Litsy Reading Challenge 2017 discussion
19: By an indie publisher

I have SO MANY IDEAS for this category since I've worked with dozens of indie publishers. Literally I don't even know where to start. I almost feel it's too broad a category but then again not everyone knows or reads indie published books on the reg. Here are a couple best-selling recs that I have off the top of my head from my favorite presses that also may or may not qualify for other bingo spaces in the challenge (because why not read multiple indie pubbed books!):
Graywolf Press--
Grief Is the Thing with Feathers
Citizen: An American Lyric
The Argonauts
Blackass
The Empathy Exams: Essays
Coffee House Press--
I'll Tell You in Person
Problems
The Hope of Floating Has Carried Us This Far
Copper Canyon--
Night Sky with Exit Wounds
Then Come Back: The Lost Neruda Poems

According to their Wikipedia page, yes, they are!

That's wonderful. I just got my very first Persephone book the other day & I can't wait to read it. Could this be my first prompt completion of 2017???

"I have this on my TBR, too. Between this & my Persephone Press book, how will I decide which to count?!?! (Kidding!) #firstworldproblems #blameitonlitsy
I'm leaning towards Haymarket Books for this. They publish Rebecca Solnit among others. I wonder if the ACLU Press would count? I just ordered one from them.

Hope you like it. I don't want to give it too much hype.
Is Pushkin Children's Books/Steerforth Press considered an indie press? I'd like to read Wildwitch: Wildfire (it's a translated book too. :) )

I want to read every single one of these. Thanks so much for sharing!

Cassava Republic is one of my favourite publisher. They do amazing work. Also love Graywolf Press. If my pick is non-fiction, it might come from Verso books - another wonderful publisher.
A few other publishers I enjoy are Tin House, Two Dollar Radio, Open Letters (translated works), and Archipelago (also translations). So many good indie presses!
Two of my favourite small indie presses are Twelfth Planet Press (SFF and crime), and Fablecroft (speculative fiction). Jessica I see that you read YA - from TPP try Kaleidoscope, Defying Doomsday, or the Year's Best YA anthologies. At Fablecroft, have a look at Cranky Ladies of History, The Bone Chime Song and Other Stories, or (not YA, comes with warnings) In Your Face.
Hi everyone! Here is a great resource to help you with this category:

Thanks for the list, Jessica! I chose More - it will hit my indie publisher plus a current event book for another reading challenge I am also joining.
Claudia Rankine's Citizen:An American Lyric is a great choice for this one. An incredibly important work.
I also thought about The Braque Connection. It is published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, which I would guess counts?

I would also like to know if it counts as an indie publisher? If not, I'm planning on reading X by Ilyasah Shabazz for Litsy A to Z, and it's published by Candlewick Press, so I'm covered. Although His Bloody Project also looks amazing...I'm torn!
