Overall, I thought this book was an enjoyable read. The adventure/quest aspect was fun, at least at the beginning, and the cast of unique characters kept me intrigued and coming back for more. I did feel that I kept going on for a bit too long - it seemed the quests sort of devolved into new and separate quests, and by that point, I just wanted a resolution (and some more gosh darn character development *coughcoughKatPotentecoughcough*). Speaking of Kat, the relationship between her and Clay seemed terribly forced and one-sided and most certainly unnecessary. And the fact that Kat's character wasn't entirely developed made Clay's obsession with her even more disturbing. All this aside, I did appreciate all the design and typography talk and the large role it played in the story. And, of course, all of the unique characters. I just want a book about all of Penumbra's loyal bookstore patrons! There looks to be a sequel on the way, which I may end up reading, just to see where it goes from here (although the epilogue seemed to wrap things up pretty nicely).
