"Yes you are and yes she probably did. But for all she knows, we leaped back to one of the Cities." Anika shrugged. "Now, if we hurry, we might be able to avoid my dad. He's usually home by this time of day. We can handle my mom if she catches us, but it'll start the apocalypse if my dad sees you." She shook her head. "For being such a pest to me all the time he's surprisingly protective."
Anika rolled her eyes. "Alright fine. But don't say I didn't warn you when Isla tracks you down and hounds you eternally."
"How very gentlemanly of him," said a high and sharp voice nearby. Anika's mother appeared just a few feet away, her face cold, her hands on her hips, and he sneer dripping with distaste. "The dirt sort of ruins the image but I suppose his actions speak louder than his appearance."
Anika jumped slightly and put on a straight face. "Oh hi mom! How long have you been there?"
"Since you got here," Anika's mom replied, scanning Derek carefully with her lips pressed together in a mildly disgusted fashion.

"Oh don't leave on my account. Ace is currently at his work and it's apparent that the eldest Blare child is hunting you and my daughter," Rinna said with an approving nod. "You're the boy raised within the Neverseen without a proper family, correct?"
Anika sighed inwardly and closed her eyes to try and block out the formality of her mother's speech. She wondered if she could do Morse code with her heartbeat to signal for Derek to run for his life.

Rinna nodded slowly. "Hm." She looked at Anika. "Chin up. Eyes open. We aren't at a Planting so there's no need to look like you're mourning," she snapped.
Aaaaaand that was exactly why she was trying to avoid her mother. Anika did as her mother said but rolled her eyes as soon as she'd turned her focus back to Derek.
"Who are your current guardians again?" Rinna asked Derek.

Anika let out a tiny sigh. Good! Save yourself! Escape!
Rinna gave Anika a sidelong glance, then smiled at Derek. "It's alright, you aren't disturbing us at all. Would you like to stay for dinner?"
Anika's jaw dropped involuntary and she struggled to regain her composure. She tried to catch Derek's eye to earn him away. Nothing good could come out of this.

Anika opened her mouth to tell him to bolt, but her mother cut in. "So polite and thoughtful! It is unnecessary though." Rinna smiled brighter. "Dinner should be ready soon. Just in time for you two to get cleaned up."
Anika pressed her lips together and huffed.

"Mmmmmkay mom I'm gonna show Derek to the guest room so uh... bye!" Anika grabbed Derek's hand and pulled him into a run with her to the house. She shook her head and said once they were out of hearing range of her mother, "Evil demon! She cornered you on purpose!"

((YES!!!))
"If you look in the guest room closet you'll understand." Anika shook her head. "It shouldn't be very long but she might stretch it out because she's diabolical, don't bring up the 'pricking my finger' bit, and um, just try to act as civil as possible and you should be good." She shoved him inside the house and shut the door behind them.

"Well it was my parents or Isla and believe me, we got the better half." Anika shook her head. "Come on." She started walking up the Beauty and the Beast stairs that curled up into a higher floor of the house.
Anika pointed to a deep blue door. "You go there. Pick something from the closet and try to choose something at least sort of formal. My parents are appearance freaks." She rolled her eyes. "There's a bathroom with a shower. You might want to use use it..." She wrinkled her nose.
Anika snickered and went to her own room to pick out one of her 'Ew both parents are home so I have to please both of them at the same time' dresses and to shower, because she was just about as covered in dirt as Derek. Stupid exploding house. Oh she should also probably remind Derek to not mention that part either.
Anika was picking her shoes by the time Derek had fixed the screaming shower, so she was all puffed and girlified by the time he was done fixing his hair. She scowled at the annoyingly fitted purple dress that's she'd settled on. It was both her mom's and her dad's favourite thing for her to wear. "It's more trouble than it's worth," she grumbled as she walked out of her room. She saw Derek coming out of his and examined him. She nodded approvingly. "Good good."
Anika pretended to not notice his staring, even though she did, and grinned wickedly. "Yeeaaahhh. I rigged it. Sorry, I should have warned you. Usually that room is given to annoying cousins during the visiting months so I messed with the shower to freak them out."
"Next time huh?" Anika winked but nodded. "Probably." She linked her arm with his, having regained her peppier attitude with the break from her mother's presence, and walked him down to the dining room. Her parents were already seated. With a sharp look from her father, Anika dropped her arm from Derek's and sat in her chair. She had been ever so conveniently placed by her mother, while Derek was closer to her father. She gave Derek a Tred carefully sort of look.
"It's not private if you were invited dear," Anika's mom chimed.
Anika narrowed her eyes at her mom suspiciously. She was planning something... Her mom was never that nice! Not even to family!
"What's your name again boy?" Anika's dad asked in his usual harsh way.

"Guardians?" Ace asked.
"Yes, he's the boy the Neverseen raised, remember?" Rinna chimed in.
Anika was trying very hard not to hit her head on the table as hard as she could.

Rinna shrugged.
"Well, Derek, what is your relation to my daughter?" Ace said with a complete subject change.
Anika couldn't stop herself from face palming. "Dad, can you not right now?" she complained.

Ace narrowed his eyes slightly and looked at Anika. "Are you sure that's all?"
Anika just gave up and let her head hit the table. Maybe if she hit it hard enough she could knock herself out...

Ace seemed to relax a little. "Alright."
Anika sat up straight and let out a sigh. "Hey, I have an idea, let's stop interrogating the poor kid and eat the food in front of our faces!"

Rinna laughed lighty. "No need to apologize."
Anika scowled at her mom. "Mother dear? You seem to be in a better mood than earlier, may I ask why?"
"Am I not allowed to be in a good mood just because?" Her mom asked.
You? No. "I didn't say that." Anika's smile felt more like a sneer.

