I read this in middle school so its probably a young adult novel. My memories of it are somewhat vague and could be incorrect. My general sense is that its a fantasy world where singing and music are almost religiously regarded. The main character is a young girl who is very talented at singing (I think?). She is in some kind of secluded covenant-like location for songstresses or the like. A man comes along and for a reason I can't remember, they escape together. Main subject of the series--I believe it was a series, trilogy maybe--Is that there is some kind of illness/disease that only affects the singing people. I think it has something to do with magic. Anyway, it makes them mute (or unable to sing) and then it kills them. There is some kind of male antagonist that has something to do with the illness. The guy the main character escapes with eventually gets the illness, but somehow doesn't die from it. I remember there is a dramatic scene where he's trying to convince the main girl not to kiss him so she won't get sick, and there is some weird reason why she can kiss him anyway. I wish I could remember more.

Done. Leah, I moved your request to the Unsolved folder because you're looking for a specific book.

I think this could be Kate Constable's Chanters of Tremaris series. The main character leaves her secluded home for singers with a man (Darrow) in the first book and I think there is a dangerous sickness in the last book which affects their singing magic, which Darrow also contracts The Tenth Power: The Chanters of Tremaris Trilogy, Book III
