Kelli and I are ecstatic to be starting this group with all you amazing people! I hope we can make this group really fun and we can all get to know each other here. What do you like to mostly use book groups for, here on Goodreads? Do you like read alongs, challenges, polls ...etc. Please don't be shy! I'd love to hear all your opinions!

message 2: by Nikita (new)

Nikita I do enjoy challenges, polls and games

message 3: by hannah renee. (new)

hannah renee. (faeriewhisky) | 9 comments I pretty much thought of it as a book club... we should all read books together as a group and have discussions on it afterward.

message 4: by Hannah (new)

Hannah grace | 7 comments I love challenges

I agree. I would love to do that. I've been invited to a few groups for group buddy-reads and discussions, but then nobody ends up discussing it! Or not everybody reads, which is fine. But, that's my favorite thing. Sharing a book together. That's why I write, anyway! To share the story! :D

Oh, and I do like polls! :D

message 6: by Fiona (new)

Fiona Titchenell | 2 comments Polls are fun. And gotta love a discussion when the book is right and people get into it.

Nikita Here are some challenges that I've enjoyed in the past if anyone likes them too for this group.

Series, A-Z, bingo, and color

Some I've seen but haven't played include states, countries, names, books based on movies and a check off list challenge

Kelly Brigid ♡ (anotherbookinthewall) | 848 comments Mod
Thank you all so much for responding to this thread! We will definitely be doing group read-alongs and discussions (hopefully two books a month?), and I hope to have quite a few polls and challenges. ^.^

@Nikita: I don't think I've heard of all those challenges. Could you explain how each of them works? :)

message 9: by Nikita (new)

Nikita Yes.

Series:
For 20xx a reader plans to read 3 book series and the goal of the challenge is to read all the books of those 3 book series before the end of the year.

series 1
title 1
title 2
title 3

series 2
title 1
title 2
title 3
title 4
title 5
title 6

series 3
title 1
title 2
title 3
title 4

A-Z:
It's very simple. Read books and filled in the alphabet as much as you can. Few I've seen actually complete this challenge due to the limited titles but it's fun to try.

Color:
We start with how many colors and fill in with the books we read based on the major color of the book cover.
blue - mockingjay
green - tiger's destiny
black - hunger games

Bingo:
Follows the same rules as bingo but to win across, down, etc, a person has to read the book example given in the box. Those examples can be found on any challenge bingo ideas or choice.

States and Country:
Read a book that is set in a state and country

Names:
read a book with the title that matches with you name
N - nevermore
I - iron king
K - kinslayer
I - iron daughter
T - talon
A - allegiant

Books based on movies:
Read books that became a film series
The Hunger Games
Divergent
Harry Potter

Check off list:
A check off list is vast. It can be of whatever one can think of.
a book based on a movie
a book with a flower on cover
a book set in 1800's
a book you never read before
a book you've read more than once
a book with a blue cover
a book set in high school
etc.

Does this answer your question?

Yes! Thank you. Those sounds really fun! I'd definitely like to arrange one or two of those for this group!

I agree but how are we going to choose the books?

That would be done in one of the polls we do. Some I've been in, we vote and narrow down by genre or theme and then by book based on number of votes. I remember one where there was a marathon of a book series for the upcoming release of the series final book.

Hannah grace | 7 comments okay thanks

message 14: by Sovanratana (new)

Sovanratana (booksandpugs) I love book pools, team challenges, and group reads :)

message 15: by Bibliogothica (new)

Bibliogothica I agree with most of suggestions that have been posted.

message 16: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 585 comments Ok here is the problem how do we decide when to start a discussion? Not everyone reads at the same rate. I am a slow reader I am lucky if I can get 30 pages read in an hour, by the time I finish the selected book everyone else will probably be two or three books beyond me.

message 17: by Bibliogothica (new)

Bibliogothica Well, we could make a discussion thread on the book we're reading, then whenever your finished the book you can join in on the discussion. Discussions don't have to be quick.

That's the beauty of being on an online group, you can go on whenever you're available.

message 18: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 585 comments The problem with that every time someone post on the thread it will show up on the feed update, it will be really hard to ignore reading a feed that comes in.

message 19: by Bibliogothica (new)

Bibliogothica Well, you could remain off Goodreads until you finished the book then you could look at everyone's opinions. Or if nobody minds, we could wait until everybody's finished the book then have the discussion.

We were planning on reading around two books a month (1.5-2 weeks per book) and then discussing the said book. If not everyone is done reading the book, then those who aren't could just wait until they're finished before joining in. And if receiving the updates for the discussion becomes a nuisance, you could always turn off post notifications for the discussion until you've finished the book. :)

you have good taste in books

message 26: by Nikita (new)

Nikita thank you

message 27: by Frog (new)

Frog | 9 comments I like long complicated discussions about storytelling.

Also, what about writing? Do any of you write stories, and is there any way to share them? I like seeing other people's work.

message 28: by Bibliogothica (new)

Bibliogothica I have so many ideas for stories, but it's really hard putting them down on a page.

I've written two stories, but they are very short.

message 29: by Nikita (new)

Nikita Oh yes, I enjoy writing and have many unfinished stories that I wish I had the muse to finish them. I get started and get as much as I can onto this story and the next thing I know I can't finish them. It is my dream to finish just one and see it published. Not to sell just to see it completed, you know.

message 30: by Frog (new)

Frog | 9 comments Yes, but you never really complete it on your own; there's always something you want to change or make better. (At least that's what happens to me).

Getting published is like winning the lottery though, there's a point where you just can't do anything. Sigh

message 31: by Nikita (new)

Nikita Thought of another suggestion. Playlists!

message 32: by Sovanratana (new)

Sovanratana (booksandpugs) I really want to write some stories. But my imagination is like, terrible. I can usually think of a good start but with A LOTTT of plot holes and nonsense and just complicated stuff. I've tried starting several different stories but I never get past chapter one lol because I always lose interest in them

Oh I have the same problem. It's hard to keep going with a story once you hit a wall or where does the character/story go from here. It's a matter of finding inspiration or that muse. Or when you get that spark of imagination, find a way to add that to one of the stories that you began and see if it can fit into that one. Use dreams to. And you can never go wrong with research at the library to make the stories more real or possible. Find inspiration from songs, paintings and emotions from what you feel when you see the paintings and hear or even see when you listen to the songs. Music is big with my inspiration and I create a lot of scenes based on what my head can pull up.

message 34: by Sovanratana (new)

Sovanratana (booksandpugs) @Nikita that's really helpful! Thank you! I will be sure to try your suggestions out.

Try writing an outline of the story you want to write. List all characters and give a small synopsis for each and how they relate to the other characters in the story. The outline will be your guide for the story and having the list of characters will help keep the straight in the story.

message 37: by Nikita (last edited Oct 05, 2016 02:52PM) (new)

Nikita that's a good method

message 38: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 585 comments A lot of authors use that method I learned it in a creative writing class I took. I don't use it myself as I only write small pieces not more then a page or two.

Hi Mr Brooks,

I'm a pretty slow reader too. One way I combat it in a situation like discussion groups is with audiobooks. But do not let it over worry you, there are always going to be some of us that lag behind and have to have a latent discussion about materials already covered by an earlier group.

I was just looking back at some of these and wow! So many great suggestions! I'll definitely try to implement a lot of these into the group!
