30.5 Sheila/Kathy G's Task: In Pursuit of a Good Book

This is a 2 book task. Choose 2 different options and read a book for each.

Option 1: Entertainment- Read a book by an author whose first and last name initials are found in the word "ENTERTAINMENT. Middle initials may be ignored. Only letters found in the word twice may be used twice.

Option 2: Geography- Read a book that takes place in a city, state, or country that has the letter "G" in the place name. The place name must be identified on the main book page in the title, book description, or setting metadata.
Required: Identify the place name

Option 3: History- Read a book set during WWI or WWII- the eras from 1914-1918 or 1939-1945. The setting must be evident on the main book page from the title, book description, metadata or genre list.

Option 4: Art & Literature- Read a non-fiction book about a person who is in the music, television or movie industry. It must be clear from the book description that this person works in one of those industries.

Option 5: Science & Nature- Read a book with at least one tree on the cover
Required - Post the Cover

Option 6: Sports & Leisure- Read a book that you would consider a "good summer read." Optional- Give us one sentence why you consider it a summer read.

Required Indicate the options

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments Absolutely verified BC, looks like an interesting book

message 8: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (_lindsey_) | 498 comments Is iWant: My Journey from Addiction and Overconsumption to a Simpler, Honest Life OK for option 4? It does not mention in the description that the author is a TV personality, but this book is her autobiography, and in the author's biography box, it mentions all her TV credits.

message 9: by Kathy G. (new)

Kathy G. | 1931 comments Lindsey- that is acceptable. I looked on her
site. Just be sure to show it was approved here
when you post.

:-)

Val | 435 comments For Option 4: Does the person in showbiz have to be alive or can it be anyone who has ever been in the industry?

message 12: by Kathy G. (new)

Kathy G. | 1931 comments Ever been is fine!
:-)
Like Hitchcock, or anyone.

The branches are bare, but they surround the banks of the creek/river behind the bridge.

Claire (proud-mum) | 1086 comments 1: Cents And Sensibility by Maggie Alderson (Letters - M, A)

2: Wedding Night by Sophie Kinsella - takes place in Greece.

I love Kinsella. She cracks me up!!!

Is this OK? At Mrs Lippincote's - WWII appears at the bottom of the list for the genres shelved.

Elizabeth (ebpnd17) | 838 comments Hello! I was wondering if there was enough of a branch for this to pass as a tree on the cover:
Unearthly (Unearthly, #1) by Cynthia Hand

Thank you!!!

message 25: by Kathy G. (new)

Kathy G. | 1931 comments Yes, those look like trees in the background
to me.

message 26: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa | 72 comments the description for The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay states one of the main characters smuggled himself out of Nazi-invaded Prague. Is that acceptable for the history option (WWII)?

message 27: by Kathy G. (new)

Kathy G. | 1931 comments Yes, that is acceptable (and sounds good too).
I looked on Amazon and it is clear.

Just to let you know this book can't be used for 30 point tasks as it has sequential art as a genre.

This would really warrant an exception in my opinion because the main characters are comics writers, but it's a full length Pulitzer Prize winning novel. It's one of my all time favorite books and I'm just chiming in because I love the book!

Peebee | 481 comments Does option 4 have to be about a single person or can it be about a band, for example? The one I was thinking of is This Must Be the Place, about the Talking Heads.

I'm asking Sandy about this. I am not sure.
Thanks

This will work okay. :-)

Coralie is correct. Books with the genre 'sequential art' may only be used for 5-15 point tasks. We know books like Kavalier & Clay get caught in Goodreads' imperfect genre system, but it is the system we are using.

message 37: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 2080 comments I apologize if I sounded snarky about the genres. I understand how difficult things could get if you started making exceptions. Michael Chabon would fit the initials in ice cream for 10.1 I Scream, You Scream, so you could use it there if you wanted, Alyssa.

Sorry Alyssa-
Could you move your book to the lower tasks?
Thanks-
Kathy

message 39: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments Gosh, I never knew what sequential art meant. Is it essentially comic book format? You learn something new every day.

Thanks dlmrose for weighing in on this question

message 40: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa | 72 comments ughhhhhh that's so frustrating! There are no pictures in this book AND it's over 600 pages. I agree wholeheartedly with Karen- thanks :)

message 41: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments Sorry Alyssa. Hopefully you can use it on one of the lower point tasks.

message 42: by Cindie (new)

Cindie | 1845 comments How is this for option 5: Angel with Two Faces (Josephine Tey, #2) by Nicola Upson ? There is a tree next to the person staring at the river.

And just to make sure for option 6: My Iran: Memories, Mysteries and Myths?

message 43: by Kathy G. (new)

Kathy G. | 1931 comments It took me a minute, but I'll accept those
trees.

Option 6 is "your choice" so that works.

We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler for option 5

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments They look good to me Amy. Briar Rose sounds really interesting.
