Over in a Q&A here--

Kel Kade said:
I've discovered that some of the characters' actions and personalities can be interpreted in severely different ways, even though everyone is reading the same book. Frisha is one of those that seems to be two almost completely different people depending on the reader's interpretation. In a way, it's sad because most don't seem to view her the way I do, but it's also intriguing.

---------------------------

So, let's discuss Frisha!

In another thread here some people thought she wasn't right for Rezkin. What do you think? What are Frisha's strengths and weaknesses? Would another person suit Rezkin better? Or is not getting stabbed in his sleep good enough?

IS there a spell on Rezkin making Frisha act like a jealous teenager?

Have we just not seen enough of what Frisha is like? Or know her thoughts (other than the jealousy)? Or is she just young and naive and will develop as the story goes on?

Frisha DOES seem to be liked or kind of despised... Why? And what camp do you fall in? Team Frisha or not?

Lorraine (Raine11) | 40 comments I have hopes for Frisha in that I want more depth to her or growth to happen. I want her to suit Rezkin more but right now she doesn't seem like much of a parter, just a role filler.
There have been hints at levels of maturaty in her but they are often sidelined. I have suspected that there is a side affect of the 'spells' regarding Rezkin which causes all females and some males to act predictably a certain way. What I would like to have happen or shown is that while Frisha is affected by these, her natural common sense or strength of spirit is helping her to counter those, albeit slowly, and help her see the real Rezkin. :) I say 'real' with some humor as he has been taught to be so many different things.
I have approved that the author hasn't tried to make her a fighter/warrior. I think/hope that she is being set up to be something just as valuable but different. She shouldn't try to compete with Rezkin that way, there is no way that could work, but if they could end up complementing each other, that would be awesome.
I am team Frisha. I don't want that aspect to change, just grow.

*** SPOILER WARNING, BOOKS 1 & 2 ***

Frisha, and Tam, are the two ordinary Everyman characters who are thrown into a wild adventure upon meeting Rezkin. It's a bit of a twist on the typical hero/heroine who starts out in his/her small village (or planet, if you're Luke Skywalker)... and they somehow get caught up in world/kingdom/galaxy -changing events.

They also serve as Rezkin's ties to everyday humanity--who teach him simple values--things that are totally foreign to him. He needs this if he isn't to become the heartless assassin he's been trained to be.

I think that Frisha has a lot of potential. She already was bold enough to just take Tam along with her on her trip to the General. She's willing to make an effort to be the General's heir even though being a commoner will cause her lots of problems with the social circles she'll need to interact with. She isn't impressed by the nobility or people others feel they need to cater to... She said to Tam that she usually doesn't ever have her head turned by a handsome man and that it's weird that she's so jealous about Rezkin. She doesn't worry about fashion and wears sensible outfits. She sees the sense in learning to protect herself, even though she's really not good with swords or other weapons.

She basically starts out as a pretty solid character. It could be that Rez is just so far out of range of anyone that she seems to be inadequate as a girlfriend?

Along the way to the capital city, she is still naive, but learning, and doesn't totally fall apart when they have to leave the ship and travel overland and are fighting bandits.

She seem a bit goofy in her naivety, but it really is a good balance to Rezkin being a cold killing machine. She is a counter-balance... a very small, weak one, but still there to kind of anchor him to more normal humanity.

So far she's shown herself to be adaptable, and willing to learn, and able to deal with extreme events, even if so far she's been just towed along in Rezkin's wake.

Compared to the other women, she's honest and reliable and kind and a safe place for Rezkin (someone who won't stab him in his sleep!). She's still loyal to him and is someone he is willing to fight for and protect--not just as a girlfriend and friend, but as one of the many humans who are worthy of protecting.

I think she has plenty of room to grow and show herself able to measure up to more tough situations. So far, there's nothing to show that she couldn't do much more.

Supposedly the spell cast on Rezkin will be less effective the more people actually know him... Since he's revealed himself, I'm curious if we'll get to know Frisha a bit more, since she'll be less influenced by the spell. I think something was causing her to be so jealous. (Although, hey, I think she's sort of feisty to begin with and would be a little jealous of all those other women, spell or not.)

At any rate--she's still important as a tether to Rezkin's humanity.

Hello April. I completely agree with everything you said. You stated everything I wanted to say but with more eloquence. I do want to add though that since both Tam and Frisha are the two ordinary everyday people tossed into world changing events and are important ties to help Rezkin be human, that status has changed now that Rezkin has revealed himself. At least to a point. What I am hoping for is some more focus on their growth and outworld accomplishments than just all the focus on Rezkin.

Let me copy you a bit and use a different example :) What I am really hoping for is more of a dynamic of say Aragorn to the hobbits, Aragorn being the warrior, king, etc but the hobbits have a completely different kind of strength that isn't overshadowed. I really hope that both for Tam and Frisha, their chance to really shine this way will be a focal point. You can see this by all the examples you stated but that focus is lost a bit in that it is outshined by the focus on Rezkin.

I will admit, I do want the jealousy aspect to be toned down to near non existent but that is just a personal preference. Jealousy is a painful feeling and if prolonged causes damage. More often than not, the person hurt by it the most is the person feeling it.

I seriously cannot wait for the next book! I hope you don't mind me putting my two cents in again :) I am a really shy person so it takes some strength for me to say all this and actually post it.

April | 192 comments Mod
Lorraine-- Well, I'm glad you posted! :) I'm glad there are others out there who think Frisha has potential and shouldn't be dumped for some super-skilled swordswoman. (Some others thought the girl Pallas--ugh, I need to actually READ the books again instead of just do the audio!--fell in love with would be better for Rezkin.)

I do agree that I hope the immature jealousy stops! No more little-girl cat-fights, please! Of course, if there's some scheming woman after Rez, I wouldn't mind if Frisha schemed right back--but in a more considered manner.

I do like the LotR hobbits analogy. Kel Kade has suggested that there will be more than 3 books in the series, so I think there will be room for Frisha and Tam to grow. I like how Tam is already growing--by finally accepting Rez's bloody past and helping him with the tournament. And while he's still a bit of a head-in-the-clouds (or rather, head in a book!) romantic adventure kind of guy, I think he is seeing that... like Sam tells Frodo... the adventures are not quite the same when you're living them.

I don't think Tam is quite there yet! But I bet he will be.

