My grandfather is a very quiet man, but one day I got a story out of him.

One day his sisters were wandering in the woods up in Washington.
One at a time, and on different days.
The first time, one sister saw a giant, it must have been eight feet tall and made of wood.
A month later, the second sister went into the woods and saw a tiny figure, maybe two feet tall, also made of wood, and it had its head in its hands, crying.

He didn't know if they were real, but they are called Stick Indians.

This, unfortunately, was all I could get out of him. I really would have liked to hear more.
I also would like to hear if anyone has any similar stories.

I've been to Taholah several times and have good friends that are Quinault so I've heard several stories about these Little People. The Stick Indians are atypical of little people in that they are solitary beings who live far away from people. They were known to have a fascination for shiny objects. Whenever hunters were traveling in woods that were haunted by the Stick Indians, hunters would leave coins, mirrors, glass beads, or anything else shiny to distract these Little People.

Wow, I did not know about the shiny stuff, about them liking it.

Do you have any stories from where you are from?

I know quite a few actually. I've been lucky enough to have recorded my grandparents and many other tribal elders when I was younger. My part of Oklahoma is full of old stories and legends. A regional boogieman (or rather woman) that is prevalent in my part of Oklahoma is the Deerwoman. She steals the essence or life force of men so that she can prolong her own life. I'm also an artist have painted an image of her. You can find it on my facebook page via my website. Thanks Rosie. You are doing some wonderful things for your First Nations people with your writing and you are shedding light on a subject that needs to spoken about. I'm sure your people are very proud of you.

Thank you for the heads up. Unfortunately I don't have a facebook author page. I have a facebook "book" page instead. I probably should look into an author page though.

I am a Cowlitz Indian from Washington state. There were 2 main bands, Lower Cowlitz and Upper Cowlitz. I am from the Upper Cowlitz band - Tiadnapum(sp). We were known as the Stick People.

This is such an amazing coincidence. I will ask around and find out if anyone knows this story. Thank you for sharing.
