This is the story of, basically, a loser. The narrator is a depressed 30-year old with a meaningless job, no serious relationships or friendships, an unhealthy attitude about women, and a 4-pack a day smoking habit. Overall, a real downer of a book.
Too much misogyny and racism to suit me, place a highly unlikable main character. The writing is just okay. This debut of Houellebecq's is my first book by this author and I hope it improves from here. Definitely not worthy of the list.