Sam, when he is resolved:
“I don't know how to say it, but after last night I feel different. I seem to see ahead, in a kind of way. I know we are going to take a very long road, into darkness; but I know I can't turn back. It isn't right to see Elves now, nor dragons, nor mountains, that I want - I don't rightly know what I want: but I have something to do before the end, and it lies ahead, not in the Shire. I must see it through, sir, if you understand me.”

---
I really look forward to Tam and Frisha growing and maturing and finding their strengths.

They have the most to do to change. And it's cool that Rez, too, needs to grow... if not in Skills so much, as in finding his own ethics beyond The Rules, and in his care for friends and acquaintances and even people he doesn't know at all...

We saw lots of growth in the nobles in Reign of Madness. I loved that!

Tanya | 54 comments I am going to go against the grain here, and say that I am not a fan Of Frisha. Her jealous temper tantrums are very immature. She has been that way towards Rez since the beginning. She had known him a night, and the next morning she threw a fit because he gave his shirt to another girl. Even though some of the misunderstandings are humorous. To me Frisha comes across as a child throwing a tantrum. To me, Frisha seems to only like Rez for his looks. She knows next to nothing about him so how could she like him for who he is?

If I were to choose a women for Rez it would be the female his sponsored at the duel. She didn't fall all over Rez because of the way he looked, she is capable of looking after herself. She seems like a strong brave women. I liked her character best out of all the females in the book.

April | 192 comments Mod
Yes, the jealousy was tiresome. Do you think it might be a result of a spell on Rezkin? Or do you think it's just immature girls fighting over his handsome, muscular bod?

You aren't the only one who feels this way about Frisha, so no worries!

And you aren't the only one who liked the swordswoman for him. :)

Tanya | 54 comments I think it is just them. I don't think the spell is responsible for their behaviour. He is a good looking guy, who they think is a noble. I don't blame them for their attraction, he sounds like an attractive guy. But looks shouldn't be the reason to want to marry some one. (And when Frisha and Tam first talked about Rez and marriage that was all Frisha knew about Rez when she said she would marry him.) Frisha doesn't really know anything about him. She was practically the last to know that he was the man behind the mask. I found it entertaining to read, but I was king of hoping that Rez and Frisha would only stay friends.

I think I would like for Rez to meet a women who isn't obsessed with him, and for him to have to work for her affection. She doesn't have to be a warrior, but to at least be able to look after herself. That's just me though :)

Ivar | 38 comments I never really understood the dislike of Frisha. I mean she's acting like a normal girl her age would and she does show signs of maturing. I don't think she likes him only for his looks, but rather because she sees him as a noble knight errant without pretension. The lack of pretension and complete self assurance in a person is extremely attractive. Her jealousy is likely due to her having the self-esteem of a teenager. She wonders why Rez even sticks around with her when she's not as pretty/tough/sophisticated/rich as all the other women around him. She has no idea why he likes her. It expresses itself as jealousy, and I admit that's an immature reaction, but it's her trying to cling to what she can. However, as I said, she's shown signs of learning that she can do that by trying to advance herself and stand on her own.

What makes her and Tam different from everyone else is that they are attached to Rez entirely without an agenda. They aren't looking for a better place in life through him, or using him for political protection, or attaching themselves to his star or using him for political gain. They stayed with him out of a genuine desire to get to know him. I believe Rez also understands this. They're the first people who tried to see "him." We may laugh at Rez's "Not going to stab me in the back" criteria, but it's actually pretty important. I'm pretty sure Frisha has no outside loyalties besides that to him. It's for that reason he's reluctant to bring her into that world because then she'd become just another tool. It's also why he was genuinely hurt when Tam was avoiding him. I bet it would hurt just as much, if not more if Frisha did the same.

Ivar-- good point about Frisha and Tam's lack of agenda. Sure, it turned out that they really needed his help on their trip--BUT, they didn't seek it out and beg him to help them because they saw he would be useful. They gradually learned to trust him, even though it was in a fairly innocent way, since they didn't know much about the bad guys in the world and definitely didn't know about Rez's training and guild activities.

And even with bumps in the road, they have had their eyes opened to all kinds of darker aspects in Rez and in life... and are still friends with him. And with no agenda, still. (Yeah, Frisha wants Rez, but it's not in any underhanded, evil way, and tons of women--and men--want Rez, so no big deal.)

I actually think the "not stabbing in the back" thing is funny--but also very telling. Rez pretty much doesn't trust ANYONE to NOT stab him! His experience has told him that this caution is important if he wants to not get stabbed a lot. Frisha, though, he has come to trust not to hurt or betray him in that way. There are plenty of harmless things in the world that Rez isn't interested in, but there's something in Frisha that he recognizes as safe and trustworthy. And his instincts are pretty well-honed, even if he's inexperienced in human relations... So I think he sees something important in Frisha.

@Ivar -- I loved all the questions you had at the Q&A. I hope you'll start some cool discussions up here in this Group, if you think of any you might want to hear us all chat about. :)

This is such a great discussion. I'm glad people are interested and really thinking about the characters. I feel that Frisha has a lot of depth, as you guys have shown, but some people are quick to judge.

Many readers are used to modern YA fantasy books where teenagers are far too mature and knowledgeable for their ages. This leaves little room for personal growth and character development. (When I find myself reading one of those books, I tend to add about 10 years to the stated ages, and I am much more comfortable.) While there may not be much difference in mentality and maturity between people who are 30 and 35, there is a significant difference between 18 and 24. Many people forget what it was like to be those ages (or they haven't reached them yet), but I teach college students. I know. I wanted these characters to feel more realistic while presenting multiple threads of dichotomy (e.g. commoner vs. noble, controlled emotion vs. emotionally controlled, experienced vs. inexperienced, etc.).

You guys have made excellent points regarding the relationships between Rezkin, Frisha and Tam, and I don't feel that I need to repeat them. Based on the comments that I receive, Tam seems to be the most overlooked of the main characters, so I am glad to see some discussion of him.

Tanya | 54 comments Kel wrote: "This is such a great discussion. I'm glad people are interested and really thinking about the characters. I feel that Frisha has a lot of depth, as you guys have shown, but some people are quick to..."

I had a discussion recently with my nephew about why I dislike Frisha so much. He told me the reason she gets under my skin so much is because I am passionate about strong female characters. That doesn't mean they have to be kick ass fighters but confident, and secure. I also have a low tolerance of jealous/obsessive behaviour. But that is my problem, and in saying that I still love the books. I will try to have a more open mind about her, the next time I read the books.

