Joey woke up early that morning and snuck down the stairs to get breakfast ready for the day. She put on her worn, old apron and started to make the eggs. She cracked open a few eggs and then moved to the bacon while the eggs cooked. When she eggs and bacon were done, she moved to making blueberry muffins, the Willow Tree's special. She was making the batter when her Aunt Clara was making her way down the stairs. She smiled at her aunt. " Good mornin' Aunt Clara! How are you this fine day?" Aunt Clara smiled and kissed Joey's cheek. " Just fine darlin'" Aunt Clara sighed and looked at her sternly. " Why didn't you wake me up early. I could have helped you." Joey shook her head. " No, Aunt Clara. You know what the doctor said..." " Get rest. I know. I know. But I just feel so useless." Joey put down the batter and kissed her Aunt's cheek. " You aren't useless Aunt Clara. You're very helpful." She then rubbed her hands. " Are you ready for some coffee?"

Clarissa had woken up later than usual. She hurriedly prepared breakfast for her family and picked up her book. She then went outside, sat by her favorite tree, and began reading.

Joey saw Tom and her heart skipped a beat. She came out and smiled at him. " Good mornin' Tom. What would you like?"

He glanced up at Joey and thought for a moment.
He glanced up at Joey and thought for a moment."I'll have whatever your special of the day might be," He said simply. "Thank you, ma'am."
"Of course," Tom replied. "Thank you."
"Of course," Tom replied. "Thank you."He paid no mind to Joey's kindness. All he was thinking about was getting to the Mine on time.

Joey smiled. " Coming right up, Mr. Dawes." She left him and went to go get his breakfast. She brought out a muffin and two eggs on the side. She then poured him a cup of coffee and smiled sweetly. " Hope you enjoy, Mr. Dawes." Joey them moved to the next table to get orders.

Tom nodded at Joey when she served his food, then he began eating.
Tom nodded at Joey when she served his food, then he began eating.Clarissa loved her only book because of the romantic story. She always daydreamed herself in the maiden's position, only to get married to her true love and live happily ever after.
She was aware that such a thing as that would never happen to her, but it was fun to imagine.
Clarissa stood up and went back into the house. She wanted to make sure she had everything she needed to prepare lunch that afternoon.
Oh, all out of flour! She thought to herself, dreading what she would have to do. That means I have to go to town!

Joey heard glass break and looked to see who it was. Tom muttered something under his breath and started to get up. Joey walked over and looked up at him. " I got it." She started to pick up the pieces carefully and then she saw blood on a piece. She looked at her hands but she didn't see any blood. She then looked at Tom's hand and saw blood trickling down.

Tom had cut his finger on one of the pieces of glass when he tried to clean up the mess.
Tom had cut his finger on one of the pieces of glass when he tried to clean up the mess.Joey came to help sweep up the glass, and Tom wiped his finger on a cloth Joey gave him, but the wound wouldn't stop bleeding. It still needed to be cleaned.

Joey held out her hand so he could put it in hers. " Let me see it Tom. I won't bite." He hesitated then put it in hers. She looked at his calloused hand and felt the warmth of it in hers. She looked at the cut. " It's not a bad cut, it just needs a bandage and a clean." She stood up. " I'll go get the bandages and medical whiskey and then I'll come back." She smiled and then went to go get the things she needed.

Tom continued pressing the cloth against the cut until Joey came back. She cleaned the wound, but Tom didn't move a muscle when the medical whiskey touched his finger. Sure, it stung, but he didn't really care.

Joey smiled up at him sweetly. " You're welcome Tom. Now enjoy the rest of your breakfast and have a blessed day." She got up and went back into the kitchen to fix someone else's breakfast.

Tom finished his breakfast, gave money to Joey, and left the cafe'.
Tom finished his breakfast, gave money to Joey, and left the cafe'.He arrived at the mine within a few minutes and put on his safety gear, grabbing a pick, and heading into the mine.
Clarissa made herself look decently presentable, and headed for the town. She was dreading every second of it, scared that people would stare at her oddly.
Clarissa made herself look decently presentable, and headed for the town. She was dreading every second of it, scared that people would stare at her oddly. She arrived at the town's entrance and and went in. So far, everything seemed okay, until she bumped into someone.

