We had a good time guessing the November 2016 selection so I thought I would add this new thread to do this every month. After I pick a book, I will set up the release announcement event with a hint and give everyone a chance to guess it (should be about 5 days before the announcement.

Additional hints may be given - may the best Book-a-Book clubber win! I will keep a tally of correct guessers for bragging rights

Standings so far (last updated 8/1/2022)

Richard: 13.5
Kandice: 13.5
Josen: 8.5
Vicki: 7.5
Pedro: 4
Myra: 3
Michelle: 3
Ella: 3
Annie 2
Heather: 1
Josefine: 1

Note: 0.5 indicates a tie. Seems to be happening more often than you would think!

Josen (josens) | 696 comments Why do I have a feeling I'm not gonna' be any good at this? Oh, maybe because I haven't been right so far. Lol!! That's too funny too because after Richard guessed the last one I thought about asking you if you were going to keep a tally. :)

First Hint for the December 2016 Book-a-Book Club Selection:

The book was a nominee in the first round of the Goodreads' Choice Awards this year.

message 4: by Josen (new)

Josen (josens) | 696 comments First round?? Oh so you strategically waited until the first round was done so we can't cheat! Lol! And I only glanced at the nominees. I wasn't going to vote until it got closer to the end. Lol! Sooooo.............are you gonna' give us the genre?

message 5: by Richard (new)

Richard (rsquaredreads) | 178 comments Man, there are so many categories to choose from with this hint. I'm going to have wait for the next hint.

message 6: by Matthew (new)

Matthew (funkygman007) | 2945 comments Mod
Another hint: It was not in the romance or kids picture book categories

Oooooh! Another great guess . . . and I did honestly think about this one. But, it seemed a bit too long a couple of months after Boy's Life.

Maybe eventually . . . but that might be too revealing at this point. It is still the first day of guessing! :)

message 12: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (artemitch) I don't have a lot of guesses. One of them is All the Ugly and Wonderful Things..

Welcome Michelle - glad to have you in the group!

That is another great guess . . . and it is one I am looking at to read one day . . . but it is not the December pick.

Well, I'm going to wait on more clues, then!

It's funny you should ask - because I was just coming here to post that it did make the second round. Very good Sherlock Josen!

Vicki Willis I got it... pretty sure it is...
The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead The Underground Railroad

I am loving all the guesses - and they are great! But, alas, not the right one.

Might be time for another clue . . . let me think . . .

message 22: by Matthew (new)

Matthew (funkygman007) | 2945 comments Mod
Next clue: The book is not Non-Fiction - I will probably never follow one non-fiction with another.

Josen (josens) | 696 comments Myra wrote: "Here's my second guess: Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi"

Aah I was gonna' pick that one :) So since that one's taken, I'll go with All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders

More great guesses - and recent additions to my TBR - but still not the correct pick.

Next hint: This is not a recent release - it has been out for most of the year. In fact, I have had it on hold for about 6 months.

And we have a winner! Congratulations Myra! I will be adding you to the tally in message number 1. Great work!

Great round of guessing - I am kind of sad it is over. But, we will be back with more guessing the second week of December.

Josen (josens) | 696 comments Matthew wrote: "I hope you got a good deal, Josen!"

Yeah it wasn't bad. I don't buy books as much as I used to (not that I don't want to because I'd love my own library) because I'm sure like many, if we bought all the books we wanted we'd be flat broke. Lol! But from the groups I'm in on GR this is the only one where I'll buy the book if I can't get from the library. I've been happy with all the book choices so far so I don't mind. :)

Yay! Glad to hear! But, that is a lot of pressure for future picks! ;)

message 35: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 944 comments I've bought a couple for this group because Matthew is really good at picking titles, but I can't buy them all. I love reading along with others, so between my face to face book and other groups, I have to choose what to buy and usually it's something I was already thinking of reading, because like Josen said, if I bought them all I'd be broke! A happy reader, but broke. ;-)

Thanks! I am glad people are happy with my picks! :)

I understand the buying issue. In general, I try to not pick things that are too new to avoid making it too difficult to get them. In the case of this month's, I kinda went a little newer than usual.

Kandice - were you able to find a copy of this one?

message 37: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 944 comments I haven't yet, and I checked Nook, but it's still $13.99 there. I have the Kindle app so I'll check that too, I just prefer Nook.

I have my library book club tonight, so was going to look at the library then.

BTW, my daughter is reading my copy of Vurt that I purchased for this group! She loves it. She's also 18, which is something we all said could change how you feel about the book. (age)

Good luck finding it! :) I am going audio because I was able to get an audio copy from the library without too much trouble.

That is very cool about Vurt - interesting to hear that since I was about 23 when I first read it and I remember us talking about age being an issue when we discussed it. I hope she continues to enjoy - I am interested in hearing her overall impressions.

Kandice | 944 comments She wants to be an editor so reads very differently than I do. I'm always amazed at what she likes and what she doesn't and it usually comes down to writing style for her. She leaves for college next year and I am hoping to read everything she does while she is there. We'll see how that goes!

Oh an editor that's very cool! I always wonder what editors look for in books because it's all subjective isn't it? Will she be staying in state for college? If you try to read everything she does you will definitely be very busy. :)

I couldn't tell - seemed relevant to me! :) Unless you are saying you posted this elsewhere and meant to post it here!

Kandice | 944 comments We live in Southern CA and she absolutely will not be staying here! She's applied to schools in New York, Colorado and Massachusetts. She applied to two in Texas as back ups because that's where her best friend is going, but she doesn't really want to go there.

I think she'll end up at Pratt. She did a big college tour this summer and she and I are going on a 10 day trip in February to look at her whittled down list together. I am so excited for her! I didn't go to college, so I am living vicariously.

Josen (josens) | 696 comments That's right I thought you were in my neck of the woods. I'm southern Cali also. :) How exciting for her! Same with me, everything my daughter did in school I was so excited for her because I didn't go away to college either. Well your 10 days are going to be a whirlwind that's for sure.

message 47: by Matthew (new)

Matthew (funkygman007) | 2945 comments Mod
First Hint: We have not read a book from this genre in a long time!

message 48: by Matthew (new)

Matthew (funkygman007) | 2945 comments Mod
Myra - very good guess. And, the spirit is right! But, we read True Crime last February - and the next hint is that it has been longer than that since we read something from this genre.

message 49: by Matthew (new)

Matthew (funkygman007) | 2945 comments Mod
Another hint . . . don't open your eyes . . .

message 50: by Josen (new)

Josen (josens) | 696 comments Are you referring to Bird Box? You know I can't believe we read that LAST December! Geez time flies! So IF that's what you're referring to is the genre a thriller?.......would that be considered horror?
