This topic is open for discussion of Shattered by Kevin Hearne. Be prepared for SPOILERS.

Synopsis:

Acclaimed author Kevin Hearne makes his hardcover debut with the new novel in his epic urban fantasy series starring the unforgettable Atticus O’Sullivan.

For nearly two thousand years, there was only one Druid left walking the Earth—Atticus O’Sullivan, the Iron Druid, whose sharp wit and sharp sword kept him alive while pursued by a pantheon of hostile deities. Now he’s got company.

Atticus’s apprentice Granuaile is at last a full Druid herself. What’s more, Atticus has defrosted an archdruid long ago frozen in time, a father figure (of sorts) who now goes by the modern equivalent of his old Irish name: Owen Kennedy.

And Owen has some catching up to do.

Atticus takes pleasure in the role reversal, as the student is now the teacher. Between busting Atticus’s chops and trying to fathom a cell phone, Owen must also learn English. For Atticus, the jury’s still out on whether the wily old coot will be an asset in the epic battle with Norse god Loki—or merely a pain in the arse.

But Atticus isn’t the only one with daddy issues. Granuaile faces a great challenge: to exorcise a sorcerer’s spirit that is possessing her father in India. Even with the help of the witch Laksha, Granuaile may be facing a crushing defeat.

As the trio of Druids deals with pestilence-spreading demons, bacon-loving yeti, fierce flying foxes, and frenzied Fae, they’re hoping that this time . . . three’s a charm.

Sara | 860 comments Thoughts on Chapters 1 - 7 -

Warning, Spoilers Ahead...

I enjoyed the "story so far" recap - this series has a lot of plot threads that are continued in later books so it was a nice re-fresher.

I'm really enjoying Owen. Atticus can get a bit cocky so it will good for him to have someone who will put him in his place. I did like Owen's advice that Atticus be a "sneaky nut-stomper". Owen's bonding with Sam's pack was fun. I can't imagine the sheer amount of culture shock Owen is going through - from BC to the 21st Century?! And Captain America thought he had it rough when he woke up!

Rhakshakas (along with Loki) seem to be the bad guys of choice in urban fantasy in the past decade - Kate Daniels and the Dresden Files have also used them as bad guys.

We are slowly and surely meeting every pantheon in existence.

The story behind the creation of the yetis and the wendigos was interesting.

I completely forgot that we never did find out who was behind the manticore owner's murder.

Loki is assembling an all-star bad buy team. Any guesses on the roster? Hel is a certainty. I would guess it will be Eris from the Olympian pantheon. She is the goddess of discord after all.

I re-read the first three books last month and, if I remember correctly, Rebecca Dune is a former employee of Atticus and the current owner of the Third Eye bookstore.

Lisarenee | 2046 comments ***Thoughts on Chapters 1 - 7

I thought the series breakdown was helpful to remember everything. Kind of unusually done, but it did what it was meant to.

Loving the relationship between Oberon and Granuaile's Irish Wolf Hound.

Sara said, "I re-read the first three books last month and, if I remember correctly, Rebecca Dune is a former employee of Atticus and the current owner of the Third Eye bookstore."

I bet your right. I was drawing a blank.

Interesting that Atticus doesn't trust Laksha. Is this foreshadowing of something to come?

Doesn't it just figure it would be Granuaile's dad who falls victim to possession?

Owen is fun and I love how Atticus has to explain everything to him especially about woman. I can't fanthom a 2,000 year rip van winkle incident. I like how Owen told Atticus part of what was going on with him being hunted had to do with him not listening to what he'd been taught.

I too thought of the Kate Daniels series when it came to the Rhakshakas.

Loki is definitely the 'it' man of bad guys at the moment.

I also enjoyed the Wendigo and Yeti creation story. I wonder if they'll become important in this story?

Warning, Spoilers Ahead...

The yetis were adorable. I can understand being bored out of their mind though. Perhaps their father should visit more than once a century? At least they have a hockey rink now!

Hal! We can never have enough Hal. I was giggling at Owen's sheer delight in telling humiliating Atticus stories to anyone who's willing to listen. Atticus should live in fear of the day that Owen meets Grannuaile.

Owen and Greta are a cute couple.

Durga has entered the fray and were about to have a royal rumble.

We still don't know any details of Rebecca's connection to the pantheons.