Anika took a bite of her food while she waited for her mom to give her a real answer.
"Oh alright. Well, you know how I was supposed to have the party tonight?" Rinna asked, caving under Anika's expecting look.
"Oh yeah..." Anika nodded slowly, growing more and more cautious.
"I've moved it to tomorrow evening, I wanted you to attend but you've been out all day. It's themed like a human prom, so everyone coming must bring a date-"
Anika cut her mom off. "Nope! Sorry but this is nope on like five different levels." She shook her head. "Hu-uh. This topic is being cut off right now."

"But Anika you never-"
"Nope! I never come to your parties for a reason." Anika shook her head again.
"Oh come," her mom whined. "Please? It wont be that bad."
Her dad cleared his throat. "Are you suggesting Anika and Derek attend together Rinna?"
Rinna nodded with a bright smile.
Anika covered her face. "Noooooooooo."

Ace grunted and frowned at Rinna. "You couldn't have consulted me on this?"
"Of course not. You got here only moments before the children came down." Rinna smiled.
Anika pouted. "Maybe we shoulda just risked Isla...," she muttered.
Rinna looked at Derek. "So how about it?"
"Moooooom!" Anika put her head in her hands.

Rinna clapped. "Wonderful!"
Ace was still frowning, but he didn't say anything.
And Anika just sort of stared off into oblivion wondering how long it would take to suffocate herself by holding her breath. Death sounded nice. If she was dead she wouldn't have to go to the party. Yeah. Sounded good.

"Save yourself!" Anika whisper/hissed.
Rinna shot Anika a look then smiled at Derek. "Of course. It starts at seven thirty tomorrow. I'll have Anika hail you so your tie can match her dress.
Anika shooed Derek away. "Run for it before she decided you should come over early and have my dad do your hair!"

Ace smirked, clearly proud that he had done his fatherly duty in intimidating Derek.
Anika waved. "Yep sure thing try not to break a bone or something." She rolled her eyes. "Now hurry and escape before I shove you out!"

((*rofl* Rihanna))
As soon as Derek was out of the room, Anika's mom dropped her cheeriness. "We're going shopping tomorrow."
Anika made a high pitched whining noise and left the room, waving to Derek as she ditched her heels and ran up the stairs to try and hide from the fact that her mother was taking her dress shopping.
((Hm fun alright so you wanna time skip to the party thingy?))

Anika answered the door with a very fake smile plastered on her face. She recognized it was Derek and looked him up and down. "You certainly do know how to clean up," she complimented. "Now come in so I can get off greeting duty."
"I feel like one too," Anika rolled her eyes. "Since I got poofed up. People like getting here very early so don't worry about being late." She twirled one of her loose black hairs then tucked it behind her ear. "Can you please look menacing at the other guys? I've seen about five guys get smacked by their dates because they were staring at me. And I understand why-" she smirked "-but it's annoying."
Anika chuckled. "Hi." She smiled up at him but then looked down and frowned when her heart fluttered again. "Why does it keep doing that?" She whined.
Anika felt her face heat up and cocked her head. She'd never actually liked anyone before, so it was actually a possibility because she wouldn't know how it felt. And considering the murmur only happened around Derek... "Oh my gosh I do!" She shook her head a little. "How odd." She looked back up at Derek. "Howmin the world did that happen?"
Anika looked at him curiously then grinned. "No! Aww!" She laughed. "Well, it might just be my pride, but I'm thinking maybe the feeling is mutual."
"They're upstairs giving a grand tour to a few new guests I think," Anika said, looking around. "The food is over here." She lead him to the snack table. "There has been a lot of research put into this party." She shook her head. "Those poor human teenagers having to attend these sort of things all the time."
((Lol!))
Anika snorted. "Usually I'm not at these parties. I avoid them like the plague honestly. My mother likes playing matchmaker to torture me."

Anika looked around and wrinkled her nose at the ones who were staring. "I don't either." She rolled her eyes at them and caught a glance of her parents coming back downstairs with their guests. "Ew. Here they come. Prepare yourself."
Anika saw her mom's sights lock on her and Derek. "I wouldn't recommend it. Just uh... look cute and answer questions pointed at you." She put on her sparkling smile as her parents lead a group of peppy looking people. "Hello mother, father! Who are your friends?" She asked brightly.
"Hello Derek! I'm so glad you came!" Rinna chirped. She gestured to the people with her. "This is [a bunch of names I don't feel like coming up with right now]," she introduced, gesturing to them each in turn.
Ace scanned Derek with a scowl. He straightened up and appeared to grow in size.

They all nodded in greeting and Char (one of the peoples) smiled brightly. "Are you Anika's date?" she asked him.
Char nodded and looked at Anika. "You have a lovely house dear."
"Thank you! Though really it's the gnomes who built it that you should be complimenting!" Anika replied cheerily.
"Oh could we?" Chirped another one of the women to Rinna.
"I don't see why not." Rinna swirled away with her husband and friends.
Anika let out a sigh and dropped her bright act. "Being HAPPY is exhausting."

Anika nodded. "Basically. It's either that or we go hide." She pouted. "My room has probably been overrun with the other couples our age." She realised too late that she'd said 'other couples' instead of just 'couples'. She blushed a little but added nothing, hoping he just missed it.
"If you don't mind..." Anika nodded a little. At that moment she was quite unaware of the very irritated looking guys staring at them and their even more irritated looking dates. In fact, the only things she was actually aware of were her ridiculously loud heart beat and how close Derek actually was.
