Thoughts on the new series set to begin in the Fall 2014..? Interesting idea...

Dwayne Keller | 5 comments The ads look really good, building the background of Gotham before there was a Batman.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I hadn't heard of this one. Hopefully it comes out

Reportedly there have been 16 episodes ordered so far. Not bad for a show where we have not seen the pilot. There is a 3 minute trailer...

Most of the actors are new to me, but casting seems really good - the actors look the part. Looking forward to seeing some new talent

message 6: by Ronyell (new)

Ronyell (rabbitearsblog) | 60 comments I'm interested in seeing how Gotham City was like before Batman showed up and hopefully, this will focus on Commissioner Gordon before he met Batman (well, according to the trailer, it looks like he's about to meet Bruce Wayne before he became Batman).

message 7: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 425 comments Knowing that in earlier stories that Gotham was even seedier and more crooked than before That Batman showed up, and knowing that the villains will be there in their earlier forms as well, I'm sure it will make you realize your glad you were born where you were born. lol.

Its going to be a lot darker than Nolan portrayed in in Batman Begins, that's for sure.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I'm sure most of us here will be watching this one. Can't wait after the trailers. I always found Gotham fascinating anyway.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Penguin's mother cast in Gotham
Link

I have no idea who that actress or actor are, but the guy especially looks perfect for a Penguin role.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) BTW, love the logo for Gotham and the updated banner for the group.

Thanks - I figured I'd mix it up every once in awhile. The Guy playing Penguin - his name fails me, but yeah - he has the right look - as do the rest of the cast...

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Wow, it's sneaking up on me then. Didn't know it was already next week.

Jeff | 425 comments on Monday !!!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Finally the premiere is here. What did everyone think?

Not sure yet how I feel about Gordon, although his acting is well enough. Digging the actor for his partner (don't feel like looking all these names up.) Loved the characters of Penguin and the small introduction of Ivy. Loving Jada Pinkett in her role.

Makes sense they opened the show with Bruce and his parent tragedy. Thought it was a worthy first episode, loved the ending.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I also have no idea who that watching thief girl is supposed to be - catwoman?

message 20: by James (new)

James | 340 comments Mod
I enjoyed the first episode overall. There were some really dramatic moments, like the murder and Gordon's promise to Bruce. I think that the story itself was good, the acting was good throughout.
One criticism though - I feel like the creators were trying too hard, rushing the story, trying to fit certain characters into the first episode, and that would have been okay, if it were a two hour premier.
Erin - Gordon's partner is Harvey Bullock.
And the girl is Selina Kyle aka Catwoman.
Looking forward to episode 2, but in the mean time... opinions?

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I see on Facebook discussions a lot of people agreed with you about trying to rush too many characters in the first episode. That should probably calm down; a lot of times the first episodes of shows are a little awkward with things such as that.

Jeff | 425 comments Erin *Series Addict* wrote: "I also have no idea who that watching thief girl is supposed to be - catwoman?"
yes Erin it is indeed catwoman a younger version of her and with a set of older fashioned goggles. I think they are perfect.

The actress looks the part - looking forward to them expanding her role and hearing what she has to say.

I have to ask - anyone else bothered by the missing milk?

YES!

For a second there I didn't know what you meant!

But I did totally notice that...okay, this isn't very spoilery, but I for the benefit of those (like me) that don't really want to hear details before they see it, I'll tag it.

(view spoiler)

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Apparently you guys are more observant than me, I must have not been paying much attention at the milk part.

message 26: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 425 comments I saw it too, but I attribute that tot he fact that she lives by stealing such as fruit and other food and drink I had assumed that she drank a good deal of it before giving some to kitty.

Curious about her and Bruce's relationship then, I'm sure she will approach him sometime soon since ::minor and probably unneeded spoiler:: (view spoiler)

message 28: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 425 comments IT would explain the love/hate relationship they have with each other. I'm glad to see they are binging that on to the table. Keeping her a silent witness for now keeping track of the things going on in "Her" city is a nice touch.
In the future, when she does meet The Batman, she still doesn't know who it is, but something lie this set up would show how she has a certain feeling to Batman, without her knowing why. I think its a very good idea.
Even her, "costume" works for this early version of her.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Jeff wrote: "IT would explain the love/hate relationship they have with each other. I'm glad to see they are binging that on to the table. Keeping her a silent witness for now keeping track of the things going..."

I agree, the costume and character totally work so far.