On the subject of Tam, I think he is great. I think he is slowly finding him self on his Journey with Frisha, and Rez. And discovering that life outside of his hometown is a lot different than he thought it would be. Tierian (Ok I spelt that wrong) Is another character development that I have enjoyed watching. I think so far out of all the characters he is one that has changed the most over their journey.

I think this requires a wait and see approach like Kel said. I do like actual growth in my teen characters. Often I find that the character that rubs people the wrong way the most from the start is the one who has the most character development.

And thanks for the compliment ^_^ I just ask whatever my brain comes up with.

Lorraine (Raine11) | 40 comments Tanya wrote: "Kel wrote: "This is such a great discussion. I'm glad people are interested and really thinking about the characters. I feel that Frisha has a lot of depth, as you guys have shown, but some people ..."

This is just commentary regarding the jealousy aspects of Frisha. I have a lot of patience when it comes to jealousy in that it doesn't cause a mix of some of the more typical responses to it for me. Most people have the response of irritation, impatience, anger or even disgust to seeing this emotion in characters, especially young characters. My response in reading this sort of thing is almost painful empathy, like seeing someone being whipped because it is often like that mentally.
I am an shy, introverted hermit with agoraphobic tendencies so lets just say I am a grade A candidate for feeling jealousy in that it is really easy to feel insecure and unconfident in most situations. It is normal to feel envious in what seems to be a strong, confident person or not feeling up to par when surrounded by other people. As stated, it takes some strength to even post in discussions like this. When I was younger...yeah, it was a lot worse so I see the authors point regarding this. This helps see the characters as they truly are meant to be seen.
The funny thing is, my family has often commented on how strong and confident I am when I feel anything but so persception is key in this and something I try to see in all characters I love reading about. My mother asked me once "what is it to be brave?" my response (besides being the flip side of the coin equaling stupid :) was when you do what needs to be done even if it scares you. The same logic applies to jealousy sometimes. You cannot flip it off like a switch, you feel it, recognize where it comes from (usually it is what you see as your own imagined inadequacies) and try to see yourself to the other side. Like anything, that only comes with experience in feeling it and working with it. Frisha has had zero experience with the feelings she is dealing with Rezkin, this is her first so not surprising there is jealousy here and her navigation hasn't been perfect. This adds to her depth. She isn't perfect. Is she strong? Well, does feeling jealousy make you weak? Only if it stops you and if it is the only thing you feel. I haven't seen it stop her yet but we haven't seen her truly work her way through, just hit the brakes from time to time. I want more of her common sense to come through though. That was beautifully shown in when Tam found out more about Rezkin.
I have really loved some of the responses that Rezkin has done with dealing with the jealousy in Frisha. The best part is it feels to me to be instinctual. He has not had the typical responses, anger, disgust, etc. (those are some of the worst responses you can give to deal with this in my opinion btw as it causes the spiral down to continue) In some cases, he has shown some patience due to his attempt to really understand what is going on. That was PERFECT and in my opinion, will help in character development later. K, done with my two cents. Feel free to throw them back :)

Well I appreciate your point as well :) I liked the swords women Yserria from the start and hope we see more of her. She indicated common sense from the start and that is always well appreciated in my opinion. The discussion about marriage with the nobles had me laughing uproariously. It was fun to picture her expression! I also loved picturing Frisha in that moment as well, almost a sympathetic, "I know, right?"

I actually saw some similarities in how Palis reacted to Yserria in how Frisha had with Rez initially and had hopes for them before Palis died. Palis made a leap of faith for Yserria in his feelings for her that he backed up in his sacrifice for her. He was a true person character wise. I think she truly appreciated the loss of that when he died.

Frisha is making in her own way that same leap of faith for Rez. A truly brave thing to do though she may not truly appreciate that until later. Some could call it naive or just blind belief. Isn't all love that way in the beginning? The young are more ready to leap and believe and are too often hurt by this as the lack of experience in choosing makes things more of a blind choice. Growing pains are a B.

I believe the author has played this very well so far in the setup of the characters development. Reign of madness ended with a cold splash of reality in the younger characters faces this way so I am REALLY excited to see how they develop in book 3!

All this is very different in some ways for Rez as he comes from almost an opposite yet similar angle. It is truly facinating to me and I really hope that it ends up that they all playing off of each other, both in weaknesses and strengths.

Ooooh, I just want to squee a bit when authors pop into discussions! It's so great to have that kind of interaction!

--But I won't, because I'm too old for squeeing (at least, too old not to make it way too embarrassing!).

I must admit that even though I have a defense for Frisha... early on she really was one of the characters I least liked... Whatsername, the healer/rebel girl (remember, I last was listening to audiobooks, so spelling is weak right now), is about the only character I liked less! (Wow, talk about flawed!)

But I was thinking better of Frisha as all the jealousy scenes accumulated and I figured the girls (most of them had my contempt for their tongues hanging out over Rez, and their willingness to tear each other's hair out!), MIGHT have some excuse in that some sort of spell might be at work.

If there was no spell... then... ugh! I just hope they get over it, because I will kind of hate them.

I would prefer at least a balance of strong female characters in books I read. I'm a bit weird and like male main characters, so I tend to try and bear with portrayals of females... just hoping that they aren't awful (that would be a deal-breaker, even with a good male MC). But so-so portrayals, I can live with.

As the male characters seem to be interesting and varied in these books so far, I'm thinking there has got to be something going on with the female characters--and Yserria seems to be cool and not showing the typical jealousy, so I'm going to bet on a spell of some kind--AND that the author can write decent female characters!

Personally, I can't relate to jealousy at all. Even though I'm on the more inhibited side (less so now that I'm older and really, really don't care so much about how people view me!), I've never felt even a tinge of jealousy over anything. --So I can't relate to characters who are driven by it. I do understand that people have emotions like that (I watch lots of true crime and people kill each other over it all the time!), but I don't relate and I don't much like seeing it (it makes people foolish and is such a waste of energy--as if fighting in a river will actually get Rez's attention in a GOOD way, or effectively stop another person from feeling jealousy?). So, I'm really hoping it's the result of a spell!!!

I DO think Frisha has a lot of potential, though. And she hasn't shown any big negatives aside from the silly snits and cat-fights. Even with no spell affecting her... she young and is trying! I have to give her credit for that.

