Diane | 5 comments Mei thank you for starting the group ~ hopefully get more people in Taiwan to participate in the good reads community ( ^ ^ ).

Back to me, my name is Diane, I read a bit of everything that is well written or entertaining. My book list is 95% fiction, heavy on fan fiction, romance and science fiction. I also read a lot of on-line works 網路小說, that's not listed on goodreads.

I've started to putting some of the Chinese books on goodreads, but so few Taiwanese/Chinese user use this site, my effort seems pretty useless. But, hey someone's got to start some where right?

message 2: by Amy (new)

Amy Chichi Hsiao (amylord) | 8 comments Hmm it has something to do with lack of Chinese Interface I think.

message 3: by Diane (new)

Diane | 5 comments I think 博客來 is already linked with Amazon, if they could only import the Chinese books from the site.

Dino Hsu (dinohsu1019) | 10 comments Good day,

My name is Dino, I am an IT project manager, and I love reading, and learning in general. I didn't learn too much before I was 40 years ago, but I am gaining momentum now. Since I am already middle aged, so it's important to also learn "how to learn effectively". It's very nice to meet you and possibly make friends with you.

Dino

Hi everybody! My name is Theodoor. I am Dutch but live in Taichung now for about 8 years. As I love to read, I joined Goodreads. Right now, I am reading "After the Ecstacy, the Laundry", by Jack Kornfield. I am only halfway, but I think it's great already. Kornfield really describes the daily troubles of a spiritual life very well.

message 6: by Dino (new)

Dino Hsu (dinohsu1019) | 10 comments Hi Theodoor,

I picked up that book from City library (Chinese translation), but I didn't finish it, I guess enlightenment is not too much an interest in me, but I am curious about origins of human beings as well as the universe, on the other hand.

Hopefully, readers in Taiwan can meet sometime.

message 7: by Yuan-Ming (new)

Yuan-Ming (ymc47) | 12 comments Hey everyone!

Yay, another Jack Kornfield reader here--I read a Path With Heart, a book filled with a lot of wisdom.

I'm currently tackling Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces--on the universality of human myths, it's also very intriguing.

Just thought I would share one of the many 2015 list of "best books" with you guys--I always liked the NPR version since you can filter it with many different categories, check it out:
http://apps.npr.org/best-books-2015/

I second Dino's idea of a group meet in person someday!

Cheers,
YM

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow, cool! Yes, I also think "A Path with Heart" is one of Kornfield's best.
Talking about the history of man and the universality of myths, one of the books on my shelf to read soon, is Graham Hancock's "Magicians of the Gods". Hancock has made it his life's mission to defy the fixed thought of history and archaeology by looking for evidence in myths and ancient monuments, of a lost human civilisation. Great stuff!
"The Hero with a Thousand Faces" is indeed one of the classics. Very inspiring.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, I'm Chuan. (pinyin as "Quan"), I'm an active user here I guess. was using another online bookshelf called aNobii but then jumped to goodreads. The platform is more simple, the visual effects and the framework looks more comfortable to me.

Dino Hsu (dinohsu1019) | 10 comments I don't believe there are so few readers in Taiwan, can we try to unite people from multiple groups, such as:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/FiveC...

message 12: by Yuan-Ming (new)

Yuan-Ming (ymc47) | 12 comments Hi Chuan,
welcome to the group!
What's everyone reading these days? I just picked up A Strangeness in my mind by Orhan Pamuk

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello all,
I'm obsessed with reading. Father. Greek-Canadian. Been her for 5+ years so far. Live up near Danshui.

I've read 24 of 50 books this year in my reading challenge! I read on my Kindle and buy books when I can but you guys know how difficult it is to buy cheap books here.

I'm very interested in history books and historical fiction.

If you're interested in trading or buying books I've finished reading, message me.

NOTE: I just started reading A Strangeness in My Mind too. All the books on this years Man Booker International Shortlist are great this year. I've already read The Four Books, The Vegetarian, and A General Theory of Oblivion.

Dino Hsu (dinohsu1019) | 10 comments There was a meetup group "Taipei Business Book Club", but unfortunately it's no longer working. Do you know any other English book club out there? Thanks.

Kevin Hozak (khozak) | 4 comments Hi Everyone,

I'm an American living in Taichung. Married with 2 daughters, ages 10 and 8. We've been here for almost 5 years.

I'm a computer programmer and work from home. I mostly read books using the Kindle app on my Android tablet. Also enjoy listening to audiobooks and podcasts.

Regards,
Kevin

message 16: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 6 comments Greetings all! Can't believe it took me this long to find this group! I'm ethnically Taiwanese but was born and raised in Venezuela and have travelled and moved around quite a bit (so don't ask me where I'm from if you ever meet me in person; I strongly dislike that question hahaha).