Joey finished order after order in a day dream. She was still thinking of Tom. She scolded herself that it would never happen but she couldn't stop dreaming about it.

James bumped into a woman who fell who fell the ground. He looked down at her. She was a small thing but a beauty too. He helped her up and tipped his hat. " Sorry Miss." That was all he said and then he walked away without another word.

Tom worked in the Mine. He was deep inside and found a good chunk of coal in the wall.
Tom worked in the Mine. He was deep inside and found a good chunk of coal in the wall.He used his pick to carefully wedge the large piece of ore out of the wall. After a few minutes, the coal popped out.
Dust powdered down from the ceiling and the Mine began to shake.
Oh no... Tom thought to himself.
The coal that had been in the cave's wall had been holding the place up. Now that Tom had wedged it out, the Mine was beginning to cave-in.
A young man helped Clarissa up. He briefly stopped and said something to her, and walked away rudely.
A young man helped Clarissa up. He briefly stopped and said something to her, and walked away rudely. This place is filled with rude people! Clarissa thought to herself, brushing the dirt off her dress.

Joey heard a siren. Her heart skipped a beat. The mine! She ran out of the cafe and found Carissa. " Tom!" They both said in unison. They both started to run towards the mine

By the time Clarissa and Joey had arrived at the mine, the dust was settling. Injured men were being pulled out of a hole the men had dug. There was no sign of Tom yet.

James pulled out another man that was alive but his leg was busted up pretty bad. He started to walk towards the doctor when he heard people running up to him.
Joey ran up to Tom's unconscious body. Clarriss right behind her.

Clarissa panicked when she saw Tom's unconscious body. The medics were tending to his leg, but she still felt like it wasn't enough.

Joey looked up at the doctor as he examined Tom's body. " He's alright but his leg is badly broken. We can fix it but he will have a limp for the rest of his life." The doctor told Joey to rip off an piece of his shirt and put it into his mouth. He then told Clarissa to hold him down. He that looked at Joey and told her to sew up the gap while he pushed the bone into place. She nodded and they counted to three. One...two...three.... The doctor pressed down and Ton jerked up and screamed in pain. Joey sewed as fast as she could. She hated the he was in pain. She finished and the doctor put a splint on his leg and then wrapped a bandage around it. Tom's eyes flutter closed as he went unconscious again.

Clarissa prayed over Tom after he fell unconscious once again. She didn't want something bad to happen to him.
Clarissa prayed over Tom after he fell unconscious once again. She didn't want something bad to happen to him.Tom had a bloody gash on the back of his head, but since he was laying flat down, no one noticed. Not even Joey and Clarissa.

Joey looked over Tom and saw something at the back of his head. She tapped Clarria's shoulder. " What's that on the back of his head Clarissa?" Joey asked anxiously.

Joey prayed for him too. She couldn't loose him. Not now. Not ever. She prayed with tears rolling down her face.

((It's totally okay. xD It was my fault, I misspelled something. It's fixed it now, so it should be easy to understand.))
((It's totally okay. xD It was my fault, I misspelled something. It's fixed it now, so it should be easy to understand.))Clarissa and Joey stayed with Tom for the rest of the day. When the medics moved his body, they helped.

Joey went home and helped them get Tom into his room okay and Clarissa and Joey stayed with him. " I hope and pray he'll make it, Clarissa." She squeezed her friend's hand.

"Me too," Clarissa said. "I can't lose him now, not after mother left!"
"Me too," Clarissa said. "I can't lose him now, not after mother left!"To distract herself, Clarissa thought about earlier that day, when that strange man had bumped into her.
And after all that, She thought to herself. I didn't even get the flour!

Joey looked at Clarrissa. " We need to take turns keeping an eye on him. Do you want to go first?"