I recognize the actor playing Alfred from being the general on the horror flick Dog Soldiers. Loved him in that too, so I think they made a good choice with his casting.

message 30: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 425 comments I think so too. I did recognize him also from Dog Soldiers a good film.
As to the idea that they introduced too many characters, I think they did a great job by meeting a few. Its not like your being introduced to the super villain versions of themselves, but their normal characters they made them what they become later on.
It gives you scope as to what they looked like before their transformations and what will probably lead up to it. I think its a great move.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I've gotten my mother watching it with me - so far we're both hooked. We enjoyed the second episode even better than the first. Like the dark and quirky humor that sometimes pops up, especially with the insensitive mayor. The scene with Fish and Falcone was mesmerizing. Bruce's small psychological changes fascinate me.

message 32: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 425 comments Erin your right on about that. The second was even better than the first ep. I like Bullock a lot. And to think Ed Nygma actually works for the GCPD. Its going to be awesome to watch the development of all these beings into the characters we know.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Who is the Dollmaker? The only villain close to that I can think of is the Toyman from Superman storyline.

message 34: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 425 comments The dollmaker is a serial killer. He as the one that removed the Jokers face surgically and then reattached it using clips and stiches.

message 35: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 425 comments He as basically introduced inthe first issue of Detective Comics, New 52 series or volume 2. HE has a history that seems connected to other serial killers like Jack in the Box and the Orifice.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Jeff wrote: "The dollmaker is a serial killer. He as the one that removed the Jokers face surgically and then reattached it using clips and stiches."

Ah.
Yikes then.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Last night's episode wasn't quite as good as the first two, but I enjoyed it. My mom and I love the humor with the partner and hope he gets to stay around.

Have we seen any sign of Harvey Dent anywhere?

I'm noticing Gotham will be one of those shows that enjoys ending with a small cliffhanger every episode (sigh)

message 38: by James (new)

James | 340 comments Mod
Harvey Dent has been cast - I don't know if it has been said what episode he will appear in

message 39: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 425 comments Harvey Bullock will def be there for the whole run since his character changes eventually and becomes a very good friend of James Gordon later on in life.

A number of people on some of the message boards concerning Gotham, despite their looking forward to the show, are still apprehensive about a show concerning the stories of the supporting characters of the Batman family being able to carry a whole season without Batman.
Well, I think without a doubt, this show as of the third episode has more than proven that there are enough characters, history and origins to fill several seasons up to a point where Bruce is old enough to start on his Detective comics career.
Its going to be a fun ride.

I agree! I actually like the idea about having a Batman TV series that doesn't focus on Batman and actually focus on the other characters. I can't wait to see where this show is going in the future!

message 41: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 425 comments if you think about it, if the series is successful and can have a run of about say 6 or 7 seasons, then by that time the villains will have probably gotten their acts together to be the crooks they are always portrayed mostly.
Gotham is a gritty show about a city that is so corrupt, that has little chance of any kind of saving of it, no redemption in its future, yet but save for one man trying to bring some kind of honesty and justice to the system.
Gotham isn't about super heroes or villains per say, but the development of good vs. evil and about the ones that have lost their way to the wrong side. And about the ones that are just sitting on the side lines waiting to reap the rewards that may come to them for waiting.
Its about saving a city before its savior comes to it.

Ben McKenzie as Jim Gordon is doing a great job - I think. I really like how Gordon is written and portrayed, and I would probably watch the show if it was just about Gordon - even if it started with him in Chicago - prior to Gotham.
I don't know that I would say the same of Harvey Bullock or the Penguin (watch a show just built around one of them) - but these actor are doing a great job too - sometimes stealing the show.

James | 340 comments Mod
With Birds of Prey, except for a brief mention, we didn't have Bruce/Batman.. but the "supporting characters". I don't know that him not being there was the problem. And not knocking the show - I rather enjoyed it... I guess there was some reason it was dropped.. .

message 44: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 425 comments I think at the time, the time for superhero vehicles hadn't happened yet. There was no really good writing and there wasn't much pushing the envelope at that time either. The rain of the superhero movie only really started with Ironman. once that happened, it was a whole new ball game and superheroes became a serious item on the screen because it was being written and produced well.
If they tried to do a real Birds of Prey show again, it would be done right and keeping in line with current comics. I used to watch birds of Prey also, but it was kinda lacking. The black guy cop at the time was from young and the restless soap he didn't have the right feel about him.

Good to know on the character.

I really don't get the apprehension so many have - the back stories of characters usually fascinate me and they have a lot of rich, promising material to work with. They're highlighting the city itself as a massive background.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Jeff wrote: "Its about saving a city before its savior comes to it. "

That lines good enough to be a tagline for the show...

Gordon's grew on me more (thankfully.) Penguin was perfectly cast and really does steal the scenes when he's in them.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) From Entertainment Weekly:

The dark drama rises. After weeks of ratings declines, Fox’s Gotham reversed its trend and went up 9 percent Monday night.
Gotham had 6.5 million viewers and a 2.4 rating. The show also broke its usual crime-of-the-week format for a heavily serialized episode that gave more screen time than ever to fan favorite The Penguin.

Great news, as I'm loving the show but was discouraged how the ratings keep going down. I saw in the comments someone guessing it was partly since they moved Big Bang theory too - funny but likely accurate.

Last week's episode was lackluster, but this one's was excellent. I was happy to return to the other characters and their antics. A lot of surprising twists I didn't see and I can't help but love most of the villains.

I have decided I officially dislike Barbara. The actress just doesn't work for the role and their scenes are awkward.
