Missy Sheldrake (missysheldrake) | 143 comments Let's face it, creative people like us need an outlet to share our work. Some of us enjoy creating visually in addition to our writing, and what's the point if we can't share what we've done?

This topic is a place to share your artwork, whether it's drawing, fan art, finger painting, photography, book covers, or anything else visual.

If you want, you can even share someone else's photo or illustration of a place or person that reminds you of a scene in your books, or inspires you. Just make sure you credit the source.

Remember, this is SUPPORT for indie authors, so do not be critical of other people's work unless they ask for a critique. Overly harsh posts will be deleted.

Images should be no wider than 400 pixels. We don't have image hosting here, but you can simply use the image's link to add your image. Here's the code to do so:

< img src="LINK" width="400">

Just copy the code above and replace LINK with the link to your image, then make sure you remove the space between the first < and img.

What makes me laugh is that the part I thought looked the most over the top naughty (drippy outcropping on the left) isn't actually all that different from the supposedly tame source material.

message 29: by Calvin (new)

Calvin Westbrook (calwbrook88) | 149 comments It's great to see a thread that allows us to show artwork of our characters and the inspiration for our stories.

Although my writing is generally done alone, I often create characters with other people, and one of my best friends from deviantArt, AuldMisdione, helped me create the protagonists of my upcoming book A Treasured Bind. We worked out a deal that he receives a fair share of any profit that we make from the sales of the books, and partial credit for their creation if they are ever used.

Without further ado, I would like to introduce you to Caleb Grimaldi and Varron Sevarine, the two main characters of A Treasured Bind. This picture was drawn by Juacamo, another deviantArt artist who does amazing work. In this picture, Caleb has freed Varron from the bottle that held him prisoner. Instead of being forced to serve Caleb, Varron is released from his binds, and is now a free genie.

I love the concept for the characters and I really love the artwork! Is it concept art for your own reference, or will you include your art in the book?

Also, CB, I have always loved that cover, for too many reasons to list here!

It's more so I can see a visual version of the character. It helps me to imagine their stories in greater detail. I probably won't be including the art, but I might provide a hyperlink to the source.

message 35: by T.R. (new)

T.R. Briar (trbriar) | 54 comments Having a thread for people to show off their own art is a really fantastic idea; it's really great to see how people visualize their stories and characters.
I have a lot of stuff I've done over the years of my stories and characters (some of it done before I even finished the book.)

This one's a rejected cover for my first novel that in hindsight I probably should've used instead. Not that I don't like the cover I went with, but this one gets the overall atmosphere across better:

Bleeping fantastic.
And I just checked out the covers of your books and I love every single one. The font, the images themselves.. just amazing.

I was actually a visual artist way before I got into writing. Guess that art degree has to be good for something.

And I'll throw up another one; this is one of the settings from my third book. I was considering using it for the cover but the aspect ratio is all wrong.

Edit:
Alexis wrote: "Bleeping fantastic.

Thanks a lot!
The font actually stems from me not being happy with any of my default fonts, so I did some weird masking tricks/blurring/waving of a normal font. Which I have to now remember to do for every cover so I'm mildly regretting that decision.

So much gorgeousness!

I didn't know they weren't archival - I'll have to keep that in mind. Maybe I'll buy a wide tip archival marker next. Though, I do live in a nice dry climate and I keep my art flat and out of the light. I only use sharpie for really wide areas. Still, I'm really glad that I routinely photograph everything I draw and archive it digitally.

Missy Sheldrake (missysheldrake) | 143 comments Here's one I'm especially fond of from book 3 of my series. This is Quenson the Sorcerer and his blood-thrall, Celli, who as you can see is not looking too good, but is completely enamored with him. I really like how the potion bottles on the shelves came out. Also, how emaciated she looks, and how desperate for his attention, while he smiles at her like she's something to toy with. It captures these two perfectly!