And... I DO think Frisha is good for Rez. Simple and sweet and loyal and courageous... Rez trusts her instinctively. That's good enough for me.

I'm really interested in seeing how things go in Book 3. Things look to be really gearing up for lots of conflicts and danger. It'll be interesting to see how Frisha responds to it all. It's no longer a fairy tale where she's fallen for a handsome noble guy. Like Tam, the fairy tale is getting real, and reality is a lot nastier than they'd like...

April --- I am sticking my tongue out at you for the 'never having felt jealousy' comment. I am now morally obligated to run you over with my car. I am mostly kidding ;)

I am also really too old to squee over an author adding to a discussion, but since I am out on this bravery limb anyway....SQUEE!!!

Tanya | 54 comments I have felt jealousy, envious. They are normal emotions to experience. I think it is how we react to those emotions that matter. I have also been on the receiving end of the possessive, jealousy with an ex, and I think that is why I dislike it so much. I know Frisha was not suppose to come across that way, but some reason that was how I was seeing her. So I do plan on re-reading the books with the intention of looking at her a different way.

Rayland or something like that (Probably spelt wrong) Is the other girl you are talking about, I agree she was another character that annoyed me. Not so much of the way she was with Rez, but because she kept having to say. "I'm a warrior." But she too has shown that she is loyal. I started liking her a little more towards the end of the second book.

What I am looking forward to reading, is when Tam, Frisha, Rayland, the Sargent (Can't remember his name) and all his nobles friends find out that he is actually the Raven. How do you think they will all react?

April | 192 comments Mod
Tanya-- Great question! I think most of them will really have a hard time accepting that Rez is the Raven. BUT if things are really bad and an underground organization is needed in the kingdom... they will probably come around to understanding the practicalities. It's also not like Caydean is acting less murderously, after all.

Raelan? (guessing at spelling), is more annoying than Frisha. She's jealous/envious with no cause since Rez is totally disinterested in her and has said Frisha is his girlfriend. But maybe it's that supposed spell? However--Raelan had totally crazy issues with her "I'm a warrior/No Healing" thing. She does have good qualities, though. She's also courageous and loyal.

Heh-heh. I'm not terribly normal, I think! I see no point in feeling jealous of anyone. There are all kinds of things I'd like to change in myself, and I think having things that others have would be nice--but I don't hold that against the other person--or wish to take thiings away from them. I just figure, "good for them!" If I were Frisha or Raelin, (with no spell possibly working), I'd be sad and upset (angry, annoyed) at the other person's behavior, but I wouldn't be jealous. Maybe I'm a bit more fatalistic... like, if I were meant to have something or someone, I would. Or maybe practical... if there's something I could have I would have to work for it, but if it didn't work out for me, that's just life. ..

(and geesh... the distinctions of jealousy and envy are getting all mixed up with me!)

Tanya | 54 comments I agree, they may be shocked when they find out he is the Raven, maybe even a little scared of him. But most of his friends I think will see the value in him become the Raven. I think the Striker, I can't remember his name will be happy when he finds out.

April | 192 comments Mod
Heh. Yeah, that Striker! What a crazy guy... first follower of Rez as king, but definitely not a guy who follows orders. Yeah--he'd probably LOVE that Rez is the Raven. --Although it would totally freak out any Striker who had helped train Rez--what was that Striker's name? He doesn't trust Rez not to be the heartless assassin for the king...

Tanya | 54 comments O'donnal? Sullivan? I can't remember, I am terrible at remembering names lol. but I know who you are taking about. The one he was looking for. I wish they had talked longer so we could know more about what he knew.

I was really excited when he found him. I was like yay, now we will get some answers lol.

April | 192 comments Mod
Yeah... that missing striker really wasn't helpful at all in answering much of anything!!! :(

Lorraine (Raine11) | 40 comments Ok, my OCD is driving me nuts. (There is obviously a reason why I am a hermit, so please forgive me and see this with the humor that it is meant)

Tam or Tamarin Blackwater - Awesome best friend and a favorite of mine.

Reaylin - Rebel Healer - yup she is a tad annoying but like Frisha, she is definitely being set up to show some more depth later. Emphasis on young girl with what I have often thought of as a 'short complex'

Wesson - Battle mage and Journeyman - really like him. I want him to achieve true friend status. You immediately get the impression he is older than the rest and he acts it. Very sensible and very capable. I kinda see him as a male version of Hermione Granger without the hair.

Kai - First Striker to swear allegiance to Rez. Remember, he doesn't really believe some of the things that Rez has told him of his capabilities. He sees Rez as very capable, but doesn't fear him. YET.

Captain Jimson - He pays attention doesn't he? Given the 'friend' classification early in book one. Has a crush on Reaylin. Hmmm does she really not notice? You have to wonder. I think she underestimates him though and is just tunnel visioned on Rezkin. I think most people do underestimate Jimson. Part of the reason is the authors use of a title for him I think. We think soldier and that's it. Pay more attention to him folks...think he is going to be important later.

Farson- Only striker left alive who actually knows most if not all of what Rezkin is capable of. Or does he? He is also a master of multiple arts...I think the ranking was 4 or 5? Also, you guys were not paying attention to whom he was with when Rezkin finally found him on the roof top. Interesting companion. Why was he there? Why was she there? Lots of new questions which makes it more interesting. Why was she giving Farson info? So many questions! And why would he trust Rez? The person who was mercilessly taught to follow all orders, no exceptions and one of the last orders given was to KILL him? I sure as hell wouldn't! I would have been disappointed if he had.

Sheila Jebai - Cousin of Frisha, sister to Palis and Malcius and the most annoying, spoiled snob in the bunch. Sorry, but in my opinion she is one of the worst females introduced so far. Will she redeem herself? We will see. Every indication is she doesn't and hasn't cared who she hurts as long as she gets what she wants. She did care about Palis though.

Lord Brandt - friend of the Jebais and really smart but tries to hide it. He is being set up for something more I think. Hard to tell with that one.

K. I could keep going but I have been annoying enough :). What can I say. I don't get out much.

Great list! Loved some of your observations. One in particular...since I didn't come up with any good theories related to Farson and his connection with the mage. Thought maybe I missed something :)

I love to analyze. I also wasn't kidding that I could keep going :). I am like this with all the stories I like. Layers are such fun!