I'm based in Taipei and have been in Taiwan since 2011. Have done lots, especially in the media and environmental sectors. I recently left an international marketing and branding firm, where I worked as a strategist. Have always loved reading but struggled to find time for it. Now that I'm getting ready for B-school, I've been reading more and would love to share some good reads with everyone sometime!

Cheers,
S

message 22: by Yuan-Ming (new)

Yuan-Ming (ymc47) | 12 comments @Daniel, I haven't read snow, and would be happy to do a trade!

Also support the idea of meeting up at a cafe, sounds like fun :-)

message 23: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 6 comments Not much of a Twitter user I'm afraid, Elias :P Don't think it's commonly used here.

I'm definitely up for meeting up and trading books :) Let's organise something!

message 36: by Sora (last edited Apr 30, 2017 09:10AM) (new)

Sora (sulaya) | 2 comments Hello everyone!!!! I just found this group today :) and decided to join right away.
My names is Soraya but I do prefer people call me Sora (it sounds like sky in japanese).

I was active in Hsinchu Book Club (former NCTU Book Club), you can join if you like https://www.facebook.com/groups/nctu....
but I feel more confortable in goodreads.

I am from Nicaragua, an Information Engineering student (will graduate on June), living in Tainan.. Currently I am reading "The Master Switch: The Rise and Fall of Information Empires" by Tim Wu and 4 more books. I got bored if I read only one book :), not sure if I will complete my challenge, but I enjoy the readings. I've got a kindle this year and that helped me a lot to increase the numbers of book to read :D, however I do like to buy physical books from the second hand bookstore sometimes or just go there to take a look :P

What else? I like to code, coffee, popcorn, the countryside of Taiwan, and mandarin.

I have no joined any book club in Tainan yet (I even do not know if it exists). Maybe in the future if you have time we can some set up meetings out of Taipei.

Nice to meet you!

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

hi Sora!

WELCOME

check our Line group for when you're in Taipei next!

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

we're actually meeting up next Saturday...

i've seen it a few times in this group, but what does "i like to code" even mean?

fill me in!

message 38: by Sora (new)

Sora (sulaya) | 2 comments Hahhaa @Daniel thanks! Nice to meet you, to code means "programming" I am a programmer.

message 39: by Winnie (new)

Winnie Sheng | 2 comments Hello, everyone!!! My name is Winnie.I love reading and I'm so happy to join a group of book-lovers like me!!! I'm from Taipei and is only thirteen, so I think I'm kind of the youngest here!? I love fantasy stories-Harry Potter and Percy Jackson-they are so so so awesome! And I also love survival stories. I read Lord of the Flies and Hatchet but I could say that they are really not so good after reading The Hunger Games. Besides those books, I enjoy reading Jin Yong's Martial arts novels, like all the others in my class~
Anyway, nice to meet all of you!!!

message 40: by Mel (new)

Mel | 1 comments Woah hello! There's a group here? This is awesome, and I'll be checking out the Line group real soon. :) I'm here because whilst I have a bookshelf of actual books from my time growing up, my days are spent reading online now since Page One has closed down in Taipei 101, I have no good source of English books anymore. :( Not to mention that it's actually dreadfully hard to buy cheap English books in Taiwan. Once I've seen the bargain rack in Barnes & Noble... I can't cough up the full prices anymore. ><

So these days, I read on http://volarenovels.com and I'm a huge wuxia fan like Winnie above! I'd love to chat. :D

hi Winnie!

wow you've read so much!!
i only read Spider-Man comics when i was 13yo... actually, i had tried reading the Hobbit in the school library, but it didn't work for me... read it eventually, though...

have you checked out https://www.pottermore.com/ ??
there's a test to see which Hogwart's House you belong to... and some other things... interesting if you're into Harry Potter...

hi Mel,

yeah, come and check out the Line group... we just chill, chat, and maybe trade a few books...

do you listen to audiobooks?

message 43: by Winnie (last edited Jul 06, 2017 08:23AM) (new)

Winnie Sheng | 2 comments Thanks, Daniel!!!
I knew Pottermore since I started to read Harry Potter...
But you know, it somehow changed into another version like a year ago, I think the old one is better. You could have your own unique wand, practice many kinds of charms you had seen in the book, and make potions with some magical stuff. Pottermore was much cooler before :(
--Though you got to discover more about the story now!
Do you join Pottermore too?
You know what! I'm in Gryffindor and I got a "rat" for my Patronus(which made me kind of dumb...=_=)

haha... i'm a Gryffindor too... but my patronus is a Newfoundland... a big dog... oh well...

Ray (rayhecht) | 2 comments Hi, I'm Ray and I've just moved to Taiwan. I'm from America and among my favorite genres/mediums such as science fiction and comics I also like literary fiction about China and Asia. I enjoy reading the works of Haruki Murakami, Mo Yan, and Liu Cixin (all translated of course).

Anyone recommend any Taiwanese authors?

I also dabble in writing by the way but I hope it's not rude to overpromote myself... Well if curious feel free to check out my blog site for some of my writings and reviews:
