SciFi and Fantasy Book Club discussion

Hi I remember loving a book that was set in some sort of Viking-like environment.

The hero grew up with a kind-of villain and they were like brothers, with the hero looking out for his unpopular friend.


That's all I can think of, anyone know which book I'm talking about? It must be at least from pre-2010, maybe even from a decade before that.

It's not fantasy (even though I feel like it reads like a lot of fantasies) but this sounds like The Last Kingdom by Bernard CornwellThe Last Kingdom

It could also be The Story of Burnt Njal by George Webbe Dasent

I think it was part of a fantasy series. I might be confusing it with a Juliet Marillier series but I re-read that and it wasn't an exact match for my (perhaps fickle) memory