Back to the question that Tanya posed. The Raven and what would or will happen when they find out its Rez. I almost don't want anyone to find out besides the inner group of friends. Will that be hard to for them to accept? The author has utilized a method that I like in that the responses from people haven't been too perfect in certain situations. Like when Tam found out about some of Rezkin and a bit of his past. His struggle with that gave a sense of realism. It also gave him room to grow. I hope that when Tam finds out about the Raven, there is still a little struggle but not as profound i.e. He asks for an explanation, tries to understand, etc. That would show he is growing. He wouldn't be jumping from one emotion to another. A true friend doesn't just always agree though. He would just be delegated to a yes man then. I want Tam to achieve a level of steadiness that will be truly impressive.

Frisha? I think that is going to be a hard one for her. Really difficult. The Raven is different than a soldier and or warrior. The underworld is a dark place and I think Frisha has a kind soul. Certain harshnesses, like Rez dealing with the first thieves guild and how the new head earned her status...hard for the kind to take but lets see if Rez gives her that chance.

If the strikers find out? Hmmm. I think they will do what training dictates. I think Rez has different surprises for them that will be harder for them to take.

I love the way you listed all the characters, I am almost tempted to print it off so I can use it as a guide lol

Lorraine (Raine11) | 40 comments :). Well, there were a few I missed.

There were a lot of people that were introduced mid to near end of book two that I am interested in if we are going to see more of. There are also people from book one which did not make an appearance in book two that I am wondering about.

Tanya | 54 comments One of the character interactions that I enjoyed. Was when Rez took over the second thief guild, and the guy was attracted to Rez. I loved that scene. Rez of course had no idea the guy was interested in him. I hope he makes a reappearance in the series.

Lorraine (Raine11) | 40 comments Ok, that one I had to look up the right spelling for :). Adsden, who is now the new guildsmaster of the Serpents. He is also the one that is going to personally train Benni per Rezkin. Yeah, that was interesting. I think April has some reason to wonder about a spell regarding Rezkins attractiveness. Maybe. Then again, he is so self possessed and confident, that in itself is extremely attractive. I think it comes down to instinct for most people.

There is also Attica, who is the female head of the Diamond Claws. The thiefs guilds or the Assassins guild didn't make too much of an appearance in the second book. It also makes you wonder about the other guilds that may exist. The world building here is interesting.

I also wonder about the kids that Rezkin took to the assassins guild. That was interesting. They were the few of the little men that Rezkin noticed.

Lorraine -- Thanks so much for the partial character list! I've been meaning to go back to the books and actually get the names down correctly (audio books really are useless for written discussions, I've found)... but have been too lazy! I really appreciate your list and your analysis of the characters.

------------------------------------------------------------------

What was the name of the female guildsmember that the Raven ordered to find him as Rezkin at the tournament? That's another very annoying female--but I also had to blame Rez for a plan that backfired!

And, yes, Sheila was another annoying female character! I actually expected her to do some sort of horrible thing before the end of book 2... (as if she isn't bad enough already!)... I think there will be more room for her to either go very bad or maybe (but I don't hold out much hope), become a better person.

Adsden (EDIT: I meant Attica! ooops!) was a cool female character, though. I love that Rezkin saw something in her, when she's not a traditional choice for a guild-leader.

Farson! I should have remembered that one because the spelling was pretty straightforward. I know Farson shouldn't trust Rezkin at all... BUT... he also had some idea of the training and also was THERE, so he knew Rezkin didn't have a choice in fighting for his life at the end. Farson was the one smart striker who assessed his chances with Rezkin and ran! So I thought he'd have some insight into Rez and the whole training situation... But I suppose there wasn't enough time for Rez to get Farson to trust that he really wasn't interested in being a robotic seeker of his death just because of orders... (true--Rez might have been that way at first, but he'd had plenty of time to reconsider, as did Farson).

Also--Rez had some feelings for his trainers... and some actually seemed to have feelings for him, too... And Rez wasn't going around mindlessly killing strikers all that time. So I had hoped that Farson might have at least hoped that Rez wasn't all nasty and evil... I'm sure Farson will reappear, though. I guess we'll see how that goes when it happens. I'm hoping he'll come around to joining up with Rezkin.

I like the nobles that have been introduced. And yes, Brandt seems like he's got things planned for them. All of them, actually, seem to be growing and set up for interesting roles. Palis would have been showing all kinds of great storyline ahead, too, but sadly... ! That really hurt for that reason! I do hope his death doesn't mess up Malcius, since he was looking to be an interesting character, too.

I love all this character discussion!!! There is a great cast of characters to talk about, so it's cool that we're getting to some of that.

Do you think we should just discuss ALL characters here? Or should they have their own discussions? If anyone wants to start new discussions up, PLEASE do so!

I think it is just because he is an attractive man, who is confident. I may have thought it were a spell had Adsden been a straight man to start with.

I loved those little kids, and how brave were they walking through the gauntlet. As scared as they were they did as Rez had instructed. Maybe they will train, and grow up to be Strikers for Rez?

April I think here is fine for all characters. I know I have nothing new to add to the Frisha discussion until I re-read all the books again, and try to see her from another perspective.

I agree that there are some great characters to talk about. I just had to scroll up to Lorraine's character list so I could find Wesson name lol.

I think Wesson is another great character, I love when he is trying to figure out the spell on Rez, but the spell keeps making him forget. It is such a clever spell. I think he will be a good friend to Rez, he hasn't really reacted bad to anything Rez has done so far. He is very understanding, and helpful. I really hope he doesn't die in future books.

Brian Johnson | 1 comments I've only listened to the audio book and perhaps it's because Nick Podehl does such a fantastic job with his voice acting but to me Frischa is utterly annoying. Every time her jealousy surfaces it only spotlights her insecurity and how much she questions Rezkin's honor and character.

For someone as practical as Rezkin eventually it will cease to make sense for him to stay with Frischa without major growth. And since we've gone through two books with very little growth I think it fits more naturally for Rez to figure out a way to move on from her.

I think the moments during and after the fight on the beach has opened a natural segue to a stronger relationship between Rezkin and his ward.

Lorraine (Raine11) | 40 comments Ok then....to continue (and yes some of them I cheated and went back to find out the correct spelling...I have a great memory for stories but not THAT great)

:) yup, your encouragement caused this folks! You were warned that I could keep going on this front...I wasn't kidding (evil geek grin accompanied by a cackle that seriously cracks up my book nerdy family)

Ahem...

Master Jaiardun - mean main master who trained Rez in the beginning and a bit of a sadist in my opinion

Master Pieder - More decent of the main masters who trained Rez and who was also a healer...oh I have SOOO many questions!

