For many readers, January is a time where their world is covered in a frigid blanket of white and daylight is a scarce commodity. It can also be the setting for a truly horrific read. Our theme for January is any horror tale that has winter as it's backdrop.

The Terror by Dan Simmons. Not technically winter but the arctic is pretty brisk.

I'm currently reading it but, The Winter People The timeline is perfect for a January read, it takes place just after New Years.

I *JUST* read MISERY (I re-read it in winter a lot) SO I will not re-read it AGAIN like 3 weeks later, but I will be able to pop in on debates and such if this is the winner....

But if this is GORE and more, not 'mental/psychological thriller' then EDWARD LEE is the man!

I've not read anything by Edward Lee so I had a look at The Backwoods. I'll second Jennifer's vote. The Backwoods looks good.