Sara | 860 comments Thoughts on chapters 13 - 15 _ Poor Grannuaile - she lost her father and had to say goodbye to her mom. BRIGID has out-maneuvered Atticus again! Hal isn't happy with Leifs shenanigans!

Lisarenee | 2046 comments Comments and Spoilers for 8 - 17

I like Owen and his attempt to learn about modern conveniences and the English language. So much has changed.

I like how the chapters change pictures between a hound, horse, and bear depending on whose point of view is being given although I think the horse should have been a jaguar for Granuaile.

I like Owen and Greta. I wonder how old Greta is?

The meeting between Granuaile and her mom was sad. Her loss of her father was painful. I kept thinking she should call Atticus. I was surprised she didn't know he had his tattoo fixed already.

Will Laksha be upset to be in a body that can't communicate verbally or will she realize Granuaile had the handicap of being unable to read the chart?

Love the ice rink. I hope we see more of the Yeti.

I'm surprised there's no way to tie the weapon the Yeti gave Granuaile to her. I'd be afraid of someone taking it in battle.

Interesting little bit about Sherlock.

I wonder what Atticus will think of Owen telling all these tales about him?

"You know nothing, Jon Snow" I wish Granuaile had her camera.

Fuliteach "blood thirsty" seems an appropriate name for the knife of a Fierce Druid.

You were right, Sara, about Rebecca.

FYI, A first edition of "Leaves of Grass," printed for the author, recently sold for $305,000. That was more than twice Christie's estimate of $100,000 to $150,000, and it marked a world auction record for Whitman.

Jesus once again coming into play.

Love the bath time stories/discussions.

Walrus. I love it.

Red kite:
red kite bird photo: Kite Lalbagh-3.jpg

I'm now curious about Kodiak.

The witches will come into play again. Yay!

Interesting Rebecca Dane prayed for Atticus and funny she now prays to all the Gods she hears of.

Why didn't Owen tell Atticus about the real reason the Morrigan put him on the Time Island? I'm not sure what to think of him not telling.

Sara | 860 comments I loved the Jon Snow reference. Poor Jon Snow is never allowed to know anything!

Owen is that one relative that always tells the most embarrassing stories about you to everyone they meet. I would like to hear the details of the goat story myself.

Atticus should consider himself lucky that Rebecca limited her prayers to a small number of gods - imagine the number she could have included!

I think it's been a few books since Oberon's been told a story - it used to happen once a book.

Sara | 860 comments Thoughts on Chapters 15 - 20

Perun and Jesus are always fun when they visit.

I did laugh at the idea of Lucifer "sulking" and sitting this one out (which is a good thing).

I'm glad it's only Fand, and not Manannan, who is a bad guy.

"Every time I think I've solved a problem with violence, more problems grow in their place, like a hydra." - Hail Hydra!

Lisarenee | 2046 comments Thoughts on Chapter 18 - end

"Whoever said that dead men tell no tales never spent Samhain with Druids."I thought it interesting that as long as a God has followers they can come back. Not a good thing for Atticus where Thor is concerned.

"perfection of life, like the perfection of sausage, is achieved in its flavor." lol I love Oberon and his love of sausage.

I'm not sure that Atticus should have said anything to keep Brighid from killing Fand. I hope this doesn't come back to bite him.

What will Loki's mark on Granuaile mean? I liked Atticus' statement that as far as he was concerned he and Granuaile were as good as married.

Interesting that it looks like all three druids will live together. I wonder how difficult it will be for Owen to recruit new druids?

Will Atticus be able to access his money?

What new threat will his latest enemy pose?

What will happen with the police? Could Atticus pose as his own son? How many years since he lived in Tempe?

What will the witches do and how will Atticus fulfill his obligation?

How will the Svartálfar come into play? What did the Morgan exactly see?

I may add more tomorrow. I can't find my kindle at the moment.

Sara | 860 comments Finished!

Another enjoyable installment. I did like that the book seemed to have some forward momentum in terms of plot development. The last three/four installments were fun but we didn't seem to go anywhere - Loki makes a hi/bye appearance and Atticus and Granuaille run around in circles.

I did like Loki's appearances. I'm very glad he was faking the crazy/stutter aspect - it was funny but not very fear-inspiring.

I'm positive that Atticus preventing Brighid from killing Fand will bite him in the butt. He will also be in a severe amount of trouble if Thor decides to resurface.

Hasn't it been around 12 - 15 years since he faked his death? Atticus is supposed to look like a college kid so he may be able to pass as his own son?
