Hi everyone, I thought that it might make it easier to use the "challenge feature" for the 2017 Bingo. After all the discussion about the challenges for next year, I was excited to post the new card (although still need to figure out how to copy it larger here).

I was thinking we should make it simpler to track as it is all about expanding our own horizons and we can have discussion below without all the detailed tracking but I am certainly open to suggestions if you don't feel the challenge feature will work.

It looks good. I wasn't sure about audiobooks since I don't really like them but then thought it might be a good time to try to increase my 'reading' in French.

@Susan If you want I can make up a printable card tonight similar to the one from the previous group.

I'm already trying to research what books were published in the year of my birth (apparently a guide for draft dodgers wanting to escape to Canada is one option - ha!).

LOL - I had this same square for a summer read at the library and it was 1 of 2 squares i did not complete (a tight timeline likley not meant to finish the card but i was a keener). For me (1972) I would like to read The Manticore. with all the excitement around the challenges, I was excited to share the Bingo

Erm... isn't N3 supposed to be the Bingo card Free square?

Lol - perhaps but adding a favourite read makes it fun!!

If people have trouble finding a book published the year they were born that they want to read perhaps it could be changed to the decade? That's an option in another bingo challenge I'm doing.

@Allison - If you google search "books published in..." a goodreads list comes up.

Wow! Fantastic! Thank you @Susan! The BINGO challenge was my fave this year, probably because of its flexibility and the duration. This is fantastic.

Were you thinking that ALL books would be Canadian, or is there leeway where applicable?

Ha! The Diviners was published in my year! 1974.

@Allison - thanks! I was thinking that all Canadian would be preferable but will leave that up to individuals to choose books that are meaningful to them. I am hoping that we can have some great suggestions and discussions yet be flexible enough that there is not too much pressure and fun for all!

@Shvaugn - great idea for birth decade if we can't find for our year. I am going to head off to the GG list above to see what is in there too!

What do you all think of doing it in a "challenge format" which we can sent up a shelf and track independently rather than the big lists with all the requirements for page #s and such. i think that the shelves might be easier but looking for input.

Yes... Good idea, @Susan, if you can make a challenge last a full year...?

I was able to make it a full year and then we can track our books and reviews on a shelf (easier) and will be able to see the # read of 25 each time we log into the group. The only issue is that we can only have 2 challenges at once so I won't be able to post the newest monthly challenge until we close the month before so there will not be overlap but I figure if we all know ahead of time what the challenges are, this should not be an issue.

You will need to use a computer or the browser on your phone. You can't see it in the app.

Is there a larger version of the bingo card graphic available? I like to keep track in a document of my own as well and put the chart in there.

The image has to be hosted online. Goodreads doesn't allow uploads from your computer. If you post the file online, either on your website or a file sharing site like photobucket or flickr, then follow these instructions it should work. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

And if none of that works, (because html is tricky when you have to specify dimensions), it would probably be best to just upload it to another site and link to it.

I think the one for banned books should include books that have been challenged - a list is mentioned on the Canadian website Freedom to Read - which actually has a week February 26 – March 4, 2017

@Rainey I was looking at that site and noticed that a lot of the books tend to be children's books. They also don't note whether the author is Canadian, just that the book has been challenged in Canada. This might involve a bit of digging to weed out the novels, and then note which one's are Canadian for people attempting an all Canadian square.

Hi Sandy - I think we all need to do what we feel comfortable with and the goal is to expand our horizons and have fun with the challenge. You can certainly tailor that square if it feels better or you may find that since we are doing via challenges and a bookshelf your book of the decade/or year would just blend into the bookshelf without identifying your details. :)

She is American. Freedom to Read includes all books,magazines, etc that are challenged.

I went in and identified the Canadians just for those who only want to do a Canadian only board. I don't so it won't affect me.

I can't find the list CBC 100 Non-fiction books that make you proud to be Canadian-can you provide a link to the list?

Here it is - my apologies it is actually the 100 "true stories" that make you proud to be Canadian.

As Susan said, I think we can all use our own judgement as to what works for any particular square, whether we use a Canadian author or not, or keep our birth year or decade to ourselves, anything. When we continued the Bingo challenge after the other group folded, we agreed not to be so strict with the rules and interpretation for the squares. It's about enjoying the challenge more than anything!

N2 and O5 seem to be repeats - both are non fiction

Also can we do repeats - ie have one title fit more than one category?

@Rainey - you are right, there are 2 non-fiction squares; one for picks from the CBC List of 100 True Stories and the other a non-fiction of your choice.

As much as we are trying to keep the flexible, I do thing that we should stick to one unique title per square for a total of 25 different books during the challenge. :)

I was happy to see the mystery square for 2017. I have been meaning to try the series by Inger Ash Wolfe for a while now, so this will probably be what I choose. I love Michael Redhill's writing, so am hopeful this series will work for me.

For the Giller prize book -- were you thinking 2017, @Susan, or do we all think that it's open to a book from any year?

By the way, except for two squares, I already own books that will fill every square (assuming Giller means any year)!

Yes, I too planned out my 2017 Bingo reads already.

I have all the squares except for Canada Reads 2017, if the Giller is any year. If not then I have everything but 2.

Since I am not in Canada, mine are a mixture of mostly Canadian and also Non Canadian authors.

Thanks for setting the bingo up. It does force my reading things I might have wanted to but never got around to.

Oh good, I'm not the only one who immediately started planning what books I wanted to read. I even made a chart and everything. I've got all the squares planned except for Canada Reads 2017 and a book about someone immigrating to Canada. I wanted to wait and get people's recommendations for that one.

I have it mostly planned too. We are eager beavers!!

For a book about someone immigrating to Canada my read is The Amazing Absorbing Boy - Its about a boy who moves from the islands to Toronto and lives in Regent Park (I grew up next door in Moss Park - only Toronto names their ghettos and subsidized housing after parks - ironic Canadian sense of humour I suppose)

Ha ha @Talha. I hardly coined it! It's an expression here in Canada. I thought it was particularly fitting here since the beaver is a Canadian symbol of sorts.
