To Ride Hell’s Chasm by Janny Wurts is a nice introduction to the author's books. It's a standalone and definitely not coming of age.
The Great Book of Amber by Roger Zelazny always my one of my favorites.

I'm reading Assassin's apprentice but also want something more grown up and gritty that doesn't take forever to start up and will keep me in suspense.
heard of miles Cameron, John gwynee, David hair, and some others.
Any specific recommendations? other names or series' that are awesome and some what creative?