Striker Adona - He is the only other striker in the beginning that you hear of besides Farson. He is also the one that when he was dying made the comment of "Long live the King...may he forever dwell in the darkness he has unleashed"

King Bordran - wow, what a mysterious character. Possibly Rezkins father? Definitely a relation. So many ways to speculate here but they would be pointless at this time.

Attica - New head of the Diamond Claws appointed by Rezkin. I am thinking she is both a soft and hard women. She isn't above using her wiles to get what she wants, but it may not be her real preference. It is just what she knows. She is also smart. She didn't even attempt such with Rezkin so she sized that situation up in a hurry.

Rom - Senior tough guy of the Diamond claws and has a good heart...buried deep. Soft spot for the young and champions them. His name makes me think a bit gypsy when I picture him in my head.

Broken, Cracker and Ash - The three kid thieves. Cracker I assume stays with the Diamond Claws but Broken and Ash move on to the Assassins guild. Will we see them again? Dunno, but it would be interesting to find out.

Adsden - New master of the Serpents, a self taught mage and most likely Gay or Bi. He almost had a moth to the flame quality when it came to his attraction to Rez didn't he? Did Rez truly not notice? I actually think he did but immediately dismissed it as unimportant, or filed it away for use later. Perhaps. It would go in keeping with Rezkins training I think. The author had hinted at the type of training Rezkin went through when it came to physical attraction. Do you really think they would have only focused on the possibility of Rezkin being interested in women?

Benni - was caught young and forced to become a diamond claw but is now a part of the Serpents to be trained by Adsden. Classification, sneak. I hope he shows up in the future to add a layer of "We are now back in the lives of the underworld, what has happened with the Diamond Claws? The Serpents? The Ghouls?"

Ruald Addercroft - new Marquis Addercroft since his father is dead for being a Pedafile and a sorry excuse for a human being. I was wondering what happened to him as he didn't show at the tournament in book two.

Marquis Dewinter - Father of daughter who was raped by the prior Marquis Addercroft....:(

Lady Hilith Gaderand - heh...name play of Lilith? Prior guildmaster of the Razor Edges and the worst and I do mean the worst female introduced thus far. Zero redeeming qualitys, zip, zero, zilch. April, you stated that her presence in book two was a back fire. Was it? The nobles with Rez now know her on site. The outcome of that cannot be dismissed since she is supposedly a very beautiful women with black widow tendencies. Something tells me she wouldn't have hesitated to get her hooks into a younger and to her view, naive noble....

The Adana'Ro - foreign assassin guild which were present and participated when Rez walked the gauntlet. That was interesting wasn't it? Why were they there? Why did they participate? What is their interest in the Ashai kingdom? Ooooh can't wait to see if the author has plans here!

Ok, now on to some of my favs!

Tieran - a lot of character development happened in book two for him and he is now in my opinion, part of the inner circle. If he is a 'cousin' of Rezkin, he has been delegated to a family setting so if he dies, drops out of the story, etc I will be really sad. I loved his mage abilities! I also loved how the author set that whole world building up regarding the mages.

Malcius - cousin to Frisha. :(. Liked him and I hope he doesn't turn bitter at the loss of Palis. I cannot recall his mage abilities. I hope we see more of him but in a good way.

Lieutenant Drascon - he is another one of those that you tend to not put at the forefront of your mind. I really think it has to do with that soldier mentality. We think soldier and that's it. He sticks close to JImson, not surprising and they have some character similarities. Drascon is quiet, but like Jimson, he pays attention. You get the impression he is paying attention to everything. And Rezkin notices him doing this. The quiet always tend to get my over attention because I want to know what is beneath that first layer.

Sergeant Millins - what I term a home soldier. Joined the army to be worthy of his sweetheart but that ended tragically. I have a soft spot for the military so...:(

Waylen Nasque - son of Baron Nasque and I think the youngest of the main noble group in book two. I don't know why, but I got the impression that he and Palis became close friends so I wonder about him now. Need a re-read to see more layers to him.

Prince Thresson - is he really dead? Aaaaahhhhh! Can't wait!

Master Keskian - sword smith master. Wow, that was cool bit of tech! I am a bit of a geek and love sword mythologies. I REALLY hope there is more to be seen there and I hope this smithy shows up again with some new ideas! AWESOME

Brendan Lidou - prior champion of tournament and joined the group during the escape at the end of book two. I wanna know more about him.

Aspion - first commoner that Rezkin sponsored in the tournament, and I think joined the group at the end of book two. He along with Yserria and Darius, didn't make it to the second round in the tournament.

Darius - second commoner that Rezkin sponsored and I think joined the group in the escape.

Holton of Skutton - ooh I liked him. He was the one that everyone mostly sneared at when Rez sponsored him in the tournament as he had no family name. He was also the only one who made it to round 2! I hope we see him again! He also must've known Parker Farmer of Skutton, the farmhand who died in the tournament...:(

Healer Jespia - The female healer who gave Rez a bit of a hard time at the tournament. I would have to go back and re-read to be sure but I think she stayed when everyone escaped...cannot be sure. Hey, I am saving my re-read for when the next book comes out!

Hespion - bad cheating noble who fought Tieran in the tournament and tried to poison him then Malcius I think. I think he also escaped...will we see this twit again?

Chiefton Gurell Yuold - ....LOL. Liked him of course! I pictured him as a sort of scottish viking giant of a man. He and his people joined the group at the end of book two. Looking forward to hearing more!

Striker Shezar and Striker Roarke - the only two strikers who joined Rez at the end of book two. I don't think there were more but can't remember. I wonder if the Strikers are going to be shifted around. As in, who gets the most focus? Everyone likes Kai I think because he is the first and challenges Rez regularly, but the diversity in the strikers would be fun to read about.

.....ok, think I got most everyone that I paid extra attention to...oh wait!

General Marcum - escaped the arrest warrant with hopefully his wife. If we don't see him again I will be shocked.

Lady Adelina - wife of General Marcum. Liked her. Clever, clever lady. I hope we see her again too.

Ok, now I am done...for now.

