Denizen (den13) | 1138 comments I've been good about reading books for the monthly tags but abysmal about writing and posting my reviews so better late than never! I really enjoyed this book a great deal although not quite as much as her first book The Snow Child.

To The Bright Edge of the World is a beautifully written book told through journal entries by an Army Lieutenant Colonel, Alan Forrester, leading an exploratory expedition in 1885 Alaska and his wife Sophie, left behind, who explores nature and pushes the boundaries of a woman’s place in the scientific world.

From an entry where Sophie discovers a hummingbird’s nest:

“Yet there it is, dressed in frilly lichen and lined with downy seeds and no bigger than a child’s teacup. The nest is built on a most precarious thimbleberry cane, about 4 feet off of the ground, and with each gust of wind, the stalk waves and trembles.”

Both Alan and Sophie are very sympathetic characters along with many interesting secondary characters. Good writing, good story line, good characters – a strong 4 stars.

Denizen (den13) | 1138 comments I read the e-book. The illustrations might have been better with the hard copy but I felt that I could see everything well enough.