Clarissa put her hand on Tom's head. He had a fever. She grabbed a damp cloth and laid it on his forehead.
Clarissa put her hand on Tom's head. He had a fever. She grabbed a damp cloth and laid it on his forehead. Her mind wandered back to her romantic story, and she wondered if she would ever find 'the one' for her at all.

Joey tossed and turned all night and she got up before down broke. She walked over to Tom's room and found Clarissa asleep. She walked over and tapped her shoulder. " I think you should go get some rest. I'll look after him." Clarissa nodded and left. Joey sat down in the chair and grabbed and wet cloth and wiped Tom's face. She started to hum Amazing Grace.

Clarissa went to her room and fell asleep almost immediately.
Clarissa went to her room and fell asleep almost immediately.Tom dreamed that he was riding his horse, Bandit, on a field that went on for miles. In the dream, he fell off of the horse and injured his leg badly. He could actually feel the pain, and the dream became a nightmare.

Tom started to moan and toss and turn. She stood up and hummed the song louder and started to brush his hair with her hands. He started to go quiet but then his eyes opened.

Clarissa woke up to the sound of Tom's moaning. She rushed out of bed and into Tom's room.
Clarissa woke up to the sound of Tom's moaning. She rushed out of bed and into Tom's room.Tom opened his eyes. Everything was foggy at first, but when his eyesight cleared, he could see Joey.
"What... what happened..." He demanded wearily.

She looked behind her and saw Clarissa. She stood up. " Maybe you should let Clarissa tell you."

Clarissa walked over to Tom's bed and knelt down so he could see her better. After she explained everything, Tom's eyes were filled with anxiety as he looked down and tried to move his injured leg, but it wouldn't budge.
Clarissa walked over to Tom's bed and knelt down so he could see her better. After she explained everything, Tom's eyes were filled with anxiety as he looked down and tried to move his injured leg, but it wouldn't budge."Don't move," Clarissa said. "Don't make the injury any worse."
"W..was anybody killed?" He asked quietly.
"Yes. Three people didn't make it," Clarissa said. "Seventeen people were injured. I'm sorry, Tom."
Tom covered his face with his hands. He knew that this was his fault.

Joey stood out in the hallway and waited for Clarissa to come out and say that she could go back in. She hated to see Tim hurt. It hurt her too. She sighed and slid down the wall to the floor and started to pray for Tom and Clarissa.

Clarissa stood up and kissed Tom on his forehead.
Clarissa stood up and kissed Tom on his forehead."Don't beat yourself up about it, Tom." She said softly.
Tom glanced at Clarissa. "I should be beating myself up about it. The cave-in was my fault. I injured those men. I killed those men. It's all because of me." He looked away.
Clarissa's eyes filled with tears as she watched Tom. She went out into the hall and let Joey back into the room.

Joey sat down quietly so he wouldn't notice she came in. Maybe she should leave. Maybe she was a nucience. She started to stand up but he reached for her hand.

"Stay," Tom said, more of a plead than a demand. "I can't be alone with myself."
"Stay," Tom said, more of a plead than a demand. "I can't be alone with myself."Clarissa went back into her room and fell back asleep.

She nodded and sat down. He never let go of her hand and she held it in hers. She saw that he was sweating. She stood up and got a cold, wet cloth and rubbed it over his forehead. She started to hum a hymn she loved dearly as a child. The old rugged cross.

Tom was glad that Joey was there, but was still beating himself up on the inside.
Tom was glad that Joey was there, but was still beating himself up on the inside.I should've known! That piece of coal was holding up the cave, He thought to himself. I'm a terrible person.
After a while, Tom finally fell into a light sleep.

Joey watched Tom fall asleep. She sighed and sat back down in her chair. She looked down and saw he was still holding her hand. She blushed and tried to take it out but he groaned and squeezed her hand. So she didn't move her hand. She closed her eyes and said, what felt like the millionth time, a prayer for Tom and Clarissa.