Hi Brian, thanks for the comment! I could back into my opinion regarding jealousy and such but I will spare everyone this. One thing I do want to comment on, is I do think the narration of Frisha colors it some. I like Nick Podehl but his narration of the female characters color them some in a negative light. He puts a kind of whine in their voices. The only time I saw that this wasn't present was when Lady Adelina spoke (aunt of Frisha and a cool lady I think) and when Frisha talks to Tam after Tam finds out more about Rezkins past.
I listened to the books first, then read them. I actually do that alot as I have discovered that you see different layers via each method so it is like re-discovering a story again. Takes some practice though as you get a certain mind set and naturally don't want to change it.
Anywho, as stated, I like Yserria but she has only been present for a fraction of the story. We have not seen any of her real flaws yet. I still wouldn't pick her for Rezkin in any case, even if Frisha was out, because she is now a ward of Rezkin and not on any kind of equal footing with him, not really.
It does pose a question for me anyway if we are going to see any romantic involvement of the other characters in the main group? First preference for me to be TAM PLEASE! Does our favorite country boy get to find someone...pretty please author?

Lorraine-- Thank you SOOOOO much for the expanded list of characters. Wow... There really are a lot of them! And many that I really like, and a few that I really hate.

I like Wesson a lot. He's like that distracted nerd, always trying to figure things out--spells, in his case, because that's his interest. Chaos can be happening around him, but he's just totally focused! --and that he's this beautiful guy who totally is unaware, and just so nerdy (wishing he were a Life mage instead of doing nasty destructive stuff!)... He's such a fun character!

He's kind of a mirror to Reaylin, who doesn't want to do what she's talented at, magic-wise... but he has obvious reasons (doesn't like the destructive aspects--but hasn't really thought about how he can use his abilities in a way that isn't JUST destructive, as Rez keeps trying to point out to him), and he's coming around to dealing with it, I think. Reaylin is still just annoying--but I like that she's at least trying to listen to Rez, now that she's bound herself to him.

Brian-- Rez can gather useful people to him any time he wants. I don't think being useful is Frisha's role. She's the friend, now girlfriend. She isn't there to be useful. --And really, just how romantic a notion is picking your girlfriend for their usefulness???? Do not ever try to write a Romance! ;) --Just kidding... about writing the romance, anyway! --But Rez's road to humanity is NOT served by being practical in choosing his friends. It's to be loyal to them regardless of how useful they are.

Rez had the swordswoman following him already. He doesn't need to have a romantic relationship with her. And as this isn't a romance book, he doesn't even need to have one with Frisha--but it's there because he needs that kind of tie in order to NOT be the heartless creature of darkness that he could be (and that some of the strikers thought he'd be).

But I could be totally off the mark and Rez will run off with someone else... (although I think I'd like him a lot less if he did!).

I have the same impression of Frisha. I read, and than listened to the audiobook and my opinion of her didn't change. But after talking to so many people who liked her character I thought the dislike was just me. I am planning on reading the books again, to see if I can see her differently.

I have listened to a few books now that Nick Podel has read, and think he is an amazing reader. One of my favourites.

April. Thanks! I hope everyone likes it. I should state that I haven't re-read or re-listened to the books since book two came out on audio which was a couple of months ago, therefore accuracy may be an issue. I am sure on the spelling though because as I said, I cheated and checked :)

I like Wesson alot too. Like I said originally, he reminds me of a male version of Hermione Granger. The real reason why is because in writing terms, he is so darn useful! He introduces new concepts and is the introduction of some of the knowledge of the mage world. The nobles did this too as they all have mage capabilities I think, but they are secondary. Wesson is a bit of an encyclopedia of magic! It takes a bit of the pressure off Rezkin and also backs up that Rezkin doesn't know everything! But he does know things are that have been obscured which then challenges Wesson. I think Wesson was critical in that he brought in an aspect that allowed Rezkin to grow and be challenged.

Another thing that I really liked about Wesson was he brought in a bit of magic tech. That MASK...oh that was cool!!! I loved picturing that in my head. I will miss it a bit in that I don't think Rezkin will need it as much since he revealed himself. Do you think the author will introduce more magical items? I love mythological/magic/unusual items! I could geek out about them all darn day lol.

That was why I was very engaged when that blacksmith was introduced and was seriously happy at the slight implication that Rezkin might find him again in the future.

As you mentioned, one of things that I found particularly interesting was the...Juxtaposition? Not sure if this is the right term, of the characters internally. Wesson wanting to be a life mage but IS a battle mage. Reaylin wanting to be a warrior but is a healer. Tieran wanting to be a battle mage or something similiar and not a earth mage (forgive me if I am inaccurate in that title for him, can't remember if it was Earth or another classification)

(I am actually really happy when I forget things like that. When I remember everything, I don't get to enjoy a re-read or listen)

I think this adds depth to the characters and shows an inner struggle. Maybe that is why I have such patience with it, dunno. I also like how this allows Rezkin to be a sort of guide. They are playing off each other! They are teaching Rezkin and helping shore up his weakneses and vice versa! :). As you say April, a mirror :)

I agree that this isn't a Romance...but come on! It is so much more interesting when that is added! I prefer books with romance in them...as long as it doesn't turn into a soap opera...UGH. No thanks. Cheating is a deal breaker, no exceptions.

Tanya. I completely agree that Nick Podehl is an awesome narrator. He has great flow and knows how to read a story! I just had that thought while listening to it, that wow, the females sound more whiny in listening to them than when I read them so thought maybe that might be a reason? You came at it these stories differently though so maybe it is just me. I will say that I usually immerse in a story via both methods as I like to see a story both way or three ways if there is a movie :) but I usually come to a first preference. I am leaning toward the audio version here but will still read the books. I will just listen to them first ;)

He does have great flow. I started searching books based on him being the reader because I enjoyed listening to him so much. I love that with each book I have listened to him read, he has a different voice for each character. Moon Quartet series by David Hair he had so many characters voices to do, and he had a different voice for each of them. I was amazed.

I prefer listening to audio. But will read the book first because I Can't wait for the audio book. Which usually gets published at a later date.

Oh I don't know. I have an irrational hope that the audio version won't take that long. The books got great reviews on audible so maybe they might make it a priority? Irrational as I said.

I listed out some of my questions regarding certain characters, what are some of the questions you guys came up with?

I hope so too. I would love to have the audio book first :)

One of my questions would be, What is Rez power? I think he may have some destructive power. But I am thinking that maybe, just maybe the spell on Rez is of his own making.

What are all the magic powers names, I would love a complete list. I don't think we have heard all that there is.

