Monica Davis I've discovered some very good Fantasy genre authors through reading one of their short stories, (Joe Abercrombie, Midori Snyder). It's a great way to see if a reader resonates with an author's style before making a commitment to an entire book or series. Anyone interested in discussing short stories?

In November 2014 the group selected and read Rogues and Unfettered. Since then I've read a few of the Del Rey Samplers available free in Kindle format from Amazon (2014 and 2015). If anyone can suggest a book of short stories or a standalone short story, please add to the list. Were you familiar with the author before you read the short or did you discover a new author from reading the short?

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 1494 comments I've never been able to finish short story anthologies, for whatever reason. But occasionally I'll read a particular author's short story.
For some reason science fiction short stories catch me more often. No good here, of course.

I still have Unfettered to finish.

That's why I enjoy them so much. I don't usually read the entire collection either, but by skipping around I usually find one or two good authors that lead me into longer works.

I read unfettered and found a few authors that I enjoyed. Not sure I can remember who now...

Okay, I went looking. These are the authors that I hadn't read but liked a lot.
Peter Orullion
Peter Brett
Jacqueline Carey
Todd Lockwood
Kevin Hearne

Funny as I'm currently reading Lockwood, excellent too. The Summer Dragon

Monica Davis Kevin Hearne is the only one from your list that I can remember reading. I'm half way through his "Iron Druid Chronicles", and enjoyed every one of those books. Now I have more authors to check out...thanks, Helen.

Carey wrote Kushiel's Dart which I'm told had loads of sex, I'm not into reading about sex so I haven't tried her.

Good to know. That wouldn't interest me either.

I've read a couple of books of short stories recently: Elementary: All-New Tales of the Elemental Masters and Elemental Magic: All-New Tales of the Elemental Masters. I really enjoyed these stories. Some were really good and some were just ok but interesting. Also, Elemental Magic was first and some of the stories continued in Elementary.

Monica Davis Thanks, Tnkw01. Those both look good. I've added them to my reading list.
