Goodreads Authors/Readers discussion

Do you think we should have a author website to link all our books, blog, social media channels? Or just having a blog or FB page for a book is enough? What is the best way to create a personal website?

I absolutely believe in author websites. I launched mine 3 weeks ago. From it I can mine data as to who my visitors are, what countries they are from, what stories they are interested in and how long they stay on the site. It also has a email sign up page that has netted me about 50 email addresses so far. This gives me a much better idea of who is interested than just a FB page. And if you are going to do an author website, it only makes sense to blog - and blog often.

I blog 2-3 times a day during the week and 1-2 a day on the weekends. Since I get a lot of European traffic, I try to blog at night to catch the Europeans as they wake up and then in morning to catch the US, Canada and South America traffic.

Blogging is also bringing in search engine traffic as well.

Thanks for your reply. I have a blog already and I'm writing a book at the moment so was wondering whether I should have my own website which can link to my blog. I myself love visiting author websites. Hopefully I'll launch mine soon!

I believe you need to have a website as a primary location for anything to do with you as an author and your writing. It gives you a place to base your information out of (including a blog if you like) which you can then share through other channels such as facebook. If a reader is really interested in finding out more about you and your work, it will be the place they will expect to find everything they want to know quickly. :)

I hope it's not cheesy just to link your Amazon author page to your author website (instead of a separate list of your books), but just having a domain name like www.turtlerocketbooks.com is a great way to make it easier for people to find your author page And then you can add other stuff like media etc.

Hello all, Aside from all the good things which having a web-site brings to an author - higher profile, opportunity to promote, build readership etc. - I would add enjoyment. I really enjoy writing my blog pieces ( my site is at http://www.thestorybazaar.com/ ). I write about London and Spain ( where ever I happen to be ) and what's going on in the world around me, plus pieces about books and my own writing. I find it very rewarding to write non-fiction, non-how-to as a change from writing historical fiction and have made new friends of folk who now contribute blogs to the site, or just post comments. So, I think there are lots of additional benefits, not just 'professional' ones. Julie

I think a personal website is very important. It helps potential readers see your work and it looks very professional as well.

I have just posted a book review on my website at www.tamaraaghajaffar.com of Slaying the Mermaid: Women and the Culture of Sacrifice by Stephanie Golden. It is a well-researched, well-documented study of why women are so willing to sacrifice themselves for others even if the sacrifice comes at the expense of their own health, happiness, and general well-being.