Where is Prince Thresson? (Had to scroll up to read your list for his mane :p) Is he really dead, what happened to him. I was half expecting him to be in the cave with all those people.

I know it has probably been explained already in the book but I have missed it, or forgotten it. Where is the Queen (King Boardons wife) Did she die, or is she still alive?

Do you remember when Rez took broken, and Ash to the assassin guild, there was a women there from another guild. Will we see more of her in upcoming books, will Rez try to take over their guild?

I love Tieran I think he has become a great noble. He started off as a not so nice guy, but improved so much over their trip. No question for him, I just wanted to mention how much I like his character lol

Will we ever find out what bad thing Wessen had done to kill someone. (Remember he talked to Tam when they thought he was upset about killing someone.) I think what ever it is, it's what made him hate his power so much.

What do you think will happen next? Who will leave Rez, and who will stay? What will be he next move?

Ok I could go on forever but I will stop there ;)

I'm pretty sure we'll hear a lot more from Wesson. Rez having his own battlemage is just going to be so important--and I'd forgotten about the mask! He's seemed, not only a useful source of info, but also like James Bond's Q--making that mask (with sound enhancements) that also allowed Rez to breathe underwater! That last bit was cool. You don't often see how magic could be more advanced tech in typical fantasy medieval-europe alt. realities.

I have the feeling that Wesson will be one of the most amazing Battlemages in history! He's geeky and smart and thinks outside the box... and Rezkin does, too, so between them, they will just kick so much a**!!!

And I also will look forward to hearing more about the magic system. It seems super interesting and unique.

I love Tieran, too. Redeemed characters are just the best. I love that he's the obnoxious useless spoiled noble and encountering Rez is enough to shake his confidence enough to make him stop and reconsider things (at first through threat of imminent death!-- at least he's not stupid!).

The visiting group of assassins... (I really need to read the books again!)-- I'm sure they're going to show up. What with all these groups and characters, I now see why Kel Kade is thinking of a series longer than a trilogy. It will be fun to see how everyone and everything ties in. There's certainly looking to be a lot of interesting things to explore!

Good question about Bordran's wife. I don't think her fate was mentioned, (or not that I can recall, but I have a horrible memory!).

Prince Thresson... Some renegade strikers might have spirited him away. Or he's been quietly killed. I'm hoping he's around somewhere, though.

Audiobooks-- I usually am just a reader, but lately have been into audiobooks while driving into L.A. I have to say that the Nick Podehl readings of these books really did get me wanting to listen to more!

The audiobooks are listed as bestsellers on Audio--so I would think that the one for Book 3 will be out pretty quickly. It's just logistics, really... the final MS still needs to get to Nick Podehl, and he has to have time in his schedule to read it... so that will take time... The ebook will always be out first because of that.

I like some romantic elements in my fantasy. But I think it particularly works here, when all this other stuff is going on-- Rez taking over guilds, killing tons of stikers, going through a tournament where creepy dudes poison others or kill farm-boys... There's a lot of dark stuff going on. And then there's Frisha and Tam! And they are central to Rez, if not all the rest of the goings on. It's just a brilliant touch to bring in two young, innocents. And with so much up to chance! a garbled Rule and a meeting at an Inn... ! It's just crazy-cool!

Umm.... Questions? I don't know... SO many! But I'm the kind of reader who puts trust in the author and tends to be happy to go where they lead me (if they are an author who is writing what I enjoy--and KK has done this so far).

I hope Tieran stays alive. He's blood-relation to Rez. He could rally any nobles who aren't in Caydean's pocket. He'd be great help in running the kingdom if Rez goes in that direction.

I hope Jimson becomes a General. and I hope Raelin gets her head on right and maybe hooks up with him (or he gets his head on right and finds someone better)--but I think romance is going to be tough with all the fighting and danger going on!

Questions... hmmm... Do we think Farson will come around to supporting Rezkin? And that mage he was with? I'd like to think so.

Do you think there's going to be pirate/sea adventure at all in Book 3? Will they assemble a fleet? Visit foreign lands?

IS there something going on that is bigger than just Caydean being a mad king??? Is there a greater threat from outside? Or is Caydean the threat to other countries as well as his own? What's he assembling the army for??? How much does Caydean know about Rezkin? (and am I spelling Caydean right?).

---
Oh, and great question: What is Rez's power? --it's something that boggles Wesson's mind! Can break through wards... I have no clue. Not enough info on types of magic, I think... plus, I suspect it's something rare and powerful!

----
At the TOP of this big discussion...
I've compiled Lorraine's lists of characters and sorted them into categories... If anyone has a better way to sort them, tell me. I'll keep adding to it as we go along (and if I will ever get back to the books to re-read them!!!).

The list is great, I keep scrolling up to check the characters name, or just to make sure I am spelling it right

I KNOW--I was having to read through all the posts to check the names and spellings... I thought I might as well put a compiled list at the top... :)

Ivar | 38 comments Wow! I definitely missed a lot! I love how you all broke down the characters like this! It really reminds me of how diverse yet unique the cast is. All this love for audiobooks while I sit here much too impatient for them. (I read very quickly so I get impatient with how long an audiobook takes) Also, the beauty of fantasy is that I can craft the world in my head, voices and all!

Hmmm, stringing back to the discussion, I have to wonder how General Marcum is going to fit into all of this. It seems the tables are turned. He thought Rez was trying to hitch himself to the General's wagon, I bet the General will come to hitch his on Rez.

One thing I find fascinating about the General is that so far, he is the only person Rez has "lost" to. I think he's the only person who Rez could not turn his way or win over. I don't think he'll like Rex anymore now that his nephew is dead either. I think it'll be a pretty pivotal character moment for Rez to see how he handles it once more in a reunion. A chance for him to "rectify a mistake." Perhaps this is what causes Rez to snap and get REALLY angry for once?

I read a lot too, and one of the reason I switched to audio was because I needed to slow myself down. I was getting to the point where I was spending more time searching for a book to read, than actually reading.

I don't know how the General will take Rez now, he may blame Rez for everything. I think the General was more worried about who Rez was, and not wanting his niece married to someone like him. I don't know if Rez being king will change his mind because he will technically be the same person, only with a crown. I think the General would have to actually get to know Rez, and than I think he would find that he actually likes him.

I think if anyone can make Rez angry it would be the General lol Rez seems to only show any angry emotion when his honour is questioned. So maybe Striker Farson will be the one to make him crack since she doesn't trust, or believe that he isn't working for someone.
