: "I just joined this group upon a recommendation from a participant who is in another group with me. Is there anything I need to do to "sign up" or can I just start posting completed tasks?"Hi Katie, welcome!
No signing up, just start posting any as you finish tasks, and if you have any queries just ask in this or any of the task threads. Some tasks this season have pre-approvals, and books/authors that are already approved are on the lists you can find in each task thread.
Have fun! :)
Will Chinelo Okparanta count as non-Western? She was born in Nigeria and seems to still be a citizen of Nigeria despite living in the US for quite some time.
Katy wrote: "Will Chinelo Okparanta count as non-Western? She was born in Nigeria and seems to still be a citizen of Nigeria despite living in the US for quite some time."She appears to have dual Nigeria/USA citizenship and, as such, we have her designated as Western.

Thanks Elizabeth!
Would Patricio Pron count as non-Western? He was born in Argentina but I don't know about his citizenship.
Coralie wrote: "Would Patricio Pron count as non-Western? He was born in Argentina but I don't know about his citizenship."Yes. We assume citizenship/residence of birth unless we have knowledge/indications otherwise. And, as his GR profile is in Spanish, I'm assuming he's still in his home country. ;-)
Would Vered Ehsani get non-western points? According to her website, she was born in South Africa and has been living in Kenya for the past 15+ years: http://veredehsani.co.za/about-me
Sam wrote: "Would Vered Ehsani get non-western points? Despite her saying she was raised in Canada, I see no evidence that she ever acquired Canadian citizenship or gave up her South African citizenship.
Please remind me when you post, it will save me a few moments. ;-)
Sounds good! I wasn't sure because there's not a lot of info out there on her. I might not get around to reading her book, but I'll make myself a note to mention it was approved here if I do post it :)
If a book, like The Disappearance of Ember Crow, is shelved at BPL as "YA" but has no Lexile score, is it eligible for combo points? Thanks.
Deedee wrote: "If a book, like The Disappearance of Ember Crow, is shelved at BPL as "YA" but has no Lexile score, is it eligible for combo points? Thanks."Sorry, no. They will be entered as YA000, and interpreted as having a score lower than 800.
With collections of published works, do we use the date of one of the works or the date of the published compilation. The author was assassinated in 1972 but the compilation was published in 1998Men in the Sun and Other Palestinian Stories by Ghassan Kanafani

The book description that the last included material was published in 1969 and I have added that date to the GR book record.
Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "Rebekah wrote: "With collections of published works, do we use the date of one of the works or the date of the published compilation. The author was assassinated in 1972 but the compilation was pub..."Thank you
I was sure I'd seen this asked somewhere recently but I can't find it. Sorry if I'm asking something that's already been answered! If there are multiple editions of the same book at BPL and not all are shelved as YA, does it still get the YA assignment for the purpose of the challenge?
Sam wrote: "If there are multiple editions of the same book at BPL and not all are shelved as YA, does it still get the YA assignment for the purpose of the challenge? "Yes, just one shelving as Juv/YA/Assignment will have the Lexile rule come into play. (But don't forget that if it's on the Canon, no Lexile rule applies.)
What is Home as compared with RwS and that half thing? I'm rather confused at how these all fit together.
Karin wrote: "What is Home as compared with RwS and that half thing? I'm rather confused at how these all fit together."We're working on re-organizing the FAQ. No new rules, but some might be clarified.
RwS tasks are the 10- and 20-point tasks. The sub-challenge is the 15-numbered ones, this time Half and Half. The original organization was for the RwS tasks to be in the folder marked "home" and then another folder for the sub-challenge - both have the Challenge Name/Date included in the folder name. (Or I think they do, that is the intention.)
The "Home" folder includes the Tasks and Styles for the challenge. There will be a link in the Tasks thread to the "How to Play" thread for the 15-point sub-challenge.
There is a third folder for the RwS tasks, which are intended to be help threads, where you can ask questions about a specific task, and where you post if a task requires pre-approval of a title or author.

Okay, but under the home there are categories; are these, then, just a listing of the ones the R2S tasks?
Karin wrote: "Okay, but under the home there are categories; are these, then, just a listing of the ones the R2S tasks? ."Yes, if I understand you correctly. In the Challenge Home folder is the Task Overview, Styles Categories, Readerboard, Completed Tasks. Except for the Completed Tasks thread, all of these are closed to member comments.
The Task Overview is a complete listing of all of the tasks for the season. The Styles Categories thread tells you which styles are available to you for extra credit.
If you look at the Completed Tasks thread, one of the books that has been read by several members this season is Whose Body? (and I'm reading it now). This book can be claimed for 4 tasks: 10.6, 10.9, 10.10, and 20.5. Though you can claim a book for only one task, you get extra points with the Combo style when you can claim a book for more than one task. In this case, you would get 15 extra points on top of the task points for whichever task you claim it for. As it was published in 1933, it also qualifies for 10 Oldies points.
The Styles Categories post tells you how many extra credit points might be available. Whether you read a lot or a little, there may be rewards at the end of the season - naming a task, or selecting what we call a group reads. That information is also included in the Styles Categories post.
In the RwS Folder are individual threads for each task. Because the main threads are closed, you can't ask questions there. This separate folder, with separate threads for each task, is where you can ask questions, get suggestions, get pre-approval if the task requires, or maybe just squee. (See the posts in this thread! https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...)
A British friend egged me into getting The Twins at St Clare's and I'm curious, would it count for the challenge and style points? It looks like it should be YA but it's not listed at BPL, as far as I can see.
Kazen wrote: "A British friend egged me into getting The Twins at St Clare's and I'm curious, would it count for the challenge and style points? Sometimes books have a different titles in different English-speaking countries, and might turn out to be at BPL under another name, but in this case all the English language editions in GR have the same title, so you should be fine.
I used to love Enid Blyton's boarding school books when I was about 10 - and my nieces enjoyed them too, much more recently! There's another series too, Malory Towers.
Rosemary wrote: "It looks like the mods have missed your question, Kazen, but I'm sure the answer is yes, it would count for styles, if it's not at BPL. "Thank you, Rosemary! I did look at this and thought I'd answered it. Must have hurried off without clicking "post."
I know I asked earlier this season about the BPL YA assignment but I have a slightly different question now - I'm reading Flowers in the Attic, which isn't shelved as YA, but the combined edition of it plus Petals on the Wind IS shelved as YA. Does that disqualify Flowers in the Attic for style points?
Sam wrote: "I know I asked earlier this season about the BPL YA assignment but I have a slightly different question now - I'm reading Flowers in the Attic, which isn't shelved as YA, but the combined edition o..."BPL shelves multiple volumes of books studied in classrooms. There is no way for us to know for certain that it is only one book of the combined edition has been designated YA, and if so, which one. So, we just ignore YA designations of editions that represent multiple works.
